Ice Cream Before Thanksgiving Dinner?

ever since i can remember, every year before we eat thanksgiving meal, we have a small bowl of sorbet with a fruit cocktail mixed in. i am not sure how this started or why we do it, but my mom said her mom always did it and now so do we. i've never met anyone else who did this, and was wondering if anyone could shed some light maybe on where this came from?

i think it might have something to do with cleansing your palate before eating?

Never heard of that exactly, but we have had Cranberry Ice (or sorbet) with our Thanksgiving meal instead of cranberry sauce. Just a small dish, but it's kind of nice! Our family has done this at Thanksgiving and Christmas for 30 some years now. I'm thinking about serving it with our wedding cake the week before Christmas (it's a lemon cake) too....

The small serving of sorbet or granita is to cleanse the palate.
It is between courses and usually just a small amount. It is a nice little touch to a meal of many courses. I once did a lemon-mint-asti sorbet which was so refreshing. You guys are talking great stuff today!

.... I don't know where to put this: JerzeeTomato? therealJerzeeTomato? I'm a very confused towl.

Yep, I've had lemon or lime sorbet served for the purpose of cleansing the palate between courses.

it's always a good time for ice cream..

If it's before the meal, it's not a palate cleanser, it sounds more like an old-fashioned version of a 'salad,' which could mean fruit, gelatins, ice cream and so forth.

When I clicked on this thread I thought it was going to be about going to Carvel before the meal, or ice cream on waffles for breakfast!

I agree with HeartsofGlass, I thought this was going to be about overstuffing ourselves by eating ice cream before a giant meal, but a sorbet with fruit in it just sounds like part of the meal! Sounds good actually!

I am as always the Jerzee Tomato. If you read what I write often enough you will know it is me. Mainly because unlike any imitator I can cook and bake and I call bullshit when I see it. If you are not sure if your getting the genuine Jerzee Tomato ask a baking, cooking, ingredient or menu question. I think those who know me will know it is me.
I think someone got their giblets all in a bunch. Never accept any imitation demand the genuine Jerzee Tomato!
Happy Thanksgiving to the SE staff and Community!!!
