I survived the week!!!!! Did you?
Well my last meal for 20 of my hubby's relatives has been served, cleaned up and discussed and now I am done! I am so pleased I survived as some have truly....charming foibles. I think all was a hit even thou one person looked at 14 different bottles of soda pop and said "Is this all you have?" and I smiled and said the corner market is open 24 hrs feel free to bring whatever you like. We had no alcohol. How did your week go? How long were the guests in town, all week or one day?

I was lucky not to deal with that, I have not celebrated TG, I pat you on the back that you got through all that. Your husband should take you out to your fav restuarant, you deserve it.

Barely. Our T-Giving revolved around a major surgery but I'm happy to say that both the Surgery and the Feast went well.

I have had guests since Tues, and will till Monday morning.
We have breakfasted, lunched, brunched and dinnered for almost a week now. Last night I got tired of mashed potatoes and made a baked mac and cheese. This seemed a nice change. My FIL took my can of Illy espresso and added it to a half can of TJ's coffee to "stretch it" and I got a bit wigged. We are never short on coffee but wth. Luckily they went and bought me a new can.
All the wine we received was wild. I literally got 12 bottles this thanksgiving.
Everyone felt the urge to just bring many bottles. I thought we were in hard times ffs. I had actually picked out a bottle of Menage a Trois for this weekend and was surprised to find it was not too shabby.
We had it with brunch yesterday.

@Jerzee ~ I was also surprised when I tried the Menage a Trois. Not bad for $10.

What's not to like about a wine named Menage a Trois?? Think I'll BOLO for that one myself.
@ Jerz...

OMG, look of HORROR! You are a saint. Glad he got you another can. BF's mom opted for her "instant" coffee vs. my freshly brewed from freshly ground beans. BF's dad, OTOH, loved the hair that sprouted on his chest after he drank mine... :D

mine went great. lost a few dishes but i needed new ones anyway. paper plates are not beneath me until i buy some cute ones. the boys "nephew and bf son" brought their gf's, and i found out i'm gonna be a grandma. it was nice having the house filled with people i love and like. and it was even better when they went home.

@love2cook- EGAD! Shock and Horror. No alcohol?
Kudos on your response to a complaining guest. Haha, may not have gone that smoothly with alcohol.
We had no guests, nor were we guests, for the first time ever. I was afraid I'd be sad but it was actually really nice. My husband doesn't cook but helped me in the kitchen all day and was quite the sous chef, I must say. We used all my lovely tableware that I got in Italy and my husband lit candles and the table was beautiful. My silly boys (12 & 14) wore, too small, jackets and ties because it was a "formal" occasion. The food was delicious and the company pleasant.
@jerzee, congrats on the wine. I got a bottle of Vampire from a friend one year for halloween as a joke and it was quite good. Now we buy a case every year. I'll be on the lookout for the Menage a Trois as well if for nothing better than to present it to the hostess when invited over.
@Pav, I find it hard to believe you weren't having both.

@TEXas ~ Menage a Trois is a California wine from Folie a Deux. It is a light white table wine. I stumbled on it a few years ago at a local resto. When I ordered it, the women at the table behind me started snickering. Too funny. I saw the Vampire wine at the State Store. Bottle looked interesting. You say it is tasty?
izatryt at 3:48PM on 11/30/08
Oh and Pav ~ Never mind...........
izatryt at 3:49PM on 11/30/08
Funny you should ask.
My husband had dental surgery on Monday...seemed to be healing nicely and was able to eat quite well on Thursday...on Saturday, he went back to the oral surgeon in pain...they fixed him up and now he's on percocet and back on the mushy foods.
My niece had an allergic reaction and was rushed to the ER Wednesday night. She's four and a half. Every bit of food has been examined for peanuts, but nothing. We're suspecting her allergy might be worsening and she's become very sensitive to even the protein residue. After several hours in the ER getting iv's of antihistimines and steroids, she sat in her car seat and said to her parents, "Hey guys, thanks for taking me to the hospital." Now, my family jokes about the ER becoming a family tradition because two years ago I ended up in the ER for an allergic reaction.
My dog's tumor has grown and become ulcerative and he won't leave it alone (it's on his back and he's figured out how to contort his hind leg to scratch at it). We're booking his surgery in the next week.
All in all, we took it all in stride, but when I list it all, it does seem like alot.
We're still thankful for all that we do have.

@ izatryt..... I never do :)
Pavlov at 3:58PM on 11/30/08
Sheesh @ wookie.... at least you didn't have any real emergencies like I did when I got to the Liquor store and found out they only had one bottle of Lagavulin!
But I'm glad things worked out for you and yours wookie...
Pavlov at 4:04PM on 11/30/08
Oh wookie, it sure does seem like a lot - this sounds like a week from hell. Your niece is such a sweetheart though! Hope your husband gets well soon, and good luck with your pup's surgery. Sending hugs and lots of good wishes your way...
brooke29 at 4:10PM on 11/30/08
@wookie ~ Percocet! That is wicked stuff. There is something heart wrenching about a sick doggie! I hope everything goes well.
@Pav ~ I am beginning to get that!
izatryt at 4:14PM on 11/30/08
Thanks for all your kind words. You guys are super. And really we are all good, even hubby is feeling better. The niece is doing great, only a little scratched up from all the itching she did before the steroids and antihistamines kicked in. As for the pupper, Carter, the good news is that though the tumor has grown rapidly, is ulcerative and pretty scary looking, it is benign. Thanks again and I'll look for you all on Facebook!

I was fearing my food police relatives on TG day until hubby fired up the turkey fryer outside. (We did one big bird in the oven, stuffed, and one outside just for novelty's sake.) While waiting for it to reach temp, he popped in a julienned potato, just to see. (We're rookies at this frying thing.)
Well, in he came with these piping hot French fries. I pulled out the ketchup and sea salt and watched as my brother and his health-freak wife gazed down at them, salivating. My brother declared we should try bananas and a slew of other things and then asked his wife to get him an outdoor fryer for Christmas! I almost fainted.
So much for healthy eating. After that we had no problems with the food or menu for the remainder of the weekend.
moibec at 11:08PM on 11/30/08
@wookie I am glad she is ok that would be so scary for such a little person! Hope the hubby's mouth is feeling better. I am glad the doggie will be ok too.
@moibec I had a request to fry the turkey but I am afraid to fry something so huge. I am dead clumsy and would most likely burn my house down!
We don't celebrate Tgiving either but everyone is off work anyway why not get together! They came from as far away as indiana and some were tx and a few were st louis so here in OK we are smack in the middle for all! They are all coming back in April so I am already planning the next time. :)
love2cook at 12:12PM on 12/01/08
I just barely survived as well. I was planning on just helping my mom through her usual cooking this year but instead wound up having to do all of the Thanksgiving day cooking myself! (Long story, she had to go visit my grandma in the hospital but all is well now). I cooked my first turkey ever, prepared the green beans, sweet potatoes. Thank goodness a lot of our prep work was done beforehand! With some help from my dad and one burn on the arm from taking the turkey out of the oven, we made it through and everyone enjoyed! :)
