Has anyone ever run out of food at Thanksgiving?
As Thanksgiving hosts, at some point we all fear running out of food and leaving our guests hungry and disappointed...but has this actually ever happened to anyone? Usually it's the opposite, forcing people to take food home :-)
Today for a moment, I was thinking I would not have enough, but then I reviewed my menu again, and don't think there will be a problem, haha!

Never. Ever. But there was the time when I made 3 pumpkin pies. I worked 3-11 p.m., so we ate at 1. I'd had a small piece of pie. Late ex-husband and 10 y/o son stayed home. I got in around 12:30 a.m., ready for leftovers. Rummaged through kitchen, began assembling. Saw pie with half of it left. Took a piece. Ate. Asked spouse, "Where'd you put the other pie?"
"What other pie?" he said, trying to look innocent. The two of them had eaten more than two whole pumpkin pies in one evening!

Once. We had just moved to a new country halfway around the world from our friends and I was feeling a little sorry for myself. So I bought a little turkey--after all there were just five of us and three of those were children. Boy, were they mad at me! Turkey just isn't turkey apparently unless it weighs in at least 15lbs! So now I make sure that, no matter what, the table is still covered with food when we are finished eating and the leftovers last for a week and cover sandwiches, turkey hash and soup!

If it ever happened I would be shocked. I come from a long line of women who naturally cook for an army.
I am a firm believer in the back up pie. I always get two pumpkin, one mince, one apple and a pecan. Do we eat all of that, hardly never.
I usually send the mince home with my parents and the rest home with my in laws. Everyone leaves my house with take away.

I believe I can safetly say that no one has ever left my house hungry. Maybe the guy who fixed my gutters, but he doesn't count, 'cause I probably offered him something.
The hardest part for me was always finding containers and refrigerator space for leftovers. I love the heavy-duty baggies we can get now. In the "olden days" they had sandwich baggies that folded and were super flimsy. You sure wouldn't use them for storage.
I'm known as the one who can come up with a meal for unexpected guests out of seemingly not much in the pantry or freezer. It's fun to astonish people! Food equals love, and I try to have plenty of both.

Put me down as a "never, ever." I do remember one year having T-Giving at my aunt's house in NJ. I was working for a brokerage house and had to work the Friday after. It's one of the hardest days to work because so many of my friends are off and the subways were deserted.
I went home with my mouth all ready for Friday After T-Giving leftovers - of which my mother had the foresight to take none. I decided that day that when I host T-Giving there will be enough for EVERYONE to take leftovers home. It's not the #@^ Friday after T-Giving without that turkey-stuffing-cranberry-whatever else you traditionally have sandwich.

chiff--that made me so sad to read your story :( I am self-employed with an odd work schedule and have often had to work at least part of 'Black Friday' and it does feel very lonely.
As for running out of food--I have never attended a Thanksgiving where ANY of the food was missing that I can recall. Maybe a cake as a kid where the choice slices with certain toppings (like icing roses) were eaten by others but that's about it.

I think the Thanksgiving feast was specifically designed to have mega leftovers. There are never leftovers at my house because I refuse to bring them home! ;-D Since my daughter has such a big family, everything goes to her house. I call it my holiday dieting program! ;-D

Funny you should ask. I picked up my Heritage turkey today, and when I ordered, there were two size ranges offered. I went for the smaller, because I didn't want to end up with a humungous bird for the four of us. Well the bird I got was on the small end of the range, and when I opened the box and looked inside, I almost had a panic attack. I've seen chickens that size. I started calculating whether this was going to be sufficient or not, and starting thinking about adding extra side dishes and appetizers. I figured I'd be okay, but we probably wouldn't have much in the way of leftover turkey. Which is not good. So I came to my senses and bought a turkey breast. Which is kind of good, I'm going to cook them the same way as far as brining and spices and everything else, and then it'll be a good comparison of the heritage and the regular bird.

I've run out of a particular item (usually rolls) but I don't think I've ever been so short on so many things that someone started rummaging in my cupboards for a snack.
Everyone contributes to the meal so I'm not at all worried about running out. And typically someone will say "I'm bringing X" and will end up bringing X,Y, and Z so usually I run out of space before I run out of food!
The husband had grandmothers with totally different views on food. One made enough food (all the time, not just on holidays) to feed 10 extra people and if she ran out of something she'd make double the next time she served it. The other would make just enough. No leftovers. If you were still hungry after the meal and there wasn't anything left you could eat bread with jelly on it and you got no apologies. Yow.
