Five ingredient meals!
Anyone got any ideas for 5 ingredient meals? That's not including olive oil and s/p as any of the five, btw!
Anyone? Anyone?
Merci beaucoup!

megannesta at 1:53PM on 11/17/08
san marzano tomatoes are a must in a tomato based sauce...good stuff!!
Markbb at 2:27PM on 11/17/08
short pasta
beans
tomato puree
sage
garlic
This gives you pasta e fagioli, as eaten with joy throughout Tuscany :)
There is also 'Peposo':
beef
crushed tomatoes
garlic
(for this one you actually need to count salt and pepper as ingredients, to get five!)

Pasta, fresh tomatoes, basil, fresh mozzarella.
To change the dish, the fifth ingredient can be shrimp, chicken, shallots, scallions, olives, garlic, green peas, onion, green pepper, mushrooms, sausage or bacon.
The fresh basil could be subbed with oregano, tarragon, thyme, marjoram or parsley; or you could use a dried herb, a spice mix, or even a hot pepper. If you use a dried herb, you'd need to start it with the tomatoes rather than tossing it in at the last second with the mozzarella.
The cheese could be feta for a mediterranean flavor, or you could grate just about any other cheese on top for serving. If you use the fresh mozz, you cube it and add it just after the pasta meets the sauce. Toss it through and serve.
Or take the cheese out and use two of the optionals.
If your spice of choice had a cajun flavor, you could put this over rice instead of pasta. Or use coucous, bulghur, or anything else that sounds good.
I guess the only thing I didn't offer a substitute for was the tomatoes. That's easy. Use a pesto instead. Okay, pesto is a blend of inredients, but if you just happen to have some on hand, it feels like one ingredient. Hmmm, I suppose you could also sub mushrooms for the tomatoes, and maybe use a creamy substance instead of the cheese. Like mushrooms and sour cream....
So how many recipes is that. Can you tell that I'm hungry and I haven't decided what I want yet?
dbcurrie at 2:57PM on 11/17/08
Onion
Split peas (or frozen peas)
Curry powder (or fresh mint)
Chicken broth
=
pea soup
Or if you want a "real" meal...
Pork Tenderloin (seared and oven roasted, or butterflied and smeared with...)
Dijon mustard (and coated with black pepper, preferably crushed, then cooked over medium heat)
Green beans (steamed and tossed with some of the mustard and olive oil)
Potatoes (boiled and mashed with...)
Buttermilk.
If you're having a glass of red wine, toss a glass in the pan to make a quick pan sauce.

- toasted bread rounds
- leftover roast beef /or/ pastrami /or/ corned beef
- horseradish
- mayo
- fresh rosemary
mix the h-r, mayo and chopped fresh rosemary with LOTS of cracked pepper, spread generously over th toasted rounds and top with the beef! This is one of my favourite default meals when served with steamed veggies like green beans, spinach or asperagus :)
Good luck!

Chopped onions
celery
green bell peppers
tomatoes, chopped
shrimp
saute first 3 ingredients in olive oil til they begin to soften. Season w/ S+P. Add tomatoes and cook for a few minutes. When they begin to give off their juices, add uncooked shrimp. Cover and cook until shrimp turn pink.
If you want to cheat with the ingredients, thyme and cayenne are nice additions. And even though it's tasty on its own, this dish is more filling served over steamed rice.
Kerosena at 3:30PM on 11/17/08
tortellini, ravioli, OR gnocchi
+ chopped veggies (I used zucchini & onion, but you could do just one or whatever is on hand)
+ chicken broth
+ crushed tomatoes
+ cooked chicken, cut into pieces
=
filling soup. you could always sub out the meat for extra vegetables (if 5 is set in stone for some reason), but either way, soup :)

Boneless chuck roast (4lbs) studded with sliced garlic (about 12 cloves sliced vertically), 1 c. water.
Sprinkle an absured anount of kosher salt and cracked pepper on roast, brown the hell out of it in canola oil, drain off most of the oil, add the water and simmer for approx. 4 hours turning every hour.
Best made the day before. To die for.

Hamburger, bun, cheese, tomato, fries (or chips, if we're not going to be making our own fries). If condiments don't count, add ketchup.
Steak, baked potato, asparagus, sauteed mushrooms. Butter used to saute the mushrooms as well as on the potato. If no one's looking, I'll add sour cream to the spud.
dbcurrie at 6:00PM on 11/17/08
Thanks for the topic...I found it quite the mental exercise to consider what could be done with only 5 ingredients and on the flip side how limited you can be as well.
@dbcurrie...I was thinking cheeseburger while reading the all the responses only to find out you'd beaten me too it...good job :)
A couple of my 5 ingredient ideas...other than cheeseburgers...
Pita Bread...cut into wedges and toasted with olive oil and black pepper
Dip for Pita Chips: Cannellini Beans pureed with Olive oil, roasted garlic, lemon juice, black pepper, salt and thyme or rosemary.
makes for a nice light meal that goes great with a glass or two of wine.
Pie Shell, Eggs, Cream, Asparagus, Fontina = simple Quiche...obviously you can make hundreds of combinations by substituting ingredient X for the asparagus and cheese Y for the Fontina...I'm always amazed at how simple some dishes are.

For the sake of practicality, and considering what's usually available to most cooks with a minimally stocked pantry, I'm assuming that water, herbs, spices, etc., are also excluded, along with the stated oil and S&P.
That said, my two most frequent go-to items are...
Burritos
1. Flour tortillas
2. Meat or scrambled eggs or potatoes or rice
3. Refried beans
4. Cheese
5. Salsa
Fritatta
1. Eggs
2. Cheese
3.-5. Any combo of meat and/or veggies (e.g., onions, spinach, ham, mushrooms, zucchini, bacon, sausage, potatoes, etc.)
But there are SO many other meals that have only 4-6 ingredients...
Traditional Meat-Starch-Veg Plate
Any combo thereof to achieve the requisite five ingredients. E.g., one I made just recently...
1. Grilled steak
2. Sauteed mushrooms (on top of the steak)
3. Fried or roasted potatoes
4. Sauteed spinach
5. Roasted brussels sprouts
Chicken Soup
1. Stock or broth
2. Chicken
3. Carrots
4. Celery
5. Onions (or other veg or noodles or rice)
Kebabs
1. Meat cubes (beef, chicken, lamb, etc.)
2. Red peppers
3. Onions
4. Mushrooms
5. Brown rice
Stroganoff
1. Beef
2. Onions
3. Stock
4. Sour cream
5. Noodles
Broccoli (or Cauliflower) Cheese Soup
1. Stock
2. Broccoli (or cauliflower)
3. Carrots
4. Onions
5. Cheese
Split Pea (or bean) Soup
1. Dried split peas
2. Onions
3. Carrots
4. Celery
5. Ham or bacon
Tomato Soup, Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Crudite
1. Store-bought tomato soup (try Imagine brand)
2. Bread
3. Cheese
4. Carrot sticks
5. Celery sticks (or radishes or cucumbers or whatever else floats your boat)
And the all-time classic standby...
Sandwiches
1. Bread
2.-5. Anything four sandwichable things you've got on hand!
