Five ingredient meals!

Anyone got any ideas for 5 ingredient meals? That's not including olive oil and s/p as any of the five, btw!

Anyone? Anyone?

Merci beaucoup!

Meg3j,

Give me the ingredients you want, I'll give you a recipe. :)

Alan

1. pasta
2. canned san marzano tomatoes
3. basil
4. onion
5. parmesan cheese

= pasta pomodoro. exactly 5! (again, not including olive oil & s/p)

san marzano tomatoes are a must in a tomato based sauce...good stuff!!

short pasta
beans
tomato puree
sage
garlic

This gives you pasta e fagioli, as eaten with joy throughout Tuscany :)

There is also 'Peposo':
beef
crushed tomatoes
garlic
(for this one you actually need to count salt and pepper as ingredients, to get five!)

butternut squash soup! one of my favorite, and easiest, things to make in winter

1. butternut squash (obvs)
2. onion
3. chicken stock
4. apple juice
5. toast for croutons on top!
(plus the oil & salt)

Pasta, fresh tomatoes, basil, fresh mozzarella.

To change the dish, the fifth ingredient can be shrimp, chicken, shallots, scallions, olives, garlic, green peas, onion, green pepper, mushrooms, sausage or bacon.

The fresh basil could be subbed with oregano, tarragon, thyme, marjoram or parsley; or you could use a dried herb, a spice mix, or even a hot pepper. If you use a dried herb, you'd need to start it with the tomatoes rather than tossing it in at the last second with the mozzarella.

The cheese could be feta for a mediterranean flavor, or you could grate just about any other cheese on top for serving. If you use the fresh mozz, you cube it and add it just after the pasta meets the sauce. Toss it through and serve.

Or take the cheese out and use two of the optionals.

If your spice of choice had a cajun flavor, you could put this over rice instead of pasta. Or use coucous, bulghur, or anything else that sounds good.

I guess the only thing I didn't offer a substitute for was the tomatoes. That's easy. Use a pesto instead. Okay, pesto is a blend of inredients, but if you just happen to have some on hand, it feels like one ingredient. Hmmm, I suppose you could also sub mushrooms for the tomatoes, and maybe use a creamy substance instead of the cheese. Like mushrooms and sour cream....

So how many recipes is that. Can you tell that I'm hungry and I haven't decided what I want yet?

Onion
Split peas (or frozen peas)
Curry powder (or fresh mint)
Chicken broth
=
pea soup

Or if you want a "real" meal...
Pork Tenderloin (seared and oven roasted, or butterflied and smeared with...)
Dijon mustard (and coated with black pepper, preferably crushed, then cooked over medium heat)
Green beans (steamed and tossed with some of the mustard and olive oil)
Potatoes (boiled and mashed with...)
Buttermilk.
If you're having a glass of red wine, toss a glass in the pan to make a quick pan sauce.

- toasted bread rounds
- leftover roast beef /or/ pastrami /or/ corned beef
- horseradish
- mayo
- fresh rosemary

mix the h-r, mayo and chopped fresh rosemary with LOTS of cracked pepper, spread generously over th toasted rounds and top with the beef! This is one of my favourite default meals when served with steamed veggies like green beans, spinach or asperagus :)

Good luck!

Chopped onions
celery
green bell peppers

tomatoes, chopped

shrimp

saute first 3 ingredients in olive oil til they begin to soften. Season w/ S+P. Add tomatoes and cook for a few minutes. When they begin to give off their juices, add uncooked shrimp. Cover and cook until shrimp turn pink.

If you want to cheat with the ingredients, thyme and cayenne are nice additions. And even though it's tasty on its own, this dish is more filling served over steamed rice.

tortellini, ravioli, OR gnocchi
+ chopped veggies (I used zucchini & onion, but you could do just one or whatever is on hand)
+ chicken broth
+ crushed tomatoes
+ cooked chicken, cut into pieces
=
filling soup. you could always sub out the meat for extra vegetables (if 5 is set in stone for some reason), but either way, soup :)

Scallops , asparagus, barley, shitake mushrooms chicken broth. Barlotto (risotto w/ barley)

*whole chicken
*potatoes (sweet, regular, both, or any other root veg combo)
*garlic
*rosemary

Olive oil, s & p.

You've got a one-roasting-pan-meal of roast chicken & root veg.

Boneless chuck roast (4lbs) studded with sliced garlic (about 12 cloves sliced vertically), 1 c. water.

Sprinkle an absured anount of kosher salt and cracked pepper on roast, brown the hell out of it in canola oil, drain off most of the oil, add the water and simmer for approx. 4 hours turning every hour.

Best made the day before. To die for.

Oh, and since I just posted a recipe:

*scallions
*sesame oil
*spinach
*bay scallops
*white miso paste

miso soul with spinach and scallops.

argh, soup, not soul.

Japanese curry rice
- Japanese curry bricks
- beef
- potatoes
- carrots
- celery

Chili
- beef
- beans
- celery
- tomatoes
- chili powder

Tempura
- tempura batter mix (flour)
- egg
- water
- your choice of what you want deep fried (shrimp, shredded cabbage, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, etc.)
(oh crud, the dipping sauce -- soy sauce and lots of grated daikon)

(really simple) Okonomiyaki
- flour
- egg
- shredded cabbage
Sauce
- tonkatsu sauce
- mayonnaise

Yes, I hate onions. :P

Hamburger, bun, cheese, tomato, fries (or chips, if we're not going to be making our own fries). If condiments don't count, add ketchup.

Steak, baked potato, asparagus, sauteed mushrooms. Butter used to saute the mushrooms as well as on the potato. If no one's looking, I'll add sour cream to the spud.

Thanks for the topic...I found it quite the mental exercise to consider what could be done with only 5 ingredients and on the flip side how limited you can be as well.

@dbcurrie...I was thinking cheeseburger while reading the all the responses only to find out you'd beaten me too it...good job :)

A couple of my 5 ingredient ideas...other than cheeseburgers...

Pita Bread...cut into wedges and toasted with olive oil and black pepper

Dip for Pita Chips: Cannellini Beans pureed with Olive oil, roasted garlic, lemon juice, black pepper, salt and thyme or rosemary.

makes for a nice light meal that goes great with a glass or two of wine.

Pie Shell, Eggs, Cream, Asparagus, Fontina = simple Quiche...obviously you can make hundreds of combinations by substituting ingredient X for the asparagus and cheese Y for the Fontina...I'm always amazed at how simple some dishes are.

onion
red pepper
chicken breast
salsa

chop onion and pepper, cook until soft, i like mine just starting to brown, put aside. in same pan cook cubed chicken, add veggies back to pan and add a lg. bottle of salsa. simmer for 15 min. put in a wrap or eat with goya yellow rice.

-Brown 1/2# of lamb sausage, then cut into coins. Set aside.
-Sautee a diced large onion (does olive oil count as an ingredient?)
-Add one large can of diced tomatoes
-bring to boil then set to simmer
-Add sausage, one large can of white beans, and a bag of frozen spinach
-Simmer for 20-30 minutes

1 lb ground beef - browned and drained
macaroni - cook and drained
canned tomatoes or tomato sauce
garlic and/or onions

mix all together and top with grated cheese --- cheddar, Parm or whatever

Arugula sauteed in olive oil, salt, pepper
seared sea scallops
deglaze pan with sherry
add butter & garlic

pile Arugula on plate
place sea scallops around pile
drizzle pan sauce of garlic/sherry/butter over scallops

Arborio rice
wine
onion
butter
parmagiana reggiano

Make Risotto

Whoops, that wouldn't work -- skip the butter so you can use stock.

For the sake of practicality, and considering what's usually available to most cooks with a minimally stocked pantry, I'm assuming that water, herbs, spices, etc., are also excluded, along with the stated oil and S&P.

That said, my two most frequent go-to items are...

Burritos
1. Flour tortillas
2. Meat or scrambled eggs or potatoes or rice
3. Refried beans
4. Cheese
5. Salsa

Fritatta
1. Eggs
2. Cheese
3.-5. Any combo of meat and/or veggies (e.g., onions, spinach, ham, mushrooms, zucchini, bacon, sausage, potatoes, etc.)

But there are SO many other meals that have only 4-6 ingredients...

Traditional Meat-Starch-Veg Plate
Any combo thereof to achieve the requisite five ingredients. E.g., one I made just recently...
1. Grilled steak
2. Sauteed mushrooms (on top of the steak)
3. Fried or roasted potatoes
4. Sauteed spinach
5. Roasted brussels sprouts

Chicken Soup
1. Stock or broth
2. Chicken
3. Carrots
4. Celery
5. Onions (or other veg or noodles or rice)

Kebabs
1. Meat cubes (beef, chicken, lamb, etc.)
2. Red peppers
3. Onions
4. Mushrooms
5. Brown rice

Stroganoff
1. Beef
2. Onions
3. Stock
4. Sour cream
5. Noodles

Broccoli (or Cauliflower) Cheese Soup
1. Stock
2. Broccoli (or cauliflower)
3. Carrots
4. Onions
5. Cheese

Split Pea (or bean) Soup
1. Dried split peas
2. Onions
3. Carrots
4. Celery
5. Ham or bacon

Tomato Soup, Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Crudite
1. Store-bought tomato soup (try Imagine brand)
2. Bread
3. Cheese
4. Carrot sticks
5. Celery sticks (or radishes or cucumbers or whatever else floats your boat)

And the all-time classic standby...

Sandwiches
1. Bread
2.-5. Anything four sandwichable things you've got on hand!

I got one: French Onion chicken and the 5 ingredients INCLUDE two side dishes. Here they are:

2-4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
French onions
1 egg
green beans
brown rice

Chew on That

Yes. Here is a great recipe for low calorie mashed potatoes and low calorie mashed sweet potatoes with less than 5 ingredients. Delicious, low calorie, and easy to make!! :) Enjoy!
