Eggnog -- Love it or hate it? What do you put in it?
Until I tasted the eggnog from the local dairy, I never liked the stuff. Now, I look forward to the season, and I've just now finished the first glass of the season.
I've tried it with bourbon, brandy, and rum, and it's all been good.
What do you put in your eggog?

Love it, with brandy. Haven't tried anything else in it, though... I've got some Captain Morgan I'll have to try it with.

I like it virgin with a little nutmeg on top.

This is probably the grossest thing ever invented!
Imagine what it was like back in the 50's?
I gag every time I think of it or see a sign for it.
I am gagging as I type.......Augg

Rum and a can of coconut milk. Pinch of cinnamon and a few pinches of nutmeg. Called coquito. Is so very good. Careful it can be powerful the flavor hides the booze.

Simply looking at eggnog puts a look on my face vaguely reminiscent of Munch's "The Scream"
HeartofGlass at 5:20AM on 11/05/08
The kids and I try different ones every year, from the powdered "just add milk" mixes, to our own handmade, to the better stuff (in glass bottles!) from nearby Calder Dairy. While we have our faves, we'll drink it any way we can.
I don't think you can appreciate egg nog without being able to enjoy real milk with higher milkfats to begin with.

I don't know..........I think in small doses and I have to be in the mood, and yes it has to have brandy in it with nutmeg on top.
pjracz10 at 5:50AM on 11/05/08
What would I put in eggnog? The contents of my stomach. Urgh.
Southern_bella at 7:01AM on 11/05/08
Perhaps if it had been spiked the first time I tried it, I would feel differently. Yuck.
izatryt at 7:56AM on 11/05/08
Love eggnog, either alcoholic or virgin, with a couple of scrapes of nutmeg. :D
therealchiffonade at 9:00AM on 11/05/08
I like it spiked and hold the eggnog!
Speaking of that every time I watch Christrmas Vacation I dry heave watching Clarky sucking down the Nog right out of the bowl. Gross
nhfoodie at 9:32AM on 11/05/08
I have never tried it, but my husband loves it. There's just something about drinking eggs that puts me off.
DCraver at 9:48AM on 11/05/08
love eggnog but cant have the milk anymore so I'm going to have to stick with the soy nog which isnt awful, just much better with a little burbon. I also use eggnog in my sweet potato pie.
huneybumper at 10:38AM on 11/05/08
Yumm! Love egg nog with Hisch Bourbon...16year Reserve. Now, that's a holiday!
Corrinne at 10:49AM on 11/05/08
Captain Morgan or Bourbon. I've been known to put the leftover nog in my morning coffee (without the booze).
robincat at 10:56AM on 11/05/08
I drink Braums egg nog only. And in a juice glass for sippin. I sip small amounts. Braums is the only nog i'll drink.. its delicious!
seikel at 10:58AM on 11/05/08
I didn't like it the first time I tried it at age 12. Didn't touch it for over a decade then I had some when my hubby and I first starting dating. Made with bourbon, sipped while decorating the tree, it's so Cristmassy! A couple of years ago, I mixed it with Tuaca and found the flavors ideally compatable. Tuaca all the way baby.
My BIL has a friend who makes eggnog that tastes less like nog and more like a Mudslide, and it is super delicious after dinner instead of dessert.
*sigh* we haven't even had Thanksgiving yet.
wookie at 11:14AM on 11/05/08
I love Starbuck's Eggnog Lates during this season...they steam the nog and use it instead of milk, and it's VERY yummy.
I always buy the Jack Daniels' brand of eggnog that shows up this time of year in the dairy case, and I rush home to have a cup, sprinkled with nutmeg and a dash of my own Jack Daniels...and then the rest of the quart sits in my fridge for a while....because usually one cup of the stuff is enough for the season for me. It's so heavy on it's own.
But adding it to coffee instead of cream is good.
juliebugsmama at 11:20AM on 11/05/08
I've only tried it once, and I'm not sure it even counts as "once" - it was a small carton I bought at Wawa several years ago, wondering if I would like it or not. I didn't. That was it.
brooke29 at 11:21AM on 11/05/08
I love a small juice glass of the stuff every year. Virgin, please. And purists will hate this, but I enjoy all varieties- low fat artificially flavored, regular dairy case, fancy pants dairy case, and home made.
Kerosena at 11:32AM on 11/05/08
Hate. Even with alcohol. Maybe if I drink the alcohol first I can get past the nog...
AuntJone at 11:32AM on 11/05/08
When I was a very little girl, I used to make it for my grandmother - her recipe, and at her request. Since she loved her brandy, I'm sure she added that part herself. I love, love, love eggnog. We have a local dairy - Rosenbergers, who make delicious eggnog. Not always easy to find, as it sells out quickly. If I can't find it, then I make my own and have to search out a recipe. Always sprinkle with freshly grated nutmeg. Sometimes add brandy, but prefer it virgin. We always sipped it while trimming the Christmas tree. Goes great with cookies.

Oops, guest my post didn't go through last night.
I like egg nog plain.
Last week, we bought organic egg nog and peppermint nog at Target. The egg nog was pretty good, and the peppermint nog wasn't that bad. I wish there were chunks of peppermint in it. I can't wait 'til the grocery store I go to stocks their "old fashioned" egg nog in that funky silver foil carton. It is THICK.
Before I met my husband, he bought ~25 cartons of egg nog one winter and drank it all himself. He couldn't pass it up at 50 cents per quart a few days before Christmas and then a week after Christmas, when they were going for 25 cents per quart. He didn't drink egg nog for (only) 2-3 years after that. We do that with fruitcake. Mmmm...fruitcake.
I can't stand holiday nog.
Cassaendra at 12:51PM on 11/05/08
Advocaat (eggnog) mixed with lemonade to make a "snowball"! Very festive.
snowmoonelk at 12:58PM on 11/05/08
dbcurrie,
I've only ever tried the kind from my local grocery store--and I'm not a big fan.
I had never thought of going to my local dairy though! I'm sure it would taste much more authentic and rich; I should look into this.
I'm not really a fan of rum, but I've had some egg nogg with Kaluah, with Créme de cacao, with amaretto, and with Brandy. Kaluah and Créme de cacao tastes great tho, I recommend trying it with cheap egg nogg--it might over-power the good quality kind :)
hungrychristel at 1:02PM on 11/05/08
I like eggnog plain as well. I usually mix it with milk to make it less thick. I usually have about 3 glasses of it or so during the holidays - I can't drink too much of it. Too rich. But delicious!
lo82070 at 1:06PM on 11/05/08
i like it, but i'm lactose intolerant, so i can't go overboard often.
typically i prefer it virgin w/nutmeg, but spiked is pretty delicious too.
i also like fruitcake.
gastronomeg at 1:13PM on 11/05/08
I could drink a gallon of it a day, if I thought I could get away with it! I usually buy the store-brand holiday nog. It's pretty thick and rich, and well priced, for egg nog.
My favorite way to dress it up is with Amaretto. Those two flavors together are simply delish!
A friend made home-made eggnog last holiday season - the real, old-timey, authentic stuff. It had to age and everything. We had that with rum and fresh nutmeg grated on top, and it was to-die-for!
skookumouzel at 1:24PM on 11/05/08
I love eggnog - have since I was a kid! Bourbon - Makers Mark to be exact is the only way to fly; although Captain Morgan's will work in a pinch.
The best part, though, is the bread pudding made with Pannetone and eggnog instead of milk. I still use the eggs and sometimes the heavy cream! Yum.
Fanciesmom at 1:26PM on 11/05/08
eggnog? Blech. A quarter to never. I cannot deal with eggs, except, with one exception.
Scrambled, by me, after having as much air as possible beaten into them with my immersion blender and kissed with heavy cream and kosher salt and yes...I like my eggs to be slightly browned!
ChelleyD01 at 3:07PM on 11/05/08
@ chelley - I'm anti-egg as well (not by choice); something about eating undeveloped embrios I guess--it's definitely the yolks that make me cringe.
My exception [contrary to my adoration and young love of raw foods] is that I love scrambled eggs welldone and browned with lots of chilis! Then they're actually tolerable. I should try this in my immersion blender as well...
hungrychristel at 3:44PM on 11/05/08
Love making my own "Nog" but I have to be beaten with a chain to keep from drinking it all immediately. What do I put in it? fresh nutmeg, if it's storebought..... booze, and lots of it.... dark rum.
Pavlov at 5:52PM on 11/06/08
You might as well drink pancake batter.
soberchef at 11:41PM on 11/06/08
eggnog (virgin or spiked) not so much ~ like eggnog (an organic variety) in coffee very much as a holiday treat
petitesoeur at 1:15AM on 11/07/08
hungrychristel - an egg is not an undeveloped embryo! It would have to be fertilised first, and hens lay eggs whether they are fertilised or not...:) The yolk of the egg is the food store for the chick were the egg fertilised. So, enjoy!
snowmoonelk at 4:02AM on 11/07/08
I make a non-alcoholic version of Coquito - the Puerto Rican cousin of the eggnog. What lacks in alcohol, makes up in spiciness.

@Hunnyoil ~ you said, "Imagine what it was like in the '50's".....I don't need to imagine. Granted, I was just a little kid, but I made it and loved it. The only difference then from now was that you had to make it yourself and it was SO delicious. I've tasted a couple of the supermarket brands and they don't even resemble real egg nog. I threw them out. Is real egg nog rich and fattening as hell? Oh yeah, and that's why it's a seasonal treat. It wouldn't be Christmas without it for my family. If you've only tasted nogs you buy, try making the real thing - treat yourself!
