Day Trip to NYC
So me and my girlfriend are thinking about taking the train from Philly to NYC for a Saturday or Sunday in the next few weeks. She has never been and I've only gone a few times. Any suggestions on what to do and where to go would be great. Nothing too fancy, we're trying to make this an affordable day. Thanks!

my g/f and i hit this place on our city trips- a real elegant snack for reasonable prices.. and something to bring back for friends/family!

Bleeker Street Pizza and a cupcake from Magnolia - both in the West Village - as is Gray's Papaya (hotdogs). All cheap and you can explore the shops. Also, Mario Batalli's restaurant Po is nearby, and it's suprisingly cheap for a gourmet "name" lunch. Don't think I'm crazy, but the Museum of Sex is a hoot and pretty affordable. Fun for a couple. A walk down to Ground Zero is worth it and free. Either stay downtown or buy a picnic and cruise through Central Park - stop at FAO Schwartz and the Guggenheim with a hot dog in hand.

Lower East Side: Katz's Deli, Il Laboratorio Del Gelato, Murray's Cheese Shop, Guss's Pickles, Rocco's Pastry Shop (cannoli). If you pace yourself you could snack at all of them and then still have dinner at Lupa. I'm living proof.

if you're going to go to the museum of sex, get the coupon from the web site or a.m.n.y. it's kitschy and unique, but i think the city has better offerings.
my foolproof visitor day is some variation of: dim sum at jing fong in chinatown. walk across the brooklyn bridge (it's right there). pizza at grimaldi's and ice cream at the brooklyn ice cream factory. hang out in brooklyn or walk/subway back into manhattan and wander around the village/les/soho until something catches your eye.

avoid ground zero, it's a construction site crawling surrounded by tourists.

Lupa or Otto Enoteca are very affordable dinner choices. John's Pizza on Bleecker, is by far one of the best pies in the city but if you want a little more atmosphere, go to their Theatre District location. I agree with Rocco's and Gray's Papaya, very affordable and very good. If you can't get to Grimaldi's, try Lombardi's in Little Italy. And who can forget the street food in the city is excellent - you can get great falafels, salads, shwarmas, and don't forget Sabrett dogs.

kwhit, mario batali does not own po any longer -- he sold it to his partners many years ago.
having said that, i can heartily recommend it, or lupa, for lunch.

what's your day's budget? (excluding train tickets)
ilhyungl at 10:07AM on 11/12/08
I don't neccessarily have a set budget, but I would like to keep it around $200 or so, excluding travel costs...I appreciate all the ideas so far!

Any of the Momfuku restaurants in the East Village are great values. The food will knock your socks off, the vibe is fun, and the chef is a reall deal up and commer in terms of national and worldwide regocnition and acclaim. No reservations neccesary, dinner or lunch for two can squeak out safely under $40 total.

Our favorite thing to do is ride the ferry over to Staten Island and ride past the Statue of Liberty - great pictures and you can stand down on the bottom of the ferry on the outside part - no one else was down there. And it's totally free!!
Grab a burger at The Burger Joint @ Le Parker Meridien - it is this funky hole in the wall behind a curtain of this gorgeous hotel -
Stay as late as you can to see the lights on Times Square - Canal Street is a must - just don't go into any secret back rooms for Coach purse!
We're flying up for Christmas to stay with my son in Brooklyn and are planning a two day trip to Philly - can you tell me about the train/cost - inexpensive things to do there?
Have fun!

in no particular order
1) The Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle is doing the "Holiday Under the Stars" until Dec. 21st. It starts at 5 pm and goes until midnight. It's basically an elaborate light show, but it's worth checking out if you're visiting the city: Free
2) Bryant Park ice skating: Free
3) Shake Shack (although if you're in the city for a day, waiting in line may seem like a waste of time) : $20 - $30 for two people
4) Ippudo (great ramen place): $20 - $30 for two people
5) Momofuku Ssam Bar: $50 - $100 for two people
6) Momofuku Milk Bar (more of a dessert place, never been... but seems like it would be awesome and hopefully it'll be open when you get here)
7) Pizza at Artichoke: $10 - $15 for two people

Oh, no, not Magnolia, unless you're prepared to wait in line for ages alongside twittering Sex and the City fans for,...a cupcake.

Whatever you do, make sure you bring a street and subway map. Naturally they sell them in Grand Central, so you might as well pick one up!
