Birthday Dinner

I've got a 30th coming up in January and need to start thinking about where to have dinner. The crowd will be a bunch of fun foodies (+/-10) so I wanted to poke around and see what suggestions Serious Eaters could drum up. Last year was a big ol' Momofuku Bo Ssam with all the fixins and I'd like to do something similar - cool atmosphere, great food, good wine, big table, and decent price (especially given the economy this year). Oh yeah, maybe something you can't/don't really do every day.

Suggest away...I'm so eager to hear what everyone has to say! I live in the East Village but that doesn't necessarily have to factor into your suggestions.

Do "the whole shebang" at Alta where you get one of every tapas dish on the menu.

Otto!! We had my sister-in-law's bachelorette dinner there and it was perfect. Call ahead if you are a group - I think there is info on the website for a group prix-fix (much easier to deal with when the check comes)

Zazibar on 9th ave in the 50s is my favorite bday joint. It's trendy, class great small plates and amazing drinks! LOVE the Eruption! The tables are situated to make it easy to talk and lounge.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I was hoping for more input but I do have some time before the event in January. I really like the idea of the she-bang at Alta...that was definitely on the short list before I posted the thread and it's good to see you agree, Kathryn!

I heartily second the recommendation for Otto. Also, I'd look into Blue Ribbon Brasserie, Blue Ribbon Bakery, Freemans, Tia Pol, maybe some of the other spots that ONLY take reservations for large parties. This might be your ticket in to somewhere that usually has a 2 hour wait.
