Beets on a Burger

I read about how Australians love beets on their burgers.

How many of you like beets?

How many of you add it to burgers?

Beets taste like dirt.
Dirtburger=do not want

That made my nose wrinkle thinking about it, while looking at the remains of my half-hamburger that I'm tossing out from lunch today. The side order of mandarin orange-cranberry couscous on the side was way too much food, but way too delicious.

I really have to be in the mood for beets to eat it. I don't hate or love it. I'll have to try it in a hamburger one day.

I have a very strong aversion to beets. They are not allowed in my house at all. Ever. (lucky for my OH, he shares my aversion).

I'm pretty open minded, but beets... on a burger? no Thanks.

I absolutely LOVE beets. There was a restaurant that we went to when I was little and they put beets on their burger - it was heaven! I vaguely remember that it had swiss cheese, cooked spinach, beets (the canned variety), sour cream "sauce", sprouts and I'm not sure what else. I think it was on a wheat bun - it was the best. This is what I ordered every time we went there, even for breakfast!

I love beets! And, having been to Sydney several times, I for one, fully endorse beets on a burger. They add extra juiciness and a earthy flavor. I actually have a can of beets(a friend pulled it from her cupboard and sent it home with me from Australia) in my pantry that I keep forgetting to put on my burgers. Next time I'll remember, for sure.

i love beets.

there's a restaurant here in columbus called northstar that makes an amazing veggie burger, mostly consisting of beets. i think most of you would be surprised at just how good it tastes-even if you have an aversion to them.

i've never thought to try it with an actual burger tho...i'd totally give it a go.

@sailordave - Yes, I agree they do! Strangely enough that's what I love about'em! Mmmm... soil flavour LOL

I'm up for beets on anything that's recommended

Beets. They may look good but their taste makes me shudder.

I love beets (pickled or roasted), but I would never put them on a burger. I just don't think that their flavor would compliment what I usually put on a burger, not to mention the burger itself.

I LOVE beets. Which ones do they put on, pickled or roasted?
I'm going to have to try that.
Roasted, on a veggie burger, with a little plain yogurt.....

i lived in australia for a while and was amazed that virtually every burger comes with beet-root (pronounced bee-troot) AND a fried egg.

as for the beet, it's not a bad compliment adding a sweet note and slightly crunchy texture component. at first i used to chuck it immediately before the first bite, but after a while i honestly came to appreciate it.

but if you think ketchup stains, then dripping beet juice from a sloppy burger can be a nightmare. i had a rugby jersey that has a permanent red stripe down the center.

@sailordave you got that 100% right and I will not eat them period let alone on a sweet innocent lil burger

Beets are a root veggie, so it makes sense they would taste "earthy". LOVE the beets!!! Having never had them on a burger, I feel I must experience that taste sensation. I believe I will go for the pickled beets to begin with. Replace the pickles.......

@sailordave ~ Dirtburger? That is so wrong!

I had my first beet-on-a-burger in Sydney too. Just a few thin slices like tomatoes. It gave the burger a sweet, earthy flavor. I don't add it to my burger often because I usually don't have beets on hand.

But the fried egg on a burger? Oh heck yes. I do that too often. Ask my arteries.

I love beets in any manner-- pickled (sweet and sour), shredded and cooked in butter, or roasted, but on a burger.... don't know about that one. But you know what, I will try them next time we cook burgers -- never say never.

I wonder how they would taste in a cheese burger...lol.

I love beets, and a pickled beet on a burger sounds really good to me. Also good on a burger: roasted green chiles, fried zucchini, and, of course, the fried egg.

They have the beets on burgers in New zealand also... At Mc Donalds even! Kiwi Burgers. Don't hate on the beet, its one of the sexiest vegetables out there (Tom Robbins would agree). Refine your palates!

Pickled beets are great on a burger (recipe: http://blog.nermo.com/?p=668), but roasted or otherwise, not so delectable.

The only time I will eat pickled beetroot is on a burger (yes I'm an Aussie), but watch those drippy stains. Jane Grigson calls beetroot "the bossy vegetable" because of it's staining power.
I also love to roast beetroot and eat cold as a salad with Italian parsley, goat cheese, red onion and a red wine vinegar dressing YUM!
Beetroot rocks!!!!!

I agree with sailordave that beets taste like dirt. My husband LOVES them, and I have tried to acquire a taste for them, but to no avail. On that note, no one I know understands my love of raw oysters--they all think they are disgusting and slimy. So I certainly won't knock anyone who loves beets! But personally, not for me.

Aussie burger (at least, from the greasy cafe in Melbourne where I used to have them) - beetroot, fried egg, and a pineapple ring. Yes, horrifying.

I've never thought of putting beets on a burger, but I would imagine that would taste pretty good. I'm normally ambivalent towards beets, but find that it's something I LOVE when I'm pregnant. Whenever I start craving beets, I head out for an EPT. :o)

I'm a kiwi (New Zealander) living in the US, and we have beets (we call them beetroot) on our burgers back home in NZ as well (hell, it's news to me to hear that it is thought of as an 'Aussie' thing).

I love them, seriously ... not to mention normally burgers in NZ will come also come with a fried egg, pineapple, and beetroot (as well as the normal onions, pickles, tomato, and lettuce).

So delicious! I will often purchase a burger to go from one of my local burger places, take it home, and put a fried-egg, pineapple and beetroot on it there.

I'm not a fan of beets in general but I don't mind a pickled beet. I'd put a slice of pickled beet on a burger and give it a whirl. Any other beet preparation making its way to my burger would get an unequivocal thumbs down.

Growing up, we'd have pickled beets from a jar once in a while so I thought that beets were a food that I put in the category of "I don't love it but I don't mind it either." And then I had beets that weren't pickled. I'm afraid that beets then moved into the "do not want" category.

Beets on a Buger? Surely you jest!

Never met a beet I didn't love. Putting one on a burger never would have occurred to me, but why not? It would change the other toppings, though. I wouldn't want it with tomato. Onion, okay. No ketchup either. Pineapple and beets don't sound too bad, but I'd have to try that one in private. My friends and family would call the men in the white coats.

I got so flustered I couldnt spell Burger. The thought of beets just bring me back to times when the dinner table could be more like jail."You're not going anywhere till you eat them beets, Mister."

Sheep Station in Brooklyn has an amazing beet burger, with pineapple and a fried egg. It's really tall, too, and you'll wish you could unhinge your jaw like a snake just to fit it in your mouth.

I love beets and fried eggs on my burgers. It makes a big ,messy and juicy burger that makes any BBQ a success.

I grew up in Australia, and I love beetroot. Particularly on burgers with a fried egg. The American aversion to beets has always baffled me.

I need to try beets that haven't been sitting in a can for 8 months.

I am thinking of making an actual beet burger. Roasted beets and, well, I need to cogitate on that a bit. Sounds like a good idea though! Suggestions welcome, as always!!

@thebasilqueen - I was born and raised in London, England, yet I could never stand beetroot. It's not just an American thing, apparently.Tastes differ, but it doesn't mean that one is better or worse for liking or disliking something.
