Bakeries in Manhattan without all the hype!

What are some of the best bakeries in Manhattan that are not overrated and surrounded with nothing but hype like Magnolia, but instead offer just some seriously, delicious baked confections!??! I guess I'm looking for "the best kept secret" bakeries of the city..nothing tourist-ey or overpriced, just the best!

Magnolia's cupcakes are over hyped but they have other items which are good (banana pudding, icebox pie, etc.)

For so many bakeries, it depends what you're for: cake, cookies, pie, tarts, macarons, etc.

ceci cela in nolita has excellent croissants and french pastries. birdbath is the east village is slightly hype-y but so delicious (same pastries as city bakery). moishe's on 2nd avenue and 6th st. for bow tie kichel and rugelach.

I really like two litte red hens in manhattan and ladybird in brooklyn. (they used to both be two little red hens but the owners went their separate ways). Anyway, YUM! Great cupcakes. And the brooklyn blackout cake is fantastic.

Definitely Billy's. Their stuff is delicious and their atmosphere is not at all commercialized. I also like Amy's Bread for good cupcakes!

I second Two Little Red Hens. Awesome cupcakes and desserts, and I'm a huuuuge fan of their cakes.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine is a popular favorite, but I still have to recommend their banana pudding. Love love love.

tommie's in the village (one on macdougal and one on west third) has some great cupcakes. also second city birdbath - love the eco-theme, and the people there are so nice, we usually walk out with a little something extra on the house. and our first thanksgiving in new york a friend brought an apple pie over from (at least i think it was from) two little red hens - totally amazing.

Don't forget to include: Pinisi Bakery, along with Ciao for Now and Something Sweet (all in the East Village). I'm also a great fan of How Sweet It Is on the Lower East Side. Cheeks Bakery in Williamsburg does some nice treats (had my first pumpkin cheesecake there last week). On the Upper West Side, stick with Margot Patisserie and Soutine Bakery.

D'Auito on 8th Ave btwn 30 and 31 is a great everyday bakery. Good pastries, donuts and really good hard rolls. Never bought a chessecake but that is what they are known for. And in the summer, really great ices at the window in front.

I still sing the praises of Batch, especially if you want a vastly superior non-Magnolia cupcake - dense, not too sweet, with really interesting flavor combinations. If you're on the UWS, they have gotten a little bit of hype, but Levain Bakery's cookies have definitely earned it.

Patisserie Claude in the West Village has the best croissants in the city and is completely unassuming. Birdbath Bakery in the East Village is a branch of City Bakery, but is very quiet and little. Most of the baking for city bakery is actually done at this little place.

I really like Financier in Financial District (they have 3 locations). Their pastries are top-notch and their cakes are delicious! I definitely think that they are underrated, perhaps because of the locations.

i'm a huge fan of the corner bakery on third avenue and 93rd st. i love their cupcakes, their sour cherry cobbler, and their apricot scones, but you seriously can't go wrong there.

Baked, cheeks, Margaret Palka Bakes in Brooklyn.

Wow! So many...and so little time! I definitely plan to make it to as many of these as possible! Maybe I'll be able to test at least one baked good from each location because if I walk everywhere because I'll burn the calories! :-D Thanks for all the input everyone!
