A fun anniversary dinner in NYC?

I know this is SUPER broad, but hubs and I are about to celebrate our third anniversary and we'd like to head in to the city. We have a sitter for the day, and want to enjoy our "sans toddler" status. Where would YOU go, mid-day, for your anniversary? We're leaning towards indulging in a little Chinatown action, but are open to ANYTHING. We love to eat, and love a great deal. Are there any tasting menus for early dinners?

Lunch at Jean-Georges. The price fixe lunch is something ridiculously cheap like $25 or $30 per head. I suggested it to some friends who recently did a five day NYC trip and they were totally blown away by both the food and the service. They described it as one of the best meals they have ever eaten and definitely the best value ever.

Maybe head to Babbo before it opens, to grab one of the few tables reserved for walk-ins? Blue Ribbon Brasserie also opens at 4pm and is typically quite crowded if you go later on in the evening. Ditto for Spotted Pig and Tia Pol. When are you headed in?

@ kathryn - We're heading in on saturday. Those restaurants sound great!
@ phaelon56 - a tasting menu for lunch? Sounds AWESOME!

@phaelon56 again- Oh, so sad! It looks like they only serve the tasting menu M-F for lunch?? :-( Boohoo. $148 a head is a little past what I was thinking of spending. ;-)

What time on Saturday? Just trying to think of spots that start serving dinner around 4pm or 5pm, where you can get seated quickly since it's so early, or where you can make sure your name is first on the list. Balthazar? Yakitori Totto?

@ Kathryn - our schedule is still really open. We'd love to do either a late lunch or an early dinner. I'll check into Balthazar and Yakitori Totto!

what about the bourgeois pig? it's a really great spot in the east village with yummy fondues, a great wine list and some decent champagne cocktails, think it opens on saturdays around 4

@billyburgwife - ooh...fondue! That sounds yummy. :-)

The Bourgeois Pig is fun but not really a foodie destination. It never really seems crowded, and I don't think it's special enough for an anniversary. I might go there after your big dinner, for some drinks.

The Little Owl (warm and intimate), Prune (small and stylish), Knife & Fork (cozy, recently had a great prix fixe dinner bargain) and Del Posto or Morimoto for over the top, splurge-worthy meals. Klee Brasserie has had a number of seasonal dinner deals lately, and has amazing service. If you make a day of it, you can visit Chelsea galleries during the day. Also on that strip of 10th Avenue are Cookshop and Trestle on Tenth for brunch, and Tia Pol or El Quinto Pino for tapas. To keep costs low, you could try Ippudo for some ramen, then follow up with dessert at Chikalicious. The closest thing to a nice restaurant in Chinatown that I know of is Peking Duck House on Mott. For a dive, Joe’s Shanghai all the way. Good luck, and enjoy!

Thanks, everyone, for your help! We're heading into the city in the morning. :-) You all had such great suggestions! After reading loads of reviews, and really THINKING about what we want to do (I'm 8 months pregnant with not much tummy room...otherwise we'd TOTALLY head to a churrascaria!) We're going to get our fill of Asian flavors we can't find at home in Connecticut - great ramen, a trip through the Met, and then a leisurely late afternoon in Chinatown, stocking up on groceries we'll need when my baby is born in December. I should have guessed we'd end up with ramen and Chinese food - our family is half Chinese, and it's our comfort food of choice!
