A Buzzkill Halloween
My desire to create a tiki Halloween for the neighborhood kids had to be shelved for next year. Stuff came up, e.g. I had to attend a funeral yesterday . . . on Halloween. And I didn't even carve a pumpkin.
So, what was your Halloween buzzkill?
Complaints about the candy? Did a kid trip up your front steps and break his arm? Parents want to sue you now? Talk to me.

Eddie, my #2 Cairn had surgery yesterday to remove a blockage and they found a tumor. Did a biopsy, now we wait. The couple of glasses of Chard I had gave me a headache.

As I mentioned in another post, I didn't get to take my 5-year-old out trick-or-treating this year because he was at his dad's house handing out Jesus papers. I missed him an awful lot.

Wow, the only thing that kinda bugged me was the neighbor who showed up with her 4 kids and her husband. We've met before, so I said, "Oh hey! how are you?" Neither of them responded bc the husband was too busy looking over the exterior of my house and the wife was too busy peering over my shoulder into the house (making me sooooo glad I straightened up). Then they both discussed my pumpkin arrangement (several pumpkins arranged on and around a green chair on the front porch), looked pointedly at this gigantic dandelion that sprouted from hell, and then they left. Thank goodness they live two blocks away and not next door.
Izzy, sorry to hear about your Eddie, my thoughts are with you. I found a weird bump on my Carter, 5 month old Black Lab, it's been removed and being biopsied as well. Vet said chances are good it will turn out benign. I hope for the same result for your Eddie.
Susq--my condolences. I know you were really looking forward to your tiki extravaganza...look at it this way, now you have a whole year to make it even more spectacular!

I enjoyed spending the afternoon and evening with my good friend, Mister Streptococcus. I suppose with such a hoarse voice, bloodshot eyes, and a pale face, I could have been frightening enough without a costume to handout candy and attend a local party...but I thought I'd save my friends and neighbors from an epidemic.
I made the best of it, though, and whipped up my grandmother's classic macaroni and cheese. Plopped myself in bed with Ibuprofen, Vick's, and Bravo's Top 100 Scariest Movie Moments, and I was set.
codeblue at 1:26PM on 11/01/08
Gosh--it sounded like we all had snafus on Halloween. I was at the vet earlier this month, and my thoughts and prayers go out to both wookie and iz's pooches--as well as for Susque's human loss. Fortunately, my dog on the mend--dogs can be wonderfully resilient.
Other than getting an late invite to a Halloween party after I had returned home (and missed it) and hardly any trick-or-treaters, though mine can't compare.

Hey Susq ~ I must apologize for not sending my condolences your way. I am very pre-occupied today. I am so sorry for your loss. That is never an easy process to get through.

thursday, even tho i was sick and fevery i still went to work, b/c i had planned on seeing the beastie boys for a solid 3 weeks since they announced it...got my tix presale on the floor-all set. so, after work i took some more medicine and laid down to rest a bit before driving to the show. then i woke up about six hours later and realised i had missed the entire thing. plus, i was my friend's ride, so he missed it too & is none too happy with me. after that huge disappointment i went back to bed and had horrifically terrifying feverish nightmares all night long about my friend and i being kidnapped, tortured, and murdered. not a great way to wake up on halloween. however, after reading all of your woes, i don't feel so bad. instead i send you all good thoughts and put my selfish whining aside.

@Susq--glad your doggie is on the mend, and wookie, too.

Thanks for the kind words. Tiki Halloween 2009 will happen. I hope all the ailing pets get healthy as soon as possible! My goodness.
@codeblue: No joke. My throat started hurting while I raked leaves this afternoon. I wonder if I'm getting a touch of what you have. Hope you feel better soon.
@mayoxqueen: Unless you think the guy had a legit reason for doing so, standing you up will bring him bad juju. Sorry that happened to you.
Susquehanna at 4:07PM on 11/01/08
@izatryt: No worries. :D
@gastronomeg: Nightmares are bad enough. Halloween nightmares would be terrifying! And I wish the Beastie Boys would come to Pittsburgh. They're frickin' great. Feel better soon, too. :D

Halloween was a bust this year. Hardly any houses handing out candy for our little ones, or anyone at all. Of the 3 blocks we covered each street had maybe 2-3 houses giving out candy. The rest were all darkend windows and no one there. It was sad. I miss halloween

Bank bought my house at Sheriff's sale for $100,000 less than I sold it for, but then my septic failed and it took nearly 3 years to get it fixed and the market went south. Went through everything I had in those 3 years, so.....my brother is taking me in. Still have pneumonia, but the pet scan showed no cancer and the way my luck has been running I figured I had a snowball chance in hell of a negative biopsy. So, maybe it's going to get better.
PerkyMac at 6:09PM on 11/01/08
Hope you feel better Perky and glad to here the pet has no cancer.

@ Izzy, my thoughts are with you hun, my maggie is my daughter and best friend and i'd go nuts if anything happened to her.
My halloween was really quiet i went to the dr and found out the last surgery "didnt work" so other than spending the rest of the day in bed crying and indulging in a personal pity party I didnt do much of anything.
SO did make some homemade french onion soup though so that was totally yummy.
huneybumper at 9:07PM on 11/01/08
@Perky we have been with you here at SE community for years now. Keep us reprised of what is happening. All of us here at SE community will surround you with the positive energy that you need to heal up.
Health issues always strike a certain tone with me.
Yesterday for halloween I watched Section 60 on HBO. It is a doco about where the casualties from Iraq/Afg are buried in Arlington. I sat in a chair and cried my eyes out. That was very cathartic.
For all who are not well and whose furbabies are not well I send my positive energy. For those who need a little lift I send that too.
JerzeeTomato at 10:03PM on 11/01/08
@huney ~ Being fairly new to SE, I do not know what you are dealing with. My thoughts are with you! It makes me so sad when I can't just reach out and give a huge hug of support. I am happy you have a loving someone to take care of you!! ;-)
izatryt at 10:22PM on 11/01/08
Oh guys, my stupid cold seems so, well, stupid compared to what you're going through. my thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your furry babies!
Huney and Perky, sending special extra big and warm hugs your way.
brooke29 at 10:24PM on 11/01/08
I consider you guys among my good friends. It breaks my heart to hear of your personal tragedies. Know that you are all in my nightly prayers.
Halloween was shaping up to be a bust. My son didn't have his party (that I've been planning since Sept.) because our football team made it into the AAAA WPIAL football playoffs and the game was last night. At least we won. I decided to dress up anyway, and paid a visit to our local retirement center where my friend works as the activities director. This made my day. I dressed as a 20's flapper and even did the Charleston for the residents. The looks and smiles on their faces made my day. They shared stories of when they were youngsters and dressed for Halloween. We've all got pretty horrific issues going on right now, but we support each other and help take the sting away. These folks had nobody. Really, nobody. Quite a few were in their 90's and had outlived their spouses and even their children. I will be paying them a weekly visit from now on. We all need to know that someone cares for us. I'm thinking about all of you.
Josdean at 12:28AM on 11/02/08
I just got home from my bff's birthday party. I've met all of the people there many times before, but none of them have a clue what's going on in my life (except for my friend and her family, of course). I just said I was great and talked about my children and my little granddaughter. I feel more comfortable telling yuze guys (couldn't resist the Philly-speak....;) haha what's going on. I don't participate in any other forums, this feels like and IS friends encouraging and caring about each other. It means a lot to me. You all mean a lot to me.
Huney, you are in my prayers daily. I wish I could be there for you. Buffy, it has to be so hard not having your little boy with you on Halloween. Sara (susq), I'm sorry you lost someone. Jerz & brooke, I just luv ya. For those who are sick or having a rough time, or being stood up, or worrying about your beloved pets, we all feel for you, we've all been there, and we care. How awesome is that? You all make me smile through my tears. Iz, I'm sending Eddie all the good vibes you always send me. Let us know, k? Time for a nightcap! ;-D

@Josdean ~ when I was going through a very painful divorce, after 30 years of marriage, I was a mess and just couldn't do real estate. I saw an ad for a local nursing home and they hired me to do activities. It's the only job I've ever had that I absolutely loved. For two years, I gave everything I had to give, and I got so much more than I gave. I would fall on the couch with my coat still on and fall asleep - that's how exhausting it was, but I never got so much love in my life. I would have stayed forever, but they didn't pay much and would only let me work 39 hours. I still visit all the time, and encourage all to get into the habit, if you have any spare time. I still play the piano and sing with them and they love it. They love visitors and seldom get them. You'll get so much more than you can even imagine.
PerkyMac at 12:44AM on 11/02/08
awwwwwww...
I've only been posting on this board for about a month and I can't believe how nice and supportive youall are.
My disappointment seems really paltry in comparison to some of the issues being discussed here, so thank you for making me see things in another light and my heart goes out to all of you (especially Perky, Josdean, Susq, Jerzee, Brooke and Izatryl). I know I'll be reading and posting here all through the holidays!
much love, everyone!

@ Perky - Ironically, my friend who is activities director at the retirement center started working there two years ago when she was going through a divorce from her husbund of 20 years and her house was sold at sheriff's sale. She had just recovered from a year bout with hepatitus which almost did her in. She says she owes her current sanity to her job which, as you said, is absorbing, rewarding but low-paying. Recently, she was able to scrape together enough money to buy a modest home for her and her two teenage sons. Things will work out for you too, I am sure.
@ mayoxqueen - welcome and thanks for your well-wishes.
Josdean at 1:53AM on 11/02/08
Welcome mayoxqueen!
I need to add a comment. I discovered SE one day earlier this year while poking around on the food network site looking for a recipe. I saw the Serious Eats ad and out of curiosity, I clicked on the link. I never imagined such a simple singular moment would bring me here!
We all have different lives, but food and all things related to food brought us to SE. The conversations and sharing of experiences have made us a "community". Sure we get feisty from time to time, but at the end of the day, this is where we come for support, advice and get our tough questions answered. This is what friends are for. Thank you, my friends.
@Susq ~ Thank you for starting this thread and again, I am sorry for your loss.
@Perk ~ I know you will have a happy ending. You know you are always in my thoughts and prayers.
@huney ~ You have made my official daily prayer list.
@pjracz ~ Perky doesn't have a pet. ;-)
@All ~ You guys rock!
Okay ~ True Confession time ~ Eddie is the primary reason I do not use my oven. He goes spastic if I turn it on. Eddie is 12. He trembles and cries and runs to the back door to go out and get away from the sound, the pitch from the electronic control panel. I will happily leave the oven off in exchange for having Eddie come home.

Very glad this thread allowed people to share their stories and relate!
@wookie: Those neighbors are such weirdos. I know people like that, though.
My sister has neighbors living directly behind her who are horrible. In her neighborhood, 8 p.m. meant the official end of trick-or-treating, so she blew out all the candles in her carved pumpkins and turned off her front porch lights. Then, she put my 3 year old nephew to bed. At 8:30 p.m., the neighbor living behind her brought his two older kids over to her house and rang the door bell!
Mind you, the porch is dark and he knows she has a 3 month old and a 3 year old who are probably in bed! I'm tempted to give him the stinkeye if I see him when we're at her house for Thanksgiving.

I spent the last 3.5 out of four weeks in the hospital. Got out Thurs. PM. No punks, barely managed to get candy fol the tots.

I got back from the gym early Saturday morning to find that my BF's friend, who had slept on our couch, threw up on that couch, the carpet, the bathroom floor, and numerous small objects I now have to burn. After hours of bleaching and scrubbing and Febreeze-ing, I can still smell it. Fantastic.
embolini9 at 7:43PM on 11/02/08
@beano--congrats on your good health!
My best wishes to everyone who is having a hard time right now. This is a wonderful community to come together in, where everyone is doing best by each other.

@everyone: My sincerest thoughts are with everyone having a hard time right now, whether on Halloween or any time. I agree with @Josdean - you guys are my friends, even if we never meet - so I hope for the very best for all of you.
For me, since misery loves company, I will only add that I am so demoralized at my work right now, that I actually sat and cried at my cubical on Friday. Thank goodness that no one generally comes in on Fridays (we can all work from home, and most do for most of the time). I just don't know what to do and I feel as though I am in between a rock and hard place right now.
But, that is a small thing, compared to what others are facing, so thank you for showing me that I need to just buck up, because I am (and I do usually feel this way - just not with what has happened recently at work) truly lucky to have what I have.
Take care, all of you!
Traveller at 9:32PM on 11/02/08
@beano ~ 3 weeks is a very long time to spend in the hospital, especially considering they now think of giving birth and having mastectomies as out-patient events. I'm sure you're still recovering. Hopefully, you have someone at home to give you a hand? If you need nutrition advice or ideas for recipes, just ask. There is a wealth of information, love and help here. Quick recovery, my friend.
@izatryt ~ I totally understand why you'd not want to inflict pain on your sweet little Eddie. You must be a master griller by now. I could use a new recipe for boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Ok, that's true, but we are all worried about you and are hoping Eddie is getting better. Need an update!
PerkyMac at 11:57PM on 11/02/08
I live in Korea. People don't celebrate Halloween except for the annoying drunk Westerners. I would have loved to pass out candy to some cute kids but instead I just ate seafood pizza and watched Saw 5.
smile at 1:36AM on 11/03/08
@ perky oopps sorry about that, I do not know what a "pet scan" is.
pjracz10 at 1:47AM on 11/03/08
@izzy whom is Eddie, he sounds like a character lol.
pjracz10 at 1:52AM on 11/03/08
@pj ~ Eddie is iz's beloved middle doggie (of 3) who is 12 and very sick. See the first comment above.
A PET scan is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test - for cancer, heart disease and brain diseases, mainly. In my case, I still have a mass around my windpipe (detected with a CT scan aka cat scan) that is pneumonia and might have been lung cancer. No need to apologize. I've never had pneumonia before and this was my first PET scan. I can't tell you how shocked and relieved I was with the results.
PerkyMac at 2:15AM on 11/03/08
Late yesterday, we received our first positive report on Eddie. I was so happy! His vitals are stable and he actually ate a few bites of food. I am headed over to visit him today.
izatryt at 8:10AM on 11/03/08
Izatryt I'm so happy for you! it sounds like Eddie may be on his way home soon. You can be sure you're all in my thoughts and prayers.

@iz, I'm so pleased to hear that! If anything happened to my Frankie or Lola, I would be absolutely devastated. Make sure you give him plenty of hugs and kisses when you visit.
@huney - you've been in my thoughts and prayers and I hope they find something that does work for you. Please know that we're here for you.
@Perky - how are you holding up? You haven't moved yet, have you? I hope things will work out for you, even if not right away, I really do and I'll keep praying for that.
brooke29 at 6:13PM on 11/03/08
Thank you all for your kind words and positive thoughts!
Well, Eddie is one pissed off doggie! He looked at us when we walked in and immediately turned around and tried to leave with the nurse. She brought in a blanket so we could sit on the floor with him. The snubbing was immediately followed with a big pee on the floor and blanket. That's my Eddie! I just hope he doesn't think that is acceptable behavior when he comes home. Tomorrow!!! :-D He will be on lots of meds we are told.
I am thinking of having a Beef and Beer fundraiser. The current tab for my beloved doggie is $4,000. Ouch!!
izatryt at 6:24PM on 11/03/08
Holy pet insurance, Batman!
Um... aren't pets supposed to snub you after you've been in the hospital? Oh well. Those little quirks are why we love the critters so darn much.
