What's too far?
Last night my husband was late coming home for dinner. No big deal, I had made that no-knead bread, beef stew and a salad. Well, while wookie was waiting (sorry, I couldn't resist the alliteration), I got online here and saw this.
Today I saw that.
So, I google-mapped the distance to Melt. 5 hours and 10 minutes. A little further than I had hoped. But still considering the trip. Am I nuts? I could swing by IKEA on the way back. I could visit a friend in Cleveland if she's visiting her parents...or I could visit with her parents.
I was reminded of the many times in college that my friends and I would drive two hours in the middle of the night to go to Annandale, VA to eat Korean food.
So, Serious Eaters, are you really serious eaters? How far have you driven just for the food?

Never to far for a food craving.
Especially since us SE-ers live to eat!

@wookie ~ Go for it! Sounds like a delightful road trip. I believe the longest I have driven for food is my last road trip to Maine to gorge myself on Lobster. That was about 8.5 hours. And I would go back in a heartbeat!!

the linguist in me loved the alliteration:-)
I was reading your post with a huge smile on my face, because it's so nice to know I'm not the only one who can do crazy things like this! Hey, when I lived in Europe, I've been know to drive to other countries just for food:-) Several years ago, when I was visiting a friend who lives in Munich, we took a drive to Salzburg just for a slice of Apfelstrudel with vanilla sauce and a cup of coffee, from there we drove on to Venice for dinner - talk about crazy!

When my husband and I lived in South Carolina, there was a place 3 hours away in Tennessee that he loved. So we drove the 3 hours to go to the Apple Barn--mainly because he wanted the fritters.

Does flying count? We went from California to New York City to eat at Feldia's .... and it was worth it!

I'm seriously debating a day trip to SF to do some Japanese grocery shopping. I don't think it's too far if you consider it a mini vacation. If you want to do it, have the time, and have the $$ I don't think it's a problem.
I often drive about an hour to do shopping- I combine the trips with other things, but one of the things to do is shop.

i was visiting a friend in suburban DC and she wanted to have dinner in a restaurant in philadelphia, so we drove there. it took about three hours each way.

Thanks you guys. I have truly found my people...I want to hug all of you.
AND I have found some people who want to make the trek with me! All I had to do was show them the pictures...
@cmtigger--my girlfriend who used to live in PalmSprings would drive to Koreatown in LA just to get a ho-dduk, but then do some shopping in order to justify the trip.

Don't worry, it's not too crazy - at least to many of us. :) The farthest we've driven is from Cleveland, OH to Bristol, TN to get Sonic. Of course, we stayed overnight.
On a regular basis, we drive to Columbus that I've mentioned a couple times on SE to eat lunch at a particular restaurant and then drive right back.
Not sure I'd count flying from Cleveland to Honolulu each year. The 4-6 meals a day we eat at restaurants there, to catch all the great places I grew up with and the new ones that have sprouted, is a tasty by-product of visiting with friends and relatives. :P

yes if you make it a mini trip i say have fun and enjoy. i used to go a lot farther but with 2 toddlers i am not as willing. I am thinking of pretending i like my bil to get to go to a trader joes as the closest one is St Louis about 7 hrs away!(i have never been!) The wife is a sweetie so i think I can turn it into a trip! Have fun

@wookie- I think I get it from my parents, when we were little they used to pile the three of us in their little datsun and drive from Sacramento up to Volcano, CA just for dinner.
Nowdays gas is a bit more expensive, so I have to justify the trips more.

Oh, just thought I'd add- I've driven down to Southern CA on a whim before too. It's kind of nice to be able to do stuff sometimes just because you can.
