What to bring as thank yous at the Hershey Lodge
Next weekend Mr Tomato and I go to a conference at Hershey Lodge in waxy chocolate land. I know most of the people attending and wanted to bring a small token of love from my kitchen. Problem being all weekend we are going to be surrounded by chocolate. So if it were you what would you make. I need ideas. Something that does not clash or is more of the same.

Pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread? The pies can be scaled down to individual tart size, are seasonal and don't clash with chocolate.
This may be more of the same. Sorry. I've got a "Halloweenhead" and, yes, it's because I heard that Ryan Adams song recently.
Have fun at the lodge. :D

Are you thinking savory or sweet?
izatryt at 10:07AM on 10/12/08
A few things I love that complement chocolate:
Strawberries; Orange; Coffee; Bailey's
Easiest to bring would probably be mini-loaves or cupcakes. Cheesecake or mousse could be a problem with no refrigeration. Know anyone with an abundance of zucchini? I'd enjoy zucchini bread with coffee and a hunk of chocolate.
Let us know what you decide to bring. I know it will be fabulous and appreciated by the lucky recipients.

Well, the best wine to go with chocolate is from a native American grape called Norton. There are fine Nortons made in Virginia and, ahem, Missouri, where I am. But Nortons aren't cheap, especially the good ones. (Horton's Norton from Virginia, Stone Hill Norton from Missouri, for instance.) So not quite a stocking-stuffer. But delicious!

So everyone thinks that mini loaves would work. Easy to carry, easy to wrap. Pumpkin perhaps? OK my brain is churning.

Good port wine.

I love pumpkin bread (it's one of my specialties), but the first thought that popped into my head was banana bread mini loaves or muffins. Extremely compatible with all that chocolate, but still offers an alternative flavor profile... Also, doesn't have to be overly sweet, which might be nice.

Years ago I used to bring wine for people but today you never know who is AA. The days of bringing wine or spirits to a business function are over.
Also gettign 150 bottles of port is not going to be easy to transport or affordable. I did not say cheap I said affordable.
I am thinking cranberry orange, pumpkin, date nut and banana. Small loaves wrapped in cello and tied with ribbon. A nice box of those on the first day.
JerzeeTomato at 3:06PM on 10/12/08
Lovin' those selections, Jerz. Great for morning or late night snack. I've never made cranberry orange - sounds delicious. Care to share your recipe? I'm almost tasting it, spread with cream cheese. I prefer my sweets not too sweet. ;-D
150 - wow! Pretty ambitious. If you lived a little closer, I'd be glad to help. They'll never forget YOU. Have a great time. Can you believe I've never been there? Shame on me. I want a chocolate massage.
PerkyMac at 3:26PM on 10/12/08
@Perky - even I have been there:-). You should go!
@Jerzee - small loaves idea is brilliant, and the flavours sound really good! I'm with Perky - if I could, I would gladly help you with all that upcoming baking. Have fun!

spiced nuts in a little cellophane twisted up with a ribbon?
pooch at 3:59PM on 10/12/08
i' ve also been making little savory bread puddings that i bake in muffin pans, usually mushroom & sage with bleu cheese or tomato, basil and romano.... but these might need refrigeration since there's lots of eggs and milk in these.... but maybe nice for another time.

Peanut butter cookies? I'm not a fan, but lots of people like peanut butter with chocolate. Plus you could poke kisses in the middle of the cookies before they cool. They would be easy to transport, too.
buffy at 4:17PM on 10/12/08
Peanut butter bread! I've made this a couple times, and it's one of those "I need to write down the recipe" sort of things, but basically, I add peanut butter to my standard white bread dough. Maybe a half-cup per loaf. Could be more. I just eyeball it. But I've seen recipes online, so you could probably find something acceptable. It's not a sweet bread, so people who've overindulged in sweet chocolate might like it. And having a yeast bread along with the quickbreads might be a good option.
dbcurrie at 4:22PM on 10/12/08
ohh pb cookies from buffy sounds yummy. I love the mini loaves or cupcake size as you are gonna need to have something manageable while traveling. I went to Hershey last yr and you can completely overload on chocolate, you might even want more savory and less sweet. Have fun
love2cook at 5:04PM on 10/12/08
Holy crap, dbcurrie. That sounds freaking amazing. I'm so doing that!
BangieB at 6:51PM on 10/12/08
jerzee-you're going to be in my neighborhood! (ok, so I'm 20 mi west of Hershey, but anyway) I second the cran/orange, pumpkin, etc. Go for the NONchocolate route. It's easy to OD on chocolate when you're visiting Hershey. have a great time. FYI- if you get a chance to go out of the Lodge for breakfast-don't miss the Hershey Pantry (about 5 min down the road)-it consistently gets Best Breakfast kudos locally. TDF!

Popcorn.
foodvox at 8:37PM on 10/12/08
Go for the cranberry orange mini loaves. Sounds delicious. Both of those flavors seem to compliment chocolate! Yum!
barbara_flay at 9:10PM on 10/12/08
I vote for the pumpkin bread, something moist with pecans, sounds perfect with chocolate, and will bring antioxidants to the party!
SavoryTv at 9:32PM on 10/12/08
Oh! Love the popcorn idea. I'd do a chile-lime-popcorn thingamajig... a savory salty offset to the sweet chocolate, and chile goes well with chocolate anyway... MMMmmmmmmm....
LoCo at 10:03PM on 10/12/08
Godiva's Pumpkin Truffles make me think that pumpkin bread/muffins is a great idea for bringing to Hershey.
Zucchini bread might be nice too, people will be feeling indulgent enough (well, those who can palate Hershey's anyway...) so something that is vaguely nutritious would be well received.
