What do foodies do?

Now that we have foodie politics out of the way - what the heck do you guys do all day? I know there are some here and there who actually work in the food industry, but that hasn't seemed to be the norm. So besides loving food, what do you do?

179 Comments:

I work at a bank, and I am a artist!

I work in book publishing. Still at the entry level (sigh) but food porn makes the hours go by faster!

I work in Human Resources. But I'm in the nice side of HR -- benefits administration. :) I do food writing on the side, but it's not my main gig by any stretch of the imagination.

i work for IT corporate america. in a previous life, i worked in restaurants (both front and back of house).

I'm a retired pre-school teacher. Now I read, garden, spoil my 11 grands, cook Sunday dinners for up to nine assorted kids, grands and their boy/girl friends. And I entertain friends at least once a week. The only bad thing about 'empty nest syndrome' is not having anyone to cook for all the time : (

I do lunch, get my nails done, hug and kiss my dogs a lot, get pedicures, drink wine, hang out on SE, drink more wine, cook when I feel like it, drink more wine, run 5-6 mornings each week (before I drink wine).

Seriously, I am a Real Estate agent. These days, that gives me plenty of time to do the above. ;-D

I work in online advertising for a media company. And I have mysterious secondhand connections to S Eats!

Book publishing here, too! I mainly work on cookbooks so it's not all dullsville. 'Currently working on some great ones - will let you all know when they're about to come out!
Also a freelance writer. Have covered a few food things for TimeOut NY's web site.

I'm an Adult film star, specializing in threesomes with *little* people.

Little people are awesome -- you can stack them!

wow there are alot of interesting people here! i used to run the kitchen in a small coffee shop/bookstore. but am at the moment on a medical break so i spend most of my time either at dr's or sleeping. although SE is a mandatory stop of my day! ya'll make me laugh as well as giving me ideas about things i might like to try to make and eat.

@FFC ~ Did you take your medication today?

Paralegal at a law school. Mostly I bide my time and try to save money for my own law school education that I'm planning to begin within the next two years.

lol :-)

Actually, it's about that time.

Also worked many restaurant jobs before and during undergrad.

FFC - you are twisted - I think I love you!

I'm the food editor at a women's magazine (This one! Subscribe - you'll love it!), and my first cookbook is coming out next fall. (Yay!)

I'm in the legal industry. I sit in front of a computer all day long and all night long. Nothing exciting.

I work at a hospital.

I'm an interior designer and do property management of apartment buildings on the side. Seems like we all need a job side dish these days. :(

@CookiePie ~ Our guy FFC is looking for love...........

In my former career I was an archaeologist (I am still registered, but don't really do much with it here anymore), but at the moment I am a fraud agent with a huge CE company in the midwest, and am studying for a Master's degree in International Business, so basically, I don't sleep much.

I bake because I need the stress relief and a way of coping with boredom when I am not stressed (which is a rarity).

I am also on medical leave from my job, unfortunately, but when I'm not, I'm a chef at a small restaurant. I've been there for 20 years (since I was 16...eeek!) and have worked both front and back of house. I miss it terribly and can't wait until I can go back.

I am another in the legal way as well. Legal secretary.

I work in marketing research and am trying to save my money to go get a degree in food studies or something of the sort. I have only been in a 9-5 position for four months but it has already proven to me that i would much rather be doing something I am passionate about and of course that something is food.

I've had several former lives... most of my working years were spent in healthcare administration. Before that, I was in marketing and advertising. Before that I was a systems analyst. Before that, I worked my way through college as a legal secretary. And I've been a freelancer a time or three. Jill of all trades?

These days I'm a domestic chairman/CEO (aka homemaker). It's funny, because I never ever thought I'd be happy staying home, but... WOW! I can't figure out how anybody has time to work! Seriously, I've come to realize that every family that doesn't live with extended family, or employ a full-time staff (maid, gardener, nanny), should really try to find a way to have one person who stays home. It's not about traditional values or chauvinism or whatever. It doesn't matter whether it's mom or dad. It's simply amazing how much there really is to do. Managing a family's day-to-day life is easily a full-time job (not to mention overtime). It's the best scary thing I ever tried.

An added benefit? I'm not forced to do the all-day-Sunday cooking marathons that were necessary when I was a career mom. I thought I'd lost my love of cooking, but found out it was just something that had become a chore. Now I get to cook for fun, whenever I feel like it, and get as involved as I like! I've rediscovered my inner chef. Woo-hoo!

Oh. The washing machine just beeped, and I've got bills to pay, pots to stir, cars to take for servicing, carpool to run... guess I'll get my bass ack to work!
;-)

i work in PR for an agency, in the emerging media dep't

I'm in behavioral healthcare administration. I monitor prevention programs and manage information dissemination across an enormous geographical service area (~NY+NJ in square mileage). I also do PR related things and get to work with and learn about Tribal communities in our region, which has been fascinating so far.

I work at microsoft as a email migrations analyst. Basically I move email from one server to another.

I'm a banker. Biding my time until I can go back to school and get another entirely useless but fulfilling degree in English Lit. (next fall--can't wait!)

@pirateking you keep losing the email Bill Gates keeps sending me about the swiss bank account he opened and filled for me ;-)
@FFC I have to agree with others you are twisted! and like all the others i love it! (now give me back my bacon bra) ;-)
@LoCo you are so right! the house alone is full time then add in the family and overtime is stacking up! congrats on finding your inner chef again!

I thought about making up an impressive "job", but the participants on this site seem non-judgemental. So, anyway, I am an exotic dancer. I happen to adore great food and when a friend of mine told me about this site, I decided to give it a try. I am excited about what I have learned so far. There is a lot of knowledge here.

I'm the Director of Product Development for an interactive marketing agency. While I actually love my job, it would be great if I could have more time in my kitchen!

I fantasize about retiring in the next few years and making babies and cookbooks.

I'm a butcher in a grocery store in central Florida, head chef and bottle washer at home and am currently getting into making wedding cakes
@FFC....lmao....as soon as i read Adult Film Star I thought "this gotta be FFc"....lmao

www.mattthebutcher.com

I'm currently working as an assistant manager in a Mom and Pop New Orleans t-shirt store. Trying to expand my horizons (and my boyfriend's!) regarding food while I'm at work.

I'm a "little person" female adult film star. I'm also stacked.

@Perk ~ I just scared my doggies, again! Screaming laughing I am!!!!

i work for a non-profit doing research--but in an office full of hungry ladies, we always end up talking about food all day long! thank god the computer filter allows all this food porn.

I'm a soldier, whch has given me many opportunities to eat strange and wonderful dishes. I am also the main cook at home(when I'm there) and love to have my buddies over to have a nice homecooked meal.

Iwas a handbag and accessory merchandiser forthirty years. Taking a break now so I can spend endless hours doing things I love to do including reading this blog.

@nhfoodie ~ Thank you for your service to our country!

@nhfoodie......what izatryt said.

I'm Debbie and I am a 4th grade teacher in an inclusion class- we teach general ed and special ed kids.
Before that I was a full time mom and community volunteer and before that I worked in the food industry.

Some of you are so very witty! I had to wash my face to finish reading, I was laughing so hard. Mascara can sting.

I'm a paralegal for my husband's firm - boring, but hey, I get lunch with the boss. I'm also an unpublished author. Someday soon I hope.

I've done interior design, catering (still do both occasionally) and now sell on eBay and do recipe editing for a cooking website. All from the comfort of my home and laptop, so I can keep an eye out for tasty, witty posts like this one!

I'm a first year medical student, so I still have the time to cook and eat. I bake in response to stress, and it's a whole lot easier to make 20 new friends when you've made a recipe yielding 20 muffins.

stay at home mom of an 8 month old boy

I clerk at the DA's office and will graduate from law school this December.

I'm a part-time Occupational Therapist for a home care agency. Sometimes part of what I do involves teaching people how to cook for themselves again after a debilitating injury or illness (usually it's just the basics of dressing, bathing, and regaining strength, but the cooking part is always fun!). I'm also mom of a 5-year-old and two-month-old and spend as much time at home with all my boys as I can!

I work from home; used to have a computer store, but found out that there's better money in not selling anything and just doing repairs. So that's what I do.

I'm also editor of a local monthly newspaper, and write for them as well.

And I'm a freelance writer with one permanent client and I pick up other stuff as I have time and interest.

So...either I'm so busy I'm running around like a lunatic, or I've got a lull in everything and I can play for a while in the middle of the week. And working from home, even when I'm busy, I still usually have time to babysit a loaf of bread or something else that just needs occasional attention.

Downside of working from home is that when I'm crazy busy, I might still be working at midnight.

I'm a stay-at-home mom to a beautiful 22 month-old little girl. I also do a bit of selling on eBay and run my own little baking business.

I'm in the film industry... I actually stack the little people for the on screen talent in the porn industry. No but seriously... I just help stack them... I haven't received my head stacker certificate as of yet. I am a senior estimator for a GC. I live in Bama but work mostly in the Northeastern U.S. Born and raised in NH so to NHFOODIE I say thanks for your service, and shout back at me as I will be back in NH next week and we can swap good eat spots.

i do class 3 soldering for the military and medical and cna work when i get tired of that. i am going into nursing with interest in children and diabetes. and i cook anything and everything.

@Pavlov ~ I am not too bright. What is a GC?

@All ~ I need a new career. You guys are extraordinary. Well, everyone except, well, never mind.

I work in the accounting department of a restaurant group. Prior to this I managed restaurants and went to school for hospitality management. Current job is way better - I get actual weekends, holidays, and vacations. :)

@Pavlov ~ no salivating dogs???

I am a former college dropout and current freelance writer. That means I'm broke, stay up until all hours of the night and like whiskey just a tad bit more than a twenty-three-year old girl should.

sorry folks... GC= General Contractor

I do a good.... oooohhh..... 5-6 months of solid work every year. Aside from that I am working slowly on my culinary arts degree (which I will never use in the industry) I travel a lot, and cook even more.

@izatryt ~ I think GC stands for General Contractor? Is Bama - Alabama or some new island discovered by Barak? Inquiring minds.....oh, never mind.

@Perky & Pavlov ~ Thanks for that. ;-P I'll be okay as soon as my meds kick in! When I think estimator, I think collision repair. Guess that is because I just had one! A collision that is, not the estimator.

Right now I'm pretty much starting over .. I moved cross country to Vermont and am currently being a nanny to a very busy almost 3 year old while looking for other fulltime work.. .before that (for the past 9 years) I was in computer productive development, quality assurance and help desk area.

I'm a gynecologist....
Really, I am. This isn't another pornographic comment.

I'm an office manager at a software company, but what I really want to do is go to culinary school or get an advanced degree in writing.

Chin up @izatryt... There are plenty of estimators to be had out there. Make sure your velveeta pushing hubby isn't around first!

@ Alm25 where in VT? I know a few nice restaurants i would highly advise visiting.

Retired from selling real estate for 22 years...retired just in time...Relocated from Miami to Albuquerque (our daughter & son-in law are here). Love the weather and have plenty of time to cook for my husband, daughter and Friars who run a local soup kitchen. Always have time to check in on SE. Fortunately, husband does the dishes!

another occupational therapist here. pediatrics. also part time. the rest of the time i am a manual therapist and teach the alexander technique.

@peanut butter, i don't mind a bit that you are a gynecologist. given your screen name, i'm just exceedingly grateful that you didn't say you were a proctologist.

Ah yes Pavlov ~ I now refer to him as my Aqua Velveeta Man Toy.

Finance (stock & bond). Cooking is the ultimate distraction - though everyone wants to know the next time I'm bringing food for the office. If things keep going like they have been in the day job I may have to fall back on the hobby.

Nothing terribly exciting here. I've been through several incarnations as well. I have a degree in linguistics and another one in economics and international business management. I have taught English to foreigners, I've worked at a very large bank, I've been a translator (I happen to know a couple of other languages), and now I work from home, as an auditor (so I spend a lot of time in front of my computer), which leaves me plenty of time for my true passion - cooking, and for this I'm truly grateful.

33 years working in, managing, owning...and well, selling and managing again an automotive parts store. I'm also an ordained Roman Catholic Deacon, (thus the screen name) who would love to find the cajones to finally open up that little pizza DelCo in his little town.

I am a stay at home mom with an autistic son and a stubborn daughter:) I am starting a delivery cookie business and dream of working in a "real" bakery. My other dream is to be a criminal pathologist and i have a crush on quincy. That is an old tv show in case there are young'ns here. I love se and check it often in the day i find the craziness wonderful!!!!!

I'm on a year's maternity leave right now (yup, Canadian), and supposed to be heading back to work in February.

I've been working in the picture framing for the past 12 years (framer, textile and conservation specialist, admin assistant, office manager and customer service trainer for a wholesale frame manufacturer), but am hoping to put my BFA in Creative Writing to use and try some freelancing so I can stay at home with my little boy.

I'm a CPA in the Midwest - it's more interesting than it sounds :)

Right now, I look for jobs. =P When I am employed, however, I'm a web geek.

@pavlov - I'm in Ludlow, SE of Rutland... I would love any reccomendations... have been exploring the southern part of the state this summer... can't wait to head up north and look around.

I'm a full-time student pursuing my BA in English, and I work part-time in a coffee shop and bookstore(and maybe after tommorow, in a bar, too!). my non-foodie hobbies include playing and customizing guitars, knitting, writing and photography.

I'm a student pursuing my AA in Liberal Arts until I figure out how to incorporate all of my loves into a BA; and I work one day a week for a high end jewelry designer. I also spend probably way too much time thinking about food. My bf is constantly telling me that everything isn't always about food, while I think it is.

I write for a business. Sometimes I write about food, other days its tires, immigration law or sex aides.

I'm an executive assistant. That's what you get with a degree in Anthropology. I love my job! I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

I write all the content for the website of one of the world's most famous toy stores. Product descriptions, ecommerce trash etc. That's what you get with a degree in arts, journalism and film... I've also worked in a lotta restaurants

My professional life started in restaurants-I've waitressed, bartended, and managed in lots of different types of eating and drinking establishments. My favorite job was tending bar at a club that booked some fairly major bands. I was always assigned to the VIP bar on concert nights and got to meet a ton of very interesting people. I somehow ended up as a healthcare IT business analyst for a major teaching hospital in the midwest.

I'm a freelance food editor, mostly for cookbooks and websites. And I love it when Serious Eaters tear into poorly written and edited cookbooks. Seriously.

I am a technical writer - I run my own business from home. Been doing that for about 20 years give or take. I've done some other obscure high techy-type jobs too over the years, but I always come back to writing. Someday I'd like to put my writing skills together with my cooking love and make something happen there!

Volunteer exhibit planner at a small historic house museum...but hoping to be an *employed* history museum professional soon!

I have two jobs. I'm a graphic designer for local news and I'm an assistant parts manager at a Harley-Davidson shop. I also have a beautiful almost three month old daughter.

i do middays on a rock station in columbus. radio is all i've ever worked in since my freshman year of college, although i was a record exec for awhile too after graduation.

i am an officer manager for a private equity firm , basically sit in front of a computer all day. luckily this allows me to read all the food blogs i want...as long as no one catches me. if i knew how to focus my passion for food and restaurants into a career i would. still trying to figure that part out.

@FFC: LMAO...I just wish I didn't have such a vivid imagination...

@nhfoodie: I want to say thank you for all your hard work and service to our country. It's truly a wonderful thing that you do.

@Brooke: Hi sister!! :D

Currently I am a full time college student earning a Master's of Management Degree (only 10 months to go!!), a part time mom to my friends' daughter, and full time employee. I have been in the finance industry for ten years. I started as a teller and now I work on projects and assisting clients with their computer problems.

So, I am busy!!! Which is why I haven't been on here as much as I would like. Unfortunately, cooking falls into that category as well. :(

Next up-I want to become fluent in another language...

I'm a 20-something, working in the fundraising department at a higher ed institution in Boston...and as much as I love my job, I wish that I could be in my kitchen experimenting all day instead. :-)

I work for a major financial institution managing projects for the credit card division. I also have a home-based fabric sales business on ebay and I'd much rather be home quilting and baking than doing my day job most days. But, quilting and baking don't pay the bills for now.

I'm an environmental engineer and an aspiring cookbook author. I would gradually like to adjust that statement to cookbook author and part time environmental consultant. Maybe eventually open/buy a local restaurant or two.

I have a degree in economics and became an accountant in the TV business. I've taken some boot camp training at the CIA in New Hyde Park and I'm very inspired by all of you and intrigued by everybody's different backgrounds. It's fantastic.

I'm a graphic designer at a nutraceutical company. I particularly specialize in Canadian compliance labelling for foods and web/flash development.

I blog SE while waiting...

@Butrflygirly - hi sister, I've missed seeing you around! Btw, what language are you planning to become fluent in?:-)

@FFC - hehe people in my office must wonder why I giggle while I type...everyday...reading your posts LOL;

keep up the eccentric slants--they're character builders and extremely entertaininig!

@Brooke: I miss you and being here as well!! I've been so busy lately I don't know what day it is. :( I would like to become fluent in Spanish first (for business reasons) which shouldn't be hard since I have taken so much of it. But, I would also like to learn Italian. My mom's family is from Italy and I spoke broken Italian when little but that was the last time I spoke the language.

I used to be a Fundraiser/Grantwriter for a private school in New England, now I am a stay-at-home mom to my adorable little 6 year old twin girls and my sweet little 10 month old baby boy, living in the South.

I am a legal secretary, mom of two beautiful kids, and someday I'd love to pursue my dream of going to culinary school and becoming a private chef.

@Butrflygirly - these are the next two languages on my list as well! Hey, maybe a year from now we'll be exchanging posts in Spanish or Italian here.

Years ago, I've spent days studying with my Italian friend for our economics exams. She spoke mostly Italian to her husband and two small children, and I've become very good at understanding Italian (and making bolognese:-)), if not speaking.

I'm a navy sailor and learned everything I know about cooking from my mom, grandma and food tv! Also studying business part time.
I think feeding people is one of the greatest things there is - better than cooking even!

boil cute furry animals

haha @ foodinmouth! Does that mean you cook?

I also sautee, braise, grill, and filet adorable fuzzy creatures as well!

I'm in marketing for a restaurant supply company and do food blogging on the side.

I'm a senior in college and heading towards a career in international development / public health.

@Brooke:Sounds good to me! Once I get my master's, I am going to do things I want to do. No more going to classes and doing homework-unless of course I find classes where the language is taught. If not, I think I may have to get the Rosetta Stone!

I get my bone on.

I am a fundraiser for an agency that provides services to adults with disabilities.

graduate student. MSW spring '09.

Civil/Mechanical Engineer. I build bridges during the week and cook on the weekends!

Gardener on private estates.

Machinist. Thinking about food and cooking gets me through the more boring parts of my job.

I used to make a good living in film and television postproduction. Now I sell produce for a meager wage, but on the upside I've lost the urge to kill.

I often daydream about opening my own little luncheonette.

I'm a marketing and communications director for a small consulting firm, after spending more than 15 years in various NYC not for profits. But I'm anticipating a career change within the year: rabbinical school.

Florida State University student. Classical guitar performance.

I practice law in the Midwest, but I would like to break into food writing and/or culinary instruction for a retirement career. I covet Jane and Michael Stern's job!

Illustrator, designer, writer, blogger and eater...

Mostly the eater.

Medical student, which means my food choices alternate between grilled salmon and fresh produce (no test coming up), coffee, saltines, and canned E-Z cheese (pre-test), and copious alcohol consumption (post-test). I like the variety. Serious Eats satisfies me whichever food mood I am in.

marketing for a non profit company. kind of boring but there are nice resteraunts where I work!

If anyone cares, or is reading my comment.......

I am an antiques appraiser and have an antiques shop in New Jersey!
But love to cook and blog about it!

Am a dependent's pass holder, and hence not legally allowed to work. To say I have time to spare is an understatement - obviously. But one mustn't moan. ;-)
Thanks to these terribly intellectual discussions on SE I can confirm my brain cells are dying at a slower rate. Many thanks.

Paralegal with a secret desire to be a beekeeper.

I MAKE PIZZA

Bunch of weirdos.

:-)

Mostly I do what iza said. I do lunch, and shop, hug and kiss my dogs a lot, get pedicures, get my hair done, drink wine, hang out on SE, lurk around the baking blogs, shop, cook when I feel like it, bake when I feel like it, go on road trips, more shopping. I sold my business over 2 years ago. I am taking a Photoshop class right now. Just living my life and enjoying it. My sole job is the care of Mr Tomato. Then my time is mine.

I'm a mid-level bureaucrat--in my spare time (when I'm not recipe/grocery browsing or testing), I'm working on an MBA.

I manage a Trader Joe's!

I'm a stay-at-home mom to our 4 kids ages 6,5,3 and 2. I also take care of my 3 month old nephew 5 days a week. Other then that I'm a pop culture junkie. Any spare time I have is spent watching movies and tv with the hubby or talking about movies and tv. We also love to spend our weekends together in the kitchen trying new recipes that I gather throughout the week.

@JerzeeTomato -- you are living my dream life!!!! How do I get on THAT train?

I currently work in a corporate law firm doing conflicts of interest checks and docketing (a fancy word for maintaining a scheduling database). It's boring, dull work but hopefully, next year I'll be attending culinary school and working part-time at a bakery...cross your fingers!

@Stacey Snacks - That's always been my dream! My sister and I always said when we retire we're going to open an antique/used book/cafe-bakery/florist shop. Jealous!

I'm finishing my PhD in Anthropology...because I thought being in Grade 25 would be fun...for some reason.

I do love it, and love that I work at home, so I can wander into the kitchen and slice garlic and prep dinner while my brain works through a thought.

I work in consulting at a big 4 firm, occasionally blog. but always gone and always busy.

i spend most of my time wishing i had time to cook everything on this site. and then eat it.

Full time Paramedic, part time caterer/cooking instructor.

@fcc...yes...we are weirdos...and you are our king! ;-)
I'm just hoping 5' is too tall to be a little person...

I'm currently an a/p processor, although in past lives I was a short order cook, restaurant manager, and customs broker.
In a future life I'd like to have huneybumper's job! My sister & I often talk about opening a bookstore/cafe.

I must add, how incredible a force food is....how many other boards would find such a diverse group of people posting harmoniously (for the most part)....

I'm on my year off before graduate school. Right now I'm working as a serious lab bitch.
After 5pm I am a baking machine and furry animal lover.

So many different lives! Amazing! I work in a nursing home as the dietary manager - try to please 80 people per day per meal!! Before that, I managed restaurants, cooked at Rainforest Cafe, owned my own catering business and I apprenticed as a pastry chef when I was in my teens. It's been a long life!!

I'm a High School senior right now.
I guess that makes me one of the young kids in here, but... dammit. I love food, and this place satisfies my food-lust ;) Also I'm doing my parents a favor and cooking my own food using some SE recipes so I don't have to depend on take out/easy mac when they're not home

I'm retired from the meeting and convention service industry, currently working as a part time musician (bass fiddle).

I'm a makeup artist in New York, and baker for my friend's birthdays, and the one who brings way too many dishes for the potlucks and gatherings :)

I heart Trader Joes! cornellfoodie, I am jealous!

I am working on my doctorate in public policy...I study public management. This is about the time most eyes being to glaze over but I love it!

I manage a team of content editors for a customer service website.

I'm a concierge for a major hotel in NYC

I work at home for a small construction company: scheduling, billing, taxes. And I garden, take my granddaughters on the weekend, cook for fun, cook frozen "care packages" and breads for my brother who has health problems.

I am a page at NBC in Los Angeles, currently working on the Universal Lot. I hope to get a job at NBC because I ~*love*~ it there! I'm most interested in producing for television or music supervision/licensing for television. I have always loved food--one of my friends remembers that I was always more interested in asking her about what she had for dinner the previous night instead of what she actually did the previous night. I enjoy cooking but I adore baking.

sales mgr at a wine wholesaler.

I'm getting my PhD in cellular and molecular biology, aka I do cancer research. I spend a lot of time in the lab and when I'm not there, I'm cooking for my boyfriend who is also getting a degree in cancer research. I'd probably have my degree and the cure for cancer by now if I wasn't so distracted by all my food blogs. Sigh. Torn by my two loves.

Layout Editor/Food Blogger for a paper

Worked my way through college as a restaurant service supervisor, have a BA in Professional Writing and Secondary Education. Taught high school English, and got out before the little bastards could kill me. Worked for a major electrical corporation for 20 years writing and directing video training programs on electrical repair (Zzzzz). Also managed the marketing for the technical training dept. Had to leave for health issues, so I started a cookie-baking business out of my home. Too big of a commitment, so I now have joined the pedicure-getting, lunch-eating, wine-drinking SE contingency while feeding my ever-hungry teenager and husband.

I'm a newspaper reporter. But the closest I get to the food section is taste-testing the recipes they whip every week. (I do bake for the office, though.)

i have an aa in liberal arts and am working on ba in international business, minor in spanish(hopefully). i have to admit, its very hard to concentrate on business school when cooking consumes every thought, but i'll live, only 5 semsters to go!!! then all of my thoughts will be consumed by food while im at work getting paid! i love this site, its makes me laugh, alot!!

I am a full time grad student in NY who recently quit my job...I spend most of my free time (the little I have, believe it or not) in sites like SE, Eater, and the like...

@Josdean ~ We are most pleased to have you in our contingency!!

I own a Personal Chef and Private Catering business.... after having spent 25 years in corporate America in the marketing field.

Due to medical issues I am a part of the shopping, manicure-getting, lunching crowd (not wine drinking due to the afore mentioned issues). I also spend alot of time at my various doctors offices and sleeping. When not doing those things I cook alot for Mr. Panda and the ever STARVING teenage Panda son!!!

I'm an airline ground agent - I work at the ticket counter, lost luggage office and work at the gate.

I also wait tables at a Japanese restaurant.

And because all only pays the bills, I teach a rowing class twice a week for shopping money.

Right now I'm not workin' and not lookin'. We'll be relocating soon to Atlanta and I plan to open an as yet undetermined food-related business there. (Which I promise will not be a sit-down restaurant.) We're gaining lots of contacts in the restaurant scene in Atlanta and I'm hoping this will assist me in my efforts.

I've worked in the past as an executive assistant and in professional kitchens. Even when I worked in offices, I always got my feelgoods in the foodie world by catering or baking for restaurants; not to mention throwing big parties for birthdays and other significant days. I also had a gourmet group which was nice because there were six other maniacs like me quelling the cooking jones.

@gastronomeg - all i did for 5 years after college was DJ for a rock station in Toledo!!! I ran a station in college, got an internship, and that internship turned into a job. I also was asst. production director for the Cumulus cluster in T-town for a few years...

UNTIL, i decided to leave it behind and get back to culinary school. Now i'm a pastry cook at a restaurant in Manhattan. See, some foodies actually break down and immerse themselves in it from all sides!!!

I'm an IT professional, used to be a programmer, now project manager. But all I really do is think of food all day, plan dinner, and my blog. I live for the day I escape the industry and work in a kitchen!

Sssh... don't tell anyone ;)

Government worker with web design and event planning on the side.

I'm a Legal assistant in a Personal Injury law firm.. I'm always planning and thinking about food though.. I want to get into catering eventually... I miss working in the kitchen, but you probably won't see me working in a restaurant kitchen again anytime soon.

I write news blurbs for a web site a couple of days a week. I say I'm a freelancer, which allows me to think that I have a "real" job, when the bulk of my time is taken up with my two girls and hubby. I also cook for everyone in sight!

editor at a technology research company

@Dee - I would love to know how you got into freelance food editing...

I have a day job working for an online food magainze and do this - www.gastrogirls.com - whenever i can - you know, between wishing i wasn't here and dreaming of food, fame and fortune.

heee!

Left work as NYC real estate lobbyist to spend life savings on cooking school. Loved apprenticeship in Mendocino but not job in SoCal. Broke my finger going from an interview 2nd day working at hotel scraping old cheese off French onion soup bowls so became non-profit consultant!

I teach cooking when I can and cook for my husband and feed my dog but do not cook for her. My mother just died so I'd like to gather her recipes together with photos and stories and write a book.

I have been doing customer service for about 4 years in the cell phone industry. I work for the evil empire, see the death star logo on our phones.

Before that I was working in Radio and TV, as cameraman and board op. I am a life long media guy, doing photography, videography/film, running sound for the different churches I have belonged to. My degree is in photo journalism.

However I have only been cooking for about 4 years. I was lucky enough to marry an italian girl from NJ. (I'm from OK) She makes the best food of anybody I know, except for some reciepes I make. She is the cook here. I make special dishes, she does the everyday stuff and rocks at it.

Anyway I took up food as a hobby thinking if you're going to have a hobby this is a practical one. Unfortunately it has ruined so much food I used to eat. Amazing how blissfully ignorant you can be about the food you eat until you learn how to make good food.

To all those who blog here and read this and are current or former military, Thank you for your service. You understand better than many how expensive a dish freedom is to serve to our children. Thank You.

I was a photographer in a past life (early 20s) then became a non-profit administrator (in my 30s) and now am back to doing what I REALLY love--photography again (this time making a living at it) which is my passion (well, that and FOOD!).

I'm the guy that pilots the blimp at large events !

Interior designer...residential and commerical....who would like to get started on putting together a family recipe book soon.

In the past, I've always worked in either the entertainment industry (musician) or in Sales. I am now the happy owner of a small little catering company in Nashville. I only work smaller events because I want to keep it focused more on quality and fun. I don't want to turn my love of food into a chore!!

@shipwreck ~ Way Cool!!! Get I get a ride on one????

My wife and I are retired; we fly fish six months and hang out in Tucson for the other six. We take three mags; Saveur, Flyfishing, and The Economist. We cook mostly Indian/ Asian as we worked in Asian rainforests for 30 years.

Children's television... Wishing I could work on a food-related show for kids...

On a medical benefit, voluntary work in the community and occasionally looking for paid employment... "boring" stuff compared to some of you guys! (@ you FastFoodCritic! ;-) )

Editor -- professional dev. books for educators. But I'd love to work on food or design books...any offers?

I sizzle, chop and saute for 10 hours a day as head chef for one of Australias most well known celebrity chefs- Bill Granger, in his iconic Sydney restaurant Bills.

I am a retired restaurant owner. I was forced to retire because the state purchased one property for the Tollway Authority headquarters, and then another authority bought my other restaurant for construction of a railroad overpass. Since I miss the food business so much, I just put in an 800 sq. ft. kitchen, and cook, eat, and drink all the time with friends and family.
