The Hunt for Blue Pumpkins

Every year I hunt for the elusive Blue Pumpkin. I feel liek Charlie Brown trying to find the Great pumpkin. I got to have one. Today my hunt was squashless. Only white. Have you found one?

One pill makes you larger, one pill makes you small...........Go ask Alice.....

No offense Jerzee, just me being me tonight. GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!

call around and ask if they have the blue hubbard or a blue ballet squash, it'll probably be in an heirloom mix. try some of the upscale country gift stores. the heirloom pumpkins are a pain to grow, and sometimes the seed is hard to get, so a lot of farmers just don't bother with them anymore.

Manhattan Fruit Exchange has some in the Chelsea Market! Love that place!

....when she's ten feet tall?

Amazing! I didn't know such a thing existed. Did you know you can make pumpkins into a drink? ...

ROFLMAO! Owly ~ I laugh a lot reading SE, but indeed my food knowledge DOES keep expanding! The only round blue thing from nature I am familiar with is the occasional blue moon. Which, as proper form dictates, we stand outside, look up, and howl.

(disclaimer) There may have been a fine distilled beverage consumed.

I've found blue ballet squash at Central Market in Houston before (years ago, haven't seen any this year). I remember this because I was sent off on the search the day before Thanksgiving because my grandmother had a recipe that specifically called for one. I also remember because it was about $9! It was mashed into oblivion for the recipe, but I don't remember anything exceptional about the flavor- pretty typically squashy.

New to me Jerzee. All I could picture was the blue soup in Bridget Jones Diary. Still one of my all time favorite food scenes in a movie. What color is the flesh? Really hoping it's turquoise blue. ;)

They have blue hubbards at the Union Square Greenmarket, if you're in the NYC area. If not, try your friendly local farmstand. Their flesh is a golden orange, like most other winter squash.

This is not a cartoon. Blue pumpkins exist tomorrow I head out in search of one again. Send all your blue pumpkin vibes my way. I pray the pumpkin gods are with me. If you are out and see a insane woman asking for the blue pumpkins it is me.

I actually did not know that they existed! I have white ones that my hubby is going to airbrush that beautiful Martha Stewart blue. He usually airbrushes orange ones into aliens or skulls but I figured it would be easier w/ white.

Good luck in your hunt Jerzee. :)
ps It's Linus that's waiting for the great pumpkin, not Charlie Brown. Cheers!

Update Tues-
Went to 3 pumpkin farms. Saw green white and striped. Bought apples and no BLUE!!!
Tomorrow we hit some more farms.
Blue pumpkins where are you?
About Linus oops.

Wed-
Blue pumpkin FOUND.
I am in awe if it. God loves the color blue today.

Glad to hear that the pumpkin gods were smiling upon you today.

Out of curiosity, which variety were you able to find? Last year I also made it a personal quest to locate blue pumpkins (or any variety of blue winter squash), and was finally able to find the blue hubbard as well as the blue ballet. Of course, I then expressed my thanks to the pumpkin/squash gods by cooking and eating said squashes.

Still on the lookout for the elusive Queensland Blue, however... and so the quest continues this year...

Where did you find it?

Some small farm stand in Delaware. It is a hubbard blue.
Now what to do with it?

Jerzee went on a safari and hunted down the elusive blue pumpkin. Congrats on finding your prey!

How about a before and after photo Jerzee? I still have my fingers crossed for turquoise soup. ;)

I know that this is a bit after the fact, however, in Arkansas and southwest Missouri, you can find blue, pink and white pumpkins at almost every stand! I have one of each on my porch for three pumpkin soup! The trick to this soup is the Arkansas Black apple. It originated here in the ozarks and has the BEST apple flavor in the world!
