Low Calorie Granola?

Hello, I've been looking around for a really good tasting granola that isn't too high in calories. Any ideas? Thanks!

This is my favorite low cal granola - from Cooking Light

Power Granola
Serving Size : 9

2 cups regular oats
1/3 cup ground flaxseed
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup chopped slivered almonds
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/3 cup orange juice
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons canola oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
cooking spray
1/3 cup dried cranberries

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Combine first 5 ingredients in a medium bowl.

Combine orange juice, honey and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat just until sugar dissolves, stirring frequently. Remove from heat; stir in oil and vanilla.

Pour honey mixture over oat mixture, stirring to coat. Spread mixture in a thin layer onto a jelly-roll pan coated with cooking spray. Bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes; stir well. Bake an additional 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Spoon granola into a bowl; stir in dried cranberries. Cool completely.

Note: Store completely cooled granola in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Serving size = 1/2 cup

I like the Bear Naked brand of granola. They have a bunch of different flavors to choose from, some lower in fat in sugar and calories, some with nuts (healthy fats). All are tasty, plain or mixed with yogurt. I haven't tried it with milk, though I'm sure it would be great!

I second the Bear Naked recommendation. I have the extremely tasty chocolate flavor in my office now and it has 3.5 grams of fat per 1/4 cup serving. The "low fat" vanilla flavor is even lower in fat.

don't know if you have one near you, but trader joe's has really good low-fat granolas. i think there's vanillla almond and berry - berry's my favorite.

Whole Foods has this delicious Pumpkin Flax Granola in the bulk section that is 140 calories/.5 cup. It's really, really good.

I don't want to harp on about nutrition, but the most dangerous part about (some) granola is the sugar content. This is why I wouldn't recommend Trader Joe's brand... but those who suggested Bear Naked -- YES! Really good and good for you. Spend the extra few bucks and your body will thank you.

google "orangette consider it" for the granola recipe I use. I have yet to put the effort into looking up calorie counts on pretty much anything I make, but as @twentyolives said, I think what makes granola potentiall un-healthy is all the sugar and extra stuff in store-bought granola. So make your own - it's really good and all your friends will call you a hippy ...

I just posted a sugar-free granola recipe on my site, if you're interested. It uses agave nectar and powdered fructose in place of the sugar.

but agave nectar has the same calories as honey, so it's not low calorie, just low glycemic.

i make my own granola and i am here to tell you that it is not necessary to use a single drop of oil in it. just toast it really brown, use a mix of flakes {l like barley, kamut, and spelt in addition to oats} turning it every 15 minutes, and it will be plenty tasty. i use grade b maple syrup since it's stronger tasting. {if you use coconut flakes, add them halfway through, or they'll get incinerated. ask me how i know.}

also, after it's cooled, i mix in a lot of freeze dried mango and raspberries, which add tons of crunch, volume and flavor, but very few calories. {but i wouldn't mix freeze dried with regular dried fruit, or it will turn soggy and nasty.}

cybercita - you're right that agave nectar and honey have (roughly) the same number of calories. However, many people find that low glycemic products (like agave nectar) don't result in hunger spikes, and so help them keep their overall calorie intake down. YMMV, of course.

Thank you for all of your wonderful suggestions. I will try most of them and will definitely check out Bare Naked Granola!
