Ingredient issues
Just reading nightowl's post about liking peanuts and peanut butter, but then hating peanut butter cookies. Any similar afflictions?
For me, it's raisins. Love them on their own, in cookies, bread, oatmeal, etc. But I CAN'T STAND them in cold cereal. I couldn't eat a bowl of Raisin Bran if you held a gun to my head.
Anyone else?

raisins can go to hell...and take mushrooms with them.
but along the lines of your actual question... I hate tomatoes on their face, but like (some) tomato sauces, ketchup, and other tomato related products.
Southern_bella at 4:29PM on 10/29/08
I used to hate raw tomatoes.... now, I can eat them, but only liberally salted. Let's see, what else? I don't like onions, but I love the oniony flavor it adds to dishes. I don't like peanuts in my candy bars. I love to eat lemons, but don't like drinks with lemon in them (except lemonade).
nightowl at 4:42PM on 10/29/08
I love lemons and lemon in anything savory. I cannot stomach lemon in anything sweet. I even like lemon in alcoholic beverages. I can't stand lemon bars, lemon curd, lemon cake etc.
lakeloverhh at 4:43PM on 10/29/08
I also like peanuts and peanut butter, but can not stand peanut butter cookies.
izatryt at 4:51PM on 10/29/08
I thought I was the sole person with this affliction! I've got lots of these!!
I agree with tomatoes. I'm picky about raw tomatoes Sometimes, they work with the sandwich, sometimes they don't. And forget about putting them into a salad. Spinach is good in salad, also in things like Lasagna and Spanakopitas, but horrible as creamed or sauteed in a slimy pile on the side of my plate. I love an ahi tuna steak, but can't stand tuna salad. Also very funny about vinegar. It's ok to put in most things, and I love vinaigrettes but cannot stand anything that has been pickled in vinegar. oh that reminds me of cabbage, another one, good on mexican food, but I hate cole slaw or saurkraut. Which leads me to mayonnaise which really is only ok in moderation. Spread on your sandwich fine, to make a BBQ side salad (egg, potato etc), not so much. (which explains my dislike of tuna salad and cole slaw).
oh, and my bf had one that I really didn't see coming. He LOVES seafood. Shrimp and shellfish are good in all forms. He also likes soups. But he hates fish stew, or any form of it. No fish and broth combination (but shellfish are ok with broth). I was very disappointed when I made a thai tom yom soup with tilapia that I was sure he'd love only to have him put the dish aside and toast some pop tarts for dinner. (to be fair, he was nice about it, and eats most of my cooking, no matter how crazy it gets.)

I like peanuts, don't like peanut butter, but do like peanut butter mousse or cheesecake as well as white chocolate Reese's peanut butter cups.
brooke29 at 5:03PM on 10/29/08
I don't like raw tomatoes, but I love tomato sauce. I also love onion flavor, but I can't eat actual onions...it's a texture thing.
fatitalianbroad at 5:10PM on 10/29/08
Oh, and I actually love raw tomatoes but absolutely can't eat cooked tomatoes, unless they are blended into a sauce or a soup (no cooked tomato chunks for me, please).
brooke29 at 5:17PM on 10/29/08
I don't like raw tomatoes either, but love tomato sauce, etc. I love peanut butter but not with chocolate (I know, scandelous).
Laurel E at 5:36PM on 10/29/08
Haha, I feel so grown up knowing that I used to have a bunch of these finicky problems. But I do have to agree with blankplate -- I can't stand cooked spinach. Raw, on a sandwich, in a salad, it's fine, but not cooked and limp on the plate. Eesh.
kfarrel3 at 5:52PM on 10/29/08
I like peanut butter cookies, don't mind peanut butter, don't care for peanuts...all nuts in their whole form for that matter. I don't hate them, but I do avoid them. I do like walnuts in cookies.
Celery. I HATE them in salads, but I eat celery sticks and will crave them on occasion.
I hate most cheeses (diarrhea doesn't help), but enjoy spanakopita once in a while.
I hate spinach, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower raw, but love them steamed.
Cassaendra at 6:09PM on 10/29/08
I'm another on the peanut issue: I can't stand peanuts in desserts or sweet or savory sauces, but I love peanuts and eat peanut butter (unsweetened natural kind) all the time.
Also: I love coconut in desserts or on its own, but I loathe coconut/coconut milk in savory dishes like curries.
producestories at 7:29PM on 10/29/08
I have many of these, but the first that come to mind is that I don't like oranges but ate marmalade on toast as long as I can remember. Don't like white chocolate, but will eat it in good white chocolate macademia nut cookies. Don't like milk chocolate, but will eat it if it comes with peanut butter attached on occasion.
HeartofGlass at 7:37PM on 10/29/08
oh nightowl, good choice with lemons, I love lemons and lemonade, but do not ever put lemon in my water.
Southern_bella at 7:52PM on 10/29/08
I hate bananas but like banana bread and chocolate covered frozen bananas, I love Reese's Peanut Butter cups but hate peanut butter, I love oranges but abhor marmalade.
deefine at 8:40PM on 10/29/08
I love fruit raw but hate almost all of it cooked! I can tolerate grilled pineapple because it doesn't lose its texture, and anything that's pureed in a baked good or something is fine, but mushy cooked fruit makes me gag.
Same goes for dried fruit - it's fine on its own, but cooked into anything it goes all bloated and gross.
Most of my food issues are texture related except for the taste of olives (love olive oil; why?) and licorice (can tolerate some fennel seed in, for example, sausage).
wellred at 8:51PM on 10/29/08
Ditto on the cooked tomatoes. It's gotta be a smooth tomato sauce, or I can hardly choke it down. And onions that are slightly cooked, but still have a crunch? *shudder*
I have a theory that people with strong food aversions often get involved in cooking so they know their food is "safe." Ya think?
Kiwords at 9:46PM on 10/29/08
I don't like most pickled foods, except for some crunchy pickles, of course.
PerkyMac at 9:53PM on 10/29/08
I love black olives but can't tolerate green ones. I have "issues" with mayonnaise in salads but not sandwiches, and can't have milk in hot drinks (tea or coffee) but milk in hot chocolate is fine.
PeanutButter at 10:01PM on 10/29/08
I like tomatoes in a salad or eaten out of hand with plenty of salt, but can't stand them on a sandwich with meat, like roast beef, pork, turkey or on a hamburger.
it's wierd. cause i just adore a tomato and cheese sandwich, or even a grilled tomato and cheese, or even a BLT. go figure.
nightmoon at 11:05PM on 10/29/08
I've had a lifelong issue with mayonaise. It's the whole package--the smell, the texture--can't even get to the taste. Then there's pumpkin. I like pumpkin bread, pumpkin scones, pumpkin soup, but I loathe pumpkin pie.
beth1 at 12:44AM on 10/30/08
This thread is fascinating! If it doesn't even make sense to ourselves how we can love AND hate the same ingredient, then we dare not tell the world. Thank goodness our fellow SEers understand. Phew. I can breathe again! Okay if I laugh at you, as I laugh at myself? Some of these are freakin' nuts!
PerkyMac at 12:55AM on 10/30/08
Not a food, but coffee..... LOVE coffee, must have coffee, but cannot stand anything coffee flavored. Coffee ice cream - yuck. Oh and spinach is just nasty.
Rhiannon at 12:58AM on 10/30/08
I don't like coconut meat, but I can tolerate the flavor in savory dishes. It's mostly a texture thing.
I'm also a little bit picky about what gets mixed with chocolate. Not real crazy about chocolate with fruits. Chocolate covered fresh strawberries are okay, but' I'd prefer the two separately. I've only recently decided that chocolate and banana are okay in a shake or smoothie or alcoholic beverage. But I don't even like the idea of a frozen chocolate-covered banana.
dbcurrie at 1:20AM on 10/30/08
@kiwords, i totally agree! Although i found that my issues bacame more pronounced aftter i got into food and cooking.
pickled beets. cannot even stand the smell...
mayoxqueen at 2:17AM on 10/30/08
For me, peanuts are the #1 problem. I have always enjoyed peanut butter - but only the smooth kind. HATE the chunky! I also can't stand peanut pieces on ice cream (esp sundaes), or in most Chinese food - chicken or shrimp w/ peanuts, etc. - although I do enjoy sesame noodle w/ peanut sauce, etc.
After peanuts come the lemons. I enjoy lemons, lemon slices, and lemonade, and I like adding lemon juice to quick-marinade meats, but I literally can't stomach squirting lemon juice on fish - any interaction between any acidic juice and butter during the same meal.
Finally, there's coconut. The coconut milk (juice, whatever you call it) is great, but I cannot take the texture of any of the coconut meat, either in chunks or shredded. Can't eat anything with those shreds in/on it - I have to pick it out of my mouth. Blech.
Robbo at 12:22PM on 10/30/08
Oooh I love eating chunks of young coconut meat. It's so soft and yummy. The dessicated kind you get in stores is okay, my husband HATES it. I don't avoid it, but I won't choose it over eating fresh coconut meat. However, he and I like the long strips of preserved coconut found in Chinese stores, and love coconut milk in our Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian curries and drinks.
I hate yogurt, but I LOOOVE Yakult, tzatziki, and sweetened lassi w/ or w/o mango.
Cassaendra at 12:35PM on 10/30/08
For me, I HATE grape flavoring, but I love grapes. Grape flavoring tastes NOTHING like grapes people!

@Beth oh, me too. Can't stand mayonnaise. Which has led to a whole host of other issues, especially since my boyfriend hates that ranch dressing makes me gag. Sorry?
@HeartofGlass with you on the white "chocolate"! Those cookies are just so rich and creamy, but I hate white chocolate. (The confection that is Hershey's cookies and cream candy bar is also acceptable once in awhile). Milk chocolate is to hand out to the little kiddies at Halloween, while I savor the good dark stuff!
nightowl at 2:23PM on 10/30/08
@mayoxqueen--beets! they get a bad rap from being pickled. It's a waste of a good beet. However, a roasted golden beet, drizzled with honey and dusted with cinnamon or sliced in a salad with a citrus vinaigrette will make you fall in love with beets.
beth1 at 11:56PM on 10/30/08
@Beth I have yet to try freshly cooked beets. I hear it's a totally different taste. maybe this season I'll be brave and try them...
mayoxqueen at 3:54PM on 11/01/08
I hate, hate, hate mushrooms--the texture, at least. I don't mind the flavor if they're pureed in something, but bite into one and I will gag.
I strongly dislike bean sprouts and always ask for my chow mein without them. I have a suspicion they are used mainly as a filler, anyway. Oh, and water chestnuts too.
I love coconut milk in curries and sauces, but can't stand the dried, shredded stuff, especially when it's been sweetened. No Mounds or Almond Joy for me.
I love bananas but can't abide banana-flavored anything.
And I love chocolate, and love peanut butter, but never the twain shall meet.
buffy at 4:13PM on 11/01/08
I hate the texture of avacado but love guacamole. Hate any kind of tomatos raw. But cooked in anyway shape or form I love. Its that texture thing about the raw ones.
pjracz10 at 5:35PM on 11/01/08
I like carrots, raw or cooked, but loathe carrot juice. Its the liquidy/gritty texture. Ergh.
