Hate to Eat and Run...
I was reading The New York Times' article on famous restauranteur Joe Bastianich and how he's gearing up for his first marathon. do serious runners really eat things like grilled steak and pizza during training?

i do not think the article presented him as a
"serious runner" just a runner btw love the imperious tone you must know a lot about sports and life in general

Ok, I may not be a "serious runner," but I sure as heck eat steak and pizza while training... not while running, though, that would be a bit messy...

Thank you for such an inspiring article! I'm so proud of Joe B, and I can't believe how he has transformed himself!

Yeah, I about fell out of my chair when I saw the picture with the article! I was shocked by how much weight he's lost. Good for him.

i suspect if you really ARE burning that many calories sometimes you do need to put them back on, in more "efficient" (read: bad for you) ways than just lean protein. the ultra-marathon man (the guy who ran 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days) said in his book that he would order whole pizzas to the street he was running on, fold them up like a burrito, and eat them WHILE running to keep his body going. he ate lots of food we would consider unhealthy to build the fat his body was burning through.
i think it all depends on how your body burns what you take in.

I got so used to Baby Huey Joe that this new one was overwhelming. I love when people learn to eat in moderation. Everyone has to pick their poison so to speak. Joe has learned how to live healthier more power to him. I have much admiration for the son of Mama Lidia. Men always burn fat better than women. Let's see those spandex shorts. HAHA

Saw Joe this morning on the Today Show, almost unrecognizable.Did notice that his appetizers paired with wine were all pretty high protein and carb lacking. Whatever works for ya Joe. God Bless and good luck.

Oh my god! I didn't recognize him at all. When people lose weight it makes me realize that I have no concept of weight. I've seen him plenty of times on his mom's cooking show. Seeing him now I would have said it appears as if he's lost 75 pounds. That's how thin someone looks after 45 lbs? That's ridiculous! He's half the man he used to be.

WOW! Good for him. he looks fantastic. goes to show you can eat what you like in moderation as long as you do the work to burn it off

@VerasTastyFreeze: You're absolutely right.
@intermsoffootball: Steak and pizza are excellent recovery foods. The body needs protein and especially carbs to repair itself after long training runs and the steak/pizza plan meets those needs quite nicely.
And I do speak from experience, as I completed my first marathon last fall.

Congrats Susquehanna! That's a great acomplishment. Good luck on your next one!

Individuals metabolize foods at all different rates of efficiency. If someone is in great shape and can eat such foods without problems, I see no reason why they couldn't be included in a regimen where the athlete needed protein and/or carbs.
Imagine! Using things like steak and pizza as (gasp) fuel.

I've been running for 22 years, ran 4 marathons (can't anymore - bum knee, but still run half marathons) -- but I don't know if I'm a "serious" runner. I'm pretty slow and not competitive about it at all, just love doing it -- keeps the pounds and stress at bay. I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant and yup, still running! Though a bit slower these days...
Anyway, I always found that while training, my body told me what it needed. It was usually quite a lot of food! Sometimes steak (not often, but I'm not a frequent meat eater any time), often pizza, it varied a lot.

@CookiePie: Consider yourself a a serious runner. Please. Jesus on a jetski!

There's a famous ultramarathoner in the Bay Area who's known for ordering whole pizzas to eat as he goes on his long runs.
runnereater at 9:06PM on 11/01/08
@Susquehanna -- I think "Jesus on a jetski" might be my new favorite expression!! (It used to be "Jesus Christ on a toasted bagel," which I think came from Christopher Buckley) :)
