izzy, this is just mean. Only one person?! Okay.
Off the top of my head, I'd pick Alton Brown. First of all, he reminds me SO MUCH of my dad that I think it'd be very comfortable very quickly. Also, I can't get enough of his quirky personality on "Good Eats" -- which would, embarassingly enough, be our first topic. I'd love to know where he gets his ideas for show themes. But then I'd move on to more general things -- I'd want to know what places he's traveled to and which were his favorites, where he still wants to go, and (gossip gossip) who his favorite chefs are, who's a friend and who's a jerk, etc. He seems so passionate about anything that I can see this dinner lasting a few hours with some fantastic conversation.
As for the food -- I'm thinking simple and delicious. Perhaps some hole-in-the-wall diner, or maybe a family-run Italian place; wherever/whatever, it has to have good red wine -- that always puts me in a talkative mood.

I would have to say Paula Dean because she reminds me of m \y grandma and I just can never get enough of her personality; Its great! I would talk with her about her career in the culinary arts and were I could go with mine. I would have to say I would be at Marie Calenders drinking pink lemonade ;)

I've been listening to a lot of Nirvana lately. If it were possible to resurrect Kurt Cobain, I'd choose him. We'd eat Mac and Cheese out of the blue box, which is sickening, but I read it was one of his favorite foods. We'd talk about how badly George Bush has messed up the country and how thankful he should be that he missed it. We'd also talk about how loony his then-wife has gotten and what he'd be doing musically if he didn't, you know, kill himself.

Easy - my granddaughter. We'd celebrate her 4th birthday, she'd be wearing her favorite Cinderella or princess dress, we'd have hummus and raw veggies, then pig out on a castle birthday cake. We always sing together and she recites poems to me on the phone, but we'd get to do it in person. Lord, I miss that beautiful princess!

I have fantasies about that sexy/handsome dude in the Barella commercials. We'd each have a glass of red wine and I'd just stare at him while he eats -- I wouldn't have too much of an appetite. (I can dream can't I)

Joss Whedon. We'd have pizza and beer and I'd try to talk him into making Serenity II, or making movies out of Dean Koontz' Odd Thomas series.

Victoria Beckham. I want to see if she actually eats.

Yes! Put a chocolate souffle in front of her and see if she smiles, too.

I would love to have lunch with the SE staff. They always go to great places and eat great things. I don't think that lunch with them would be anything shy of a very good time. Who is going with me?
Lunch with the SE staff. Could be a semi annual event.

Bourdain. No question. We'd eat at Animal, Jon Shook and Vinnie Dotolo's restaurant in LA. I really want to meet him and I think we'd both enjoy the cuicine there(I just read the Two Dudes, One Pan cookbook).

No forget Santa. Alf.

@buffy Dean Koontz is a thrilling author!
I honestly don't know. There are so many interesting people. I'm going to say: A complete stranger. No one famous. Just a person. I'd be eating some sort of hearty pasta and drinking a glass of red wine. We'd talk about whatever comes to mind, anything and everything. Then? Then, after dinner, we'd get dessert. After dessert, we'd part ways, not planning to meet again, our lives a little bit more enriched for sharing a meal and getting to know one another.

@nightowl ~ if you're paying, just tell me where and when! ;-D
PerkyMac at 2:10PM on 10/29/08
@nightowl ~ sounds like a first date that went great, but the chemistry was missing.
PerkyMac at 2:12PM on 10/29/08
I just think it would be fun. I like having conversations with strangers, especially when they turn out to share one or more of my interests. Problem is, I'm really shy, so I never begin those conversations. Besides, people are really interesting. And if I say any more, you're gonna think I've watched Fight Club a few too many times.
nightowl at 2:40PM on 10/29/08
On second thought, maybe I'd just like to have dinner with Dean Koontz. And the ghost of Trixie.

Haha. My daughter, who recently moved to NYC and was a writing major, is waiting tables while looking for the job of her dreams. She was telling me about a new regular customer she has, he always asks for her, they really enjoy each other's company and know a surprising amount about each other's lives and relationships. She offers advice on dealing with the children of his love interest; he's older, and he told her he might be able to help her meet someone in publishing since he's a published author himself. "Really?" she asked, "What did you write?"
The Black Dahlia, L.A. Confidential...
She's friends with James Ellroy???!!!
yes.

@kfarrel3 haha Alton Brown reminds me of my Dad too..... in fact there was one video with oatmeal that I sent around to my family and certain family members thought it was him! My dad LOVES his oatmeal.
Anyways Alton Brown would be cool to come as a guest, also Mark Bittman.
