Freaky Frozen Food Habits?

Do you like to eat frozen foods that are not traditionally eaten frozen?

I adore noshing on frozen vegetables and I've learned that this strikes more than one person as really odd. Frozen peas, edamame and especially corn. I also love to dip frozen green beans in a creamy horseradish dip.

How about you? Anybody eat unusually frozen foods?!?

I never have, but my son used to LOVE frozen french fries, right out of the package with salt, pepper, and ketchup. According to his wife, he never grew out of it. ----- Yuck!

We freeze fresh grapes and eat them like little bite-sized sweet ice-balls! Great summertime treat. Better than popcicles for the kids -- No HFCS!

I should comment, however, that one should NEVER give frozen grapes to small children who may choke on these. My kids are older, and are less likely to choke.

I like to pick at the frozen corn when I cook it... so good when nice and cold like that... I also love the frozen grapes, great in the summertime.

Frozen grapes are great. I also used to eat frozen Thin Mints (of the the Girl Scout variety).

Frozen chocolate chip cookies - I prefer them this way. Warm out of the oven? No thanks, I'll wait until they freeze.

I once ate frozen Ellio's pizza. It was delicious at the time, but please know that I am ashamed now.

Like @brownie- my daughter (age 9) ate and still will eat things frozen that are meant to be cooked. When she was younger, she ate all manner of frozen veggies (peas, corn, carrots) and I tried this because she got very picky about veggies - another mom gave me the tip! She also ate frozen fries and waffles - still does eat the fries in fact. I've passed the idea along to other moms who are struggling with getting veggies and fibre into their kids.

The only things I eat frozen are ice cream, sorbet, ice cream treats and Thin Mints. I can not stand anything else frozen.

@Perky: You and my mom...I don't get it. How do you taste anything?? My mom loves freezing things...Candy bars, cookies, tastycakes...At least she knows we won't eat them. She will eat warm cookies sometimes-of course that's after I keep pestering her.

PerkyMac--I love frozen baked goods of almost all kinds--some of them don't get hard, they just get this wonderful, dense texture, particularly chocolate chip muffins.

I also like barely nuked chick'n or vegan veggie patties from Boca with ketchup.

Eggo frozen waffles are good in the summer--as are
frozen fruits.

Frozen candy bars are almost 'no brainers' for goodness, and I haven't had them in years, but some varieties of Pop Tarts are advertised as 'best frozen' like mint chocolate and strawberry milkshake.

Oh yeah, and I'm not a mint choco-phile, but Girl Scout Thin Mints are much better frozen.

How do you taste anything? The same way you taste ice cream.

My personal fave is the frozen homemade chocolate waffles.

Really? I've never heard of this???!!!

I might have to give frozen grapes it a shot now seeing all of these comments.

Sometimes a buy those little cups of yogurt and put sticks in them and freeze them for little yogurt popsicles--I don't know how freaky that is though.

I eat frozen peas and frozen corn. Especially in the summer. I just pour it out into a coffee cup and tip it into my mouth. As far as I'm concerned it's a tasty snack, refreshing and healthy.

YESS frozen peas and frozen raspberries. The raspberries are the best, because halfway through eating they get really melty and juicy. This was my favorite dessert for years and years, we used to go through 5 bags a week!

@lemons: When I eat anything frozen other than what I wrote, all I get is hard nothingness. It's like my tastebuds get no flavor. Guess I'm the weirdo and not my mom. :)

Frozen grapes, absolutely. My previous neighbor introduced them to me when she couldn't attend a New Year's party I was hosting...she came over the day of with an enormous freezer bag of frozen grapes, and instructed me to use them as ice cubes for mixed drinks at the party. Brilliant!

The only other non-typical frozen thing I like is my grandmother's over-my-dead-body-you'll-know-the-recipe german chocolate cake with chocolate maple frosting. It's incredibly soft but dense, and despite a complete lack of anything artificial, it is chewy and delicious right out of the freezer.

For you frozen grape lovers: try rolling them in a bit of diluted egg white with Frangelico and then rolling in extrafine sugar before freezing. Pretty, tasty dessert garnish, or just dessert themselves in a pretty glass.

@cybele: This is just uncanny. I sip frozen veggies out of a coffee cup, too! I feel a bit better about myself now. LOL.

@Perky: I'm trying some frozen cookies. Cold thin mints are awesome. I bet a chewy frozen oatmeal type cookie would rock. Der. No pun intended.

I'm a big fan of frozen fruit straight from the freezer. For fun frozen treats, try dropping blueberries or raspberries in your ice cube trays, fill with water and freeze. The ice cubes look really pretty in the glass and you get a nice yummy treat too.

I sign up for the frozen grape crowd. Also, one of my granddaughers will not drink orange juice but has one or two homemade popsicles of plain orange juice every weekend.

@Maureen - the only non-pureed vegetables my 2-year-old will eat are frozen peas (sometimes). We used to have a glass ramekin-type dish in the freezer with his peas in it. =)

watermelon. Even better if filled with vodka and frozen whole. Yum!

ok, i have to admit loving frozen cheese bread, but i only discovered the joys of this one on a night when baking for 20 minutes seemed like waaaay to long for my stomach.

My hubby loves my homemade pound cake straight out of the freezer. I don't get it! But it makes me smile to watch him enjoy it...

I love frozen:
swedish fish
banana dipped in hershey syrup
snickers bars
orange juice
lemonade

My brother got me hooked on frozen grapes years ago and I segued to frozen blueberries from there.

I once had some leftover cheesecake and needed a quick dessert. So I made these. They went over really big. Just stuck a plastic spoon into a hunk of cheesecake, then drizzled chocolate all over it. Put them on a plastic lined sheet tray and froze them.

frozen fruit is a given.
frozen peanut butter M&M's (just make sure they aren't laced with melamine)
frozen yogurt---yeah cup of stonyfield yogurt (shake up the fruit at the bottom kind so it mixes up and stick it in the freezer)
mom always gets york pepermint patties as a treat and freezes them, yum!
hmm..i could use one of those now...

OH i also made some really good frozen "S'more sticks" this summmer! A pretzel rod with a 2 marshmallows stuck on, dipped in chocolate, rolled in graham cracker crumbs and frozen!

We always dipped our frozen bananas in melted chocolate chips, rolled them in chipped peanuts, then froze them again. Also frozen Butterfingers are the best.

susquehanna - maybe it's a regional thing? I'm guessing you're in/from Pennsylvania? (I have no idea where I got this habit from, I know I've been eating them since I was a kid, and loved it when Mom would buy frozen peas in a bag instead of those boxes because it was easier to take some and reclose it.)

I was reading this litany of frozen foods sorta grossed out and oddly fascinated, but then someone mentioned the frozen pound cake...well, I guess I'm one of you weirdos after all...that was my favorite indulgence in college...frozen Sarah Lee pound cake...one slice at a time from the freezer.

Very Interesting indeed! I don't eat ice cream. I know, I know....... I have never eaten anything frozen right out of the freezer! When I was little I ate popsicles. I do use frozen fruits in my morning smoothies. Eliminates the need for ice cubes. You guys never cease to amuse and amaze me!! That said, I don't think I will take up the practice. ;-)

Frozen Sara Lee pound cake, frozen Eggo waffles, frozen raspberries and frozen bananas dipped in chocolate. Oh and frozen Andes Candies creme de menthe rocks.

I must try frozen pound cake. I'm guessing it's very chewy.

Earlier today, I visited a country bakery (a "shoppe") that sold frozen whoopie pies, frozen pumpkin rolls and frozen banana bread. I wanted to try them all without defrosting them. I can't imagine what the frozen icing is like. Will it crack and break-up or be chewy, too?

@cybele: Good call on the Pennsylvania residence. I'm a Quaker Stater. Born in Harrisburg and currently residing near Pittsburgh.

when i was growing up they used to sell Devil Dogs in the new england area, they were nasty and dry as dust, but freeze them and pure heaven, never understood it but boy did i enjoy it.

Frozen grapes, oranges, bananas dipped in chocolate.

When we were kids, my sister and I would eat frozen french fries right out of the bag as well.

@Perky: I do the frozen chocolate chip cookies too. And I keep Dove chocolate morsels in the freezer and suck on them until they melt.

frozen raspberries are a standard dessert for me in the winter.

lemon squares are wonderful frozen, as is key lime pie.

Add me to the grapes, bananas and Thin Mints lists... mmmmm... especially frozen Thin Mints. One of my favorites. Which is SO weird, because I normally have absolutely no interest in chocolate and mint together... huh...

When I was in junior high, my (then) best friend and I used to love to walk down to the supermarket late on a Saturday night (sleepover) and buy a Sara Lee Cherry Cheesecake, which we would promptly devour with two spoons, straight out of the package, on my bedroom floor (I wasn't supposed to have any food in my room) whilst still frozen the minute we got home.

Wow. I haven't thought about that in, like, forever!!! And, actually I haven't even looked twice at a Sara Lee product in at least 20 years. But man oh man... that was so good! I might have to make me a "real" cheesecake and freeze a few slices for my kids to try frozen...

I don't, but I had a friend in grade school that like to eat frozen Campbell's cream of mushroom soup.

I loved hand dipped chocolate strawberries frozen. The huge ones.
It is amazing. I loved pound cake frozen. Also the Perfect Party cake from Nick Maglieri and Dorie Greenspan with lemon curd or raspberry preserves and coconut was great frozen.
Chocolate cake with chocolate icing sliced thin.

Oh man, frozen peas ARE THE BEST! (sorry, had to shout it from the rooftops)

Also, cheesecake frozen is the only way to eat it, in my opinion.

Frozen yogurt-- putting a container of regular yogurt in the freezer. Makes a wonderful treat topped with fruit, chocolate chips, etc.

My son freezes his Dr. Pepper and eats it with a spoon.

@honeybumper! I forgot about frozen devil dogs! Those were fabulous as a kid! I also love frozen Sara Lee pound cake...

I also remembered one other thing my DH and daughter love frozen: Those Del Monte or Dole cups of mandarin oranges, frozen solid. It's like an Italian ice!

One of my favorite breakfasts is a pint of frozen blueberries, with milk and a little sugar poured over the top, eaten like cereal. The sweet milk freezes and gets slushy around the berries, almost like ice cream. Yum!

Have absolutely no desire to eat frozen vegetables. Am I missing something?

OMG, I knew I was forgetting something!!!

I put those jell-o pudding cups in the freezer, and let them slowly defrost when I'm ready to eat them. Makes me think of Bill Cosby.

I'd be curious to see WHY and when people starting eating _____ frozen.

In my case, I made a ton of chocolate chip cookies in advance and froze them so they wouldn't go stale and so I wouldn't be tempted to eat my favorite sweet in the whole world. So, they were all frozen and I couldn't resist and I also couldn't wait the couple of minutes it would take to thaw. I like them thinish, buttery and crisp on the edges, and it wasn't a real stretch to eat them frozen. It was a voila moment that repeated itself quite a few times as I was opening the freezer door a lot more often than usual. ;)

I've only ever eaten frozen cheesecake (which was meant to be defrosted), but it's very close to ice cream, so I reckon it's not really weird. I can't think of anything else...

@pjracz10 - sorry to your grade-school friend; frozen Campbell's cream of mushroom soup sounds soo grosss (isn't it always condensed???)

@dianeb - I don't have the desire either, but I might be surprised with the peas. I want to try the watermelon and the banana thing though.

I coudn't see anyone in this thread shouting oreos!; Mr."Bam" himself would be ashamed of you all. LOL

Not freaky, but I love frozen banana slices; no chocolate, just plain. They get creamy and delicious. My favorite frozen fruit out of the bag is cherries. I am amazed at the savory things you guys like frozen!

@hungrychristel unfortunately yes, it is condensed and that is how she ate the s*#t.

i only keep vodka and ice in my freezer

@lambowner: I haven't had frozen soda in a long time. It's good. My mom used to get me a Coca-cola ICEE at K-Mart when I was little.

@HFCS/sugar haters: Please, refrain from maligning my mom for giving me sugar. I turned out OK. So far.

Hmm. Even though it's kinda' lowbrow, a soda "granita" (with or w/o ice cream) could be a fun dessert to make for a summer barbeque.

I'll second (or fiftieth, whatever) much of what's been said above. I love frozen peas too, actually. And frozen corn. Frozen edamame I eat simply because I am too lazy to go through with steaming it. Frozen grapes are the greatest things in the world, but you always have to make sure to let them dry completely after washing before freezing them or else they just don't taste right.

And Devil Dogs were never really my cup of tea, but that did remind me of Yodels. Freeze, bite off the ends, and then slowly eat away at the spiral until you're left with just that tightly-wound middle. Amazing.

I like to freeze those little individual applesauce cups, and eat them frozen, scraping with a spoon. The other thing I really like frozen is making my own personal uncrustables. They're peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. For some reason, frozen peanut butter is amazing.

Ooh! I just had an incredibly bad idea. Bananas smeared with peanut butter dipped in chocolate then frozen. Decadent!

They were demoing cream puffs at Costco today. They are in the freezer section. It was pretty much still frozen. Made my teeth ache. Tasted pretty good I have to admit!

I don't know why Costco / Sam's Club frozen cream puffs are so good.

Little Debbie nutty bars are great from the freezer, too.

A friend of mine once made espresso brownies with caramel topping, and served them cold out of the freezer. I still dream about them sometimes...

Any frozen cookie. My Mom used to freeze her Christmas cookies as she made them so we wouldn't eat them until the holidays. We snuck them out anyway, and now we prefer them that way. Just watch out for those nuts! Dad cracked a tooth on a frozen pecan cookie and had to get a root canal! Mom had no pity on the poor guy LOL!

Frozen peas are great and I'm from Seattle, not the N.E.
Frozen corn is a delight in texture.
Mrs. Smiths (?) eclairs are way better frozen, don't bother with the thawing instructions.
Off subject...anyone eat Top Ramen raw, with a sprinkle of seasoning, as a snack?

Oh, and of course my Grandma Ruth's spritz cookies, I used to sneak them out of the freezer in the garage whenever I could.

It is so nice to hear that I'm not the only one who eats frozen foods. I love frozen veggies but especially frozen corn!!! Frozen corn, peas, grapes, and raspberries are my favorite! I figure it's better than eating chips and other greasy fatty foods.

Shelby, you wash your grapes?

Oreos and Thin Mints can ONLY be eaten from the freezer. (My boys were heard apologizing the other day to some friends; for some reason my mom keeps them in the freezer.
My kids have always snacked on frozen grapes, peas and corn. My daughter's roommates are always a little stunned when the buy grapes and she puts them in the freezer.
When they were little I made baby "popsicles" in ice cube trays out of cranberry juice, orange juice, apple juice and some with milk sweetened with fruit juice. They loved the milk ones. (Those weren't mixed, they were individual)
Chocolate must always be frozen and then dipped in peanut butter and eaten.
Perrier frozen in ice trays and used for cranberry juice. YUM.

I didn't realize before this question how many things we freeze and eat frozen.
Good thread!

Fruits are very tasty when frozen. Like Nature's Italian ice! Refreshingly sweet and frosty. I loved to snack on frozen strawberries when I was a little girl and a teen. Still do.
Other items that are yummy frozen are many candies, such as York Peppermint Patties. Mmmmmm. And yes, Thin Mint cookies

@lambowner --- Frozen Dr. pepper! Like a Slurpee!
Yes, frozen cheesecake tastes absolutely divine!

@ nightowl - they actually sell that at some places here in Sao Paulo - Bananas covered in chocolate then frozen. Awesome!
