First time in NYC, where's great to eat??

Hello! i'm planning my first (and long awaited) trip to New York next year. Me and my boyfriend are keen "foodies" and love up market restaurants-although i'm a fussy eater.

Can anybody recommend some really great places? and if possible let me know what kind of food they do.

I'm very keen to try the tavern on the green - has anyone been? im guessing it's expensive but does anyone know how expensive?

Any other New York advice would be appreciated :-)
