Filipino "Treat"
Growing up in the Los Angeles area had its pitfalls; easy access to drugs, a slew of rival gangs, a ridiculous divide between the haves and have nots, but thankfully none of that really affected me because I was a total nerd.
Now that I think about it, my favorite part about growing up here was the diverse ethnic groups that coexisted in just about every neighborhood. I had countless Mexican friends, Korean friends, Filipino friends, Mexican friends, Ecuadoran friends- the list is endless, though funnily enough I had very few white friends.
Anyhow, earlier tonight I was thinking about all the houses I used to hang out in while growing up. Some of my fondest memories as a kid are standing around in my friend's kitchens watching their parents prepare things I'd never heard of. I still remember my first bite of kimchi ...
I have a pretty good memory, but for the life of me I can't remember the specifics of something my Filipina friend would eat. I remember asking her if it was supposed to be a dessert or a meal and she simply said, "No, it's just a treat." After refusing her numerous attempts to get me to try this "treat," she finally gave up.
I wasn't as adventurous about food as I am now, sadly. Her "treat" consisted of mashed up avocado, milk and sugar. That's all I remember, there may have been more to it, but I can't recall.
Does anyone know what this is called, if there were more ingredients involved and if it's something commonly eaten in Filipino households?
