Chicken Soup in NYC
I'm nursing a pretty bad cold and am desperate for chicken soup. Any recommendations on where I can go to get some awesome soup in Manhattan (or, I live in Prospect Heights in Brooklyn so something in that area would be awesome too) would be greatly appreciated!

hmm, prospect heights, I wrote a times piece on where to find the best chicken soup in new york, but it didn't include any prospect heights places. I will ask around and see if any serious eaters have any suggestions.

Thanks. I work on the upper west side so anywhere in between works too. I'm going to look for your times piece.

When I can't get my grandma's chicken soup (which I make), I go the Chinese or Vietnamese soup route which also seems to do the trick. If you have a favorite Asian restaurant, even if they don't have it specifically on the menu, they might be able to cook something up for you.

I get chicken rice soup at the Chinese restaurants too. I also have a quick recipe for chicken soup to make at home. It's easy even if you are sick. I always keep a package of those prepared chicken strips in the fridge for fast salads and soup (canned chicken works, too). Heat two cups of chicken broth (you can use buillion cubes or those boxes of prepared chicken broth). Boil instant an instant rice package on the side (Success takes 10 minutes). When the rice is done, add it to the broth along with a small can of carrots, a cup of cooked chicken, garlic, salt, pepper and parsley. You have plenty of chicken soup right at home to see you through.

I would try the Mien Ga at Safran if the Vietnamese route is good for you. The chef there used to work at Monsoon (RIP) on the UWS and I loved their chicken soup.

Honestly, the best chicken soup can be found at the Second Avenue Deli, now located at 33rd and 3rd Ave in NYC. Matzo ball soup. It's home made, light, so it wont irritate your tummy, and sooo tasty!
However, in Brooklyn, the closest thing I would say to Prospect Heights is Teresas on Montague Street near Hicks in Brooklyn Heights. Their chicken soup has lots of long (spaghetti) noodles and 'hits the spot'!
Just a suggestion - if you know any Jamaican places - ginger brew, (Not ginger tea) is Really good for colds. Drink it hot if you can get homemade.
Good luck!
