Beyond 'what's that smell'....being a New Jersey foodie
I've lived in many places in my life--London, Boston, and throughout New England--but I was born and raised in New Jersey, and it's been my home once again for the past several years.
Perhaps it's my demented imagination, but it seems like there are lots of other people from NJ on the board. Recently, I was in Delicious Orchards for the first time since I was a kid, and was surprised how gourmet it had gotten, but also that the food was still good (although nothing ever lives up to memories) So I just thought I'd start a general NJ chat thread for a bit, as a kind of 'heads up' about 'what's doin' in the Great Garden State.
Questions:
What NJ places to buy food or eat out are you currently patronizing?
--I'm currently obsessed with Wegman's in my town.
What NJ 'secrets' do you know of for pizza/bagels/Italian pastries/fried chicken/Asian food in your area ?
--Artillio's in my town (West Long Branch) makes what I consider the Platonic pizza. It's in a no-name strip mall, literally zero atmosphere, run by a Italian couple who can't speak English, and yet has crisp crackly crust on the bottom, moist near the topping, just the right topping and sauce spice...perfect tomato pie.
--Also, Richard's in West End, Long Branch is a great old-fashioned deli. Pictures of 1940s film stars on the wall, complementary pickles and coleslaw, the 'real deal.'
What places did you love (nostalgia) if you grew up in NJ?
--Oddly enough, my family's go-to restaurant was a place called "Squire's Pub" a British restaurant that used to serve traditional meals, going from a 'relish tray' of celery and olives, to clam chowder, Gorgonzola salad, prime rib, and dessert, with cheese and bread. Not very Jersey, but great memories, although now closed.
What is overrated, in your opinion?
--In my area pretty much all places near the water--Bahr's Landing and Pier Village as a whole.
Anything you're looking for in NJ, food-wise?
--I'm always looking for good vegetarian restaurants

Oh I miss my Wegman's. Once you go Wegman's it's so very hard to go back. The one on 35 used to be my local but I have since moved up North. We've got a lovely new Whole Foods over in West Orange but nothing compares to Wegman's.
I can't complain too much, I live in Montclair now and we have a good farmer's market on Saturday's and some of the best restaurants in the state. Our favorites are Blu, Fascino, and Table 8. We get great pies from Gina's on Walnut Street.
For pastries it's Gencarelli's in Bloomfield.
Pizza, I love Vic's in Bradley Beach. Our go to takeout place is Villa Victoria in Montclair
Bagels, I’m a sucker for a black Russian bagel and I don’t find those too often so my top places are based on the fact that they make black Russian bagels. Bagels International in Bradley Beach makes really big chewy bagels. The bagel stop in Watchung Plaza in Montclair is my northern bagel spot.
Nostalgia: I miss going to Jackie’s Lemon Ice in Bellville with my great uncle. It’s a Rita’s now; Rita’s bears absolutely no resemblance to lemon ice if you ask me. Strollo’s in Belmar makes the best Italian ice I can find today. I remember when the butcher used to deliver and when we had a milk box on the front porch. There was Brookdale Soda, black cherry and that neon green lemon lime, that got delivered too.

I'm from Ocean Township originally... oddly right next door to West Long Branch. Hello.
Wegmans is amazing. I used to live 5 minutes from the one on Rt. 35. Absolutely OBSESSED with Delicious Orchards, been going since a little kid. Now that I live in Jersey City I am sad I can't get here easily and our grocery stores never have what I need. Apple Cider donuts. Enough said.
NJ secrets: Maybe it's not a secret anymore but I've always been a huge fan of Vic's and Pete & Elda's. Jimmy's Taste of Italy in Tinton Falls is one of the most amazing Italian delis with the most accomodating staff especially around the holidays. Pastries, the Macaroon Shop in Belmar. In other areas of NJ: Teresa's in Princeton has incredible personal-sized pizzas.
Bagels: Lame-sounding, but 'what about a bagel' on West Park Ave in Ocean was a hot spot for me in high school. Plus they have flagels.
Nostalgia: Squire's Pub because my grandparents used to like taking us there. All the Italian places in Ocean/Long Branch where you can get a huge plate of pasta for 11 bucks and it's served to you by an authentic 100% Italian Jersey boy. The Columns in Avon. Strollo's. Susan Murphy's Ice Cream in Spring Lake.
Overrated: Nearly anything with the words "shack" or "crab".. I hate a lot of the seafood restaurants in Monmouth County, I think I've always gotten sick when eating out.
Vegetarian restaurants: I used to work at Down To Earth, a now-defunct organic vegan restaurant in Red Bank. Loved that place. Kaya's Kitchen in Belmar is still open. (817 Belmar Plaza) All vegetarian. Also the Eurasian Eatery in Red Bank has a bunch of great vegetarian dishes. (110 Monmouth Street)
I feel like I could say more, I could honestly write paragraph upon paragraph about this topic. That's enough for now.. :)

@Heart - hello neighbour! (jumping up and down and waving) I'm in Toms River. I've been here for 6 years now, but I don't suppose I can tell you anything you don't already know:-).
Food shopping - unfortunately, the closest Wegman's is probably the one you shop at (or the one in Freehold, but my OH tells me it's about the same distance), so I don't get to do much shopping there - but I absolutely fell in love with the place the first time I ever set foot there! In fact, just the other day I finished the last jar of Wegman's organic peanut butter when I made a silken tofu-peanut butter mousse pie, and thought that it's time to take another trip.
Ironically, I do quite a lot of my shopping at the Asian Supermarket in Pleasantville, even though it's also rather far away. I may not go there too often, but I probably buy about 60-70% of our food there (other than produce).
Speaking of produce, this summer we've been getting (picking, that is) most of our produce at Hallock's U-Pick farm (in New Egypt) - I can't even tell you how much I love it! We've been truly spoilt with all those wonderful fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs (yes, I picked several pounds of each: basil, dill and cilantro:-)), plus it's really fun to pick your own (and makes me feel good, too). I'm going to miss this dearly! At least I've preserved, frozen, jarred, dried as much as I could. Still working on it, as a matter of fact.
My favourite places to eat out include Tokyo for sushi (the place may not look like much, but the food is spectacular) and Rivoli's for Italian (although we haven't been to Rivoli's in a looooong time), both are here, in Toms River. I make my own pizza (I started mostly due to the fact that it has to be cheese-less for my OH and cheese-only for me, and believe it or not, I could not find a place in the area that makes a decent pizza bianca, let alone cheese-less), so no pizza place recommendations (other than my house:-)).
For somebody who has nothing new to add, I sure have been talking a lot, haven't I?
brooke29 at 11:10PM on 10/21/08
I grew up in Central NJ and raised my children in South Jersey. Trenton tomato pie (pizza) was awesome - DeLorenzo's. Duffield's Farm in Turnersville has the best produce I've ever tasted and their homemade baked goods and breads were delicious. I had some great seafood in different shore communities, but they're probably gone now.
I'm in PA now.
I know Wegman's from upstate NY and there is nothing that compares. I could have spent my life there! I fell in love. Always made room in the car to take groceries home.
PerkyMac at 11:40PM on 10/21/08
I travel all the way from Lanoka Harbor to the Wegman's on Rt. 35 at least every other month. The Whole Foods in Middletown too.
I grew up in Seaside Park, lived there for 25 years, spent 10 years in Toms River, now in LH for the last year. Best pizza hands down is Maruca's on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights. It's a Trentonn tomato pie type. As is the pizza at the restaurant where I work (when well) in Bayville. Shameless plug: Shady Rest...tiny place with a great little bar, tomato pies, great steaks and seafood (okk, everything is pretty darn good and homemade) and in the summer, a huge rose garden patio, lovingly cultivated by the owner. It's been in the same family since 1966.
brooke, I found Rivolis to be too much gimmick. Yes, the portions are ridiculously huge, but I didn't really enjoy the food too much. I haven't tried Tokyo yet, but will do so now.
Tenampa in TR, Brick and Manahawkin is awesome Mexican. From April-Oct the Chicken or the Egg (the ChEGG) on Long Beach Island is a must go for chicken wings. Do NOT go on a Wednesday night (wing night) unless you're prepared to wait an hour or more. Klee's in Seaside Heights is a great place when you want to hang out at a bar. It's a restaurant too, but I'm not always crazy about the food. Better for munchies and hanging. Bartenders are knowledgeable, friendly and fun. Frankie's in Pt Pleasant is good too.
I can go on and on, but I'll be good and shush now. :D
scarletini at 2:00PM on 10/22/08
@scarletini ~ Maruca's - how could leave them out? I actually went to High School with some of them, and their pizza place in Trenton was a common place for after school or cheap date pizzas, and they were as good as those down the shore. Believe it or not, Mike's Steakhouse in Ewing and Freddy's in West Trenton also had great pizza/tomato pie. I spent many a summer day in Seaside, especially after I got my first car. So many wonderful memories! I hit Tom's River on occasion, too. Hey Brooke!
PerkyMac at 2:13PM on 10/22/08
Freddy's!! My dad's family is from Trenton and our great Aunt Stella used to take all of the girls to Freddy's once a month. Veal chops. Oh God. Is it still there?
Out that way, my uncle owns Wildflowers in Pennington. Their food used to be pretty good, should still be, but I haven't been in a while.
scarletini at 2:19PM on 10/22/08
OMG @scarletini! Freddy's is still there (love it!) and I've been to Wildflowers many times. I've been there through a couple of ownerships. It was a very popular bar/restaurant when I lived there and (again!) I'm drawing a blank on the name. My first job was working in the Shop Rite across the street and around the circle when I was in HS. That's still there, too. I love that it hasn't changed that much after all these years.
PerkyMac at 2:32PM on 10/22/08
Ken Mather is my uncle's name. He has owned it for at lest 20 years now. His daughters do most of the work now. brooke, if you've been in TR for a long time, he used to own what is now Rivoli's, was Mather's.
Now I want a veal chop and mashed potatoes from Freddy's.
scarletini at 3:19PM on 10/22/08
@scarletini - Mrs. Rivoli was(is?) my FIL's client and I have very fond memories of her home-made profiteroles - I had to do my very best to exercise self-control round them, as I could eat a dozen of them at once! Like I said, we haven't been to the actual place in a very long time, but yes, I do remember that their portions were absolutely, ridiculously enormous (which was actually a plus once when I was very ill and my OH bought something from them - with one order, he had food for that entire week:-)).
I haven't been to the Chicken or the Egg, but from time to time I get a craving for Cluck-U wings...Now I need to check out the ChEGG!
brooke29 at 5:30PM on 10/22/08
Brooke29--I didn't realize we lived so close together! I've heard about Rivoli's and the Flintstone-sized portions, but never been--sounds like you can live off of one entree for a week!
I'm so excited there are so many Wegmans and Delicious Orchard's lovers! Not to make you jealous, brooke29, but I also live within 5 minutes of a Cluck U as well as a Wegman's.
We should do a NJ Serious Eats meet-up at a restaurant reasonably close (or far) for all of us--perhaps in Central NJ, so PerkyMac can come, since Central NJ is somewhat near PA!
Allison--I will check out 'What a Bagel!' VerasTasteeFreeze--everyone recommends Vic's to me and when in Bradley Beach I will check it out.
On, I forgot--for those in the Freehold area, Wemrock Orchards is great, and I like their apple cider doughnuts (gasp) even better than Delicious Orchards.
HeartofGlass at 5:56AM on 10/23/08
This might be viewed as a Tourist Trap but I had the best malt pancakes EVER at Harold's NY Deli. This is the place that serves stuff SO huge, you have to go with a crowd. The locals call the pancakes "hubcaps." The corned beef hash, when made with signature chunks of corned beef instead of whatever sliced corned beef was left from the day before, is a complete hunger killer though you can't stop eating it.
Of late, Harold's seems to have lost some of its luster though :(. My brother lives in Jersey and he says it's not on his list of "every now and then I just gotta have's."
Also, the Tick Tock Diner is an experience. I know that doesn't sound very shee shee but the food was great, stick to your ribs, glad-you-stopped-there fare.
Almost forgot! I had a friend who was married to a Peruvian man and we used to go to Patterson for some of the best rotisserie chix, potatoes with hollandaise and meringues baked to crisp perfection. Inca cola rounded out the meal for the kids but it was way too sweet for me.
therealchiffonade at 7:32AM on 10/23/08
Not to be missed (shout if you concur):
- The floppy, greasy pizza at Jenkinson's on the boardwalk at Pt. Pleasant. The slices are big and always have bubbles.
- The chocolate chip and pecan pancakes at Red Bank's Broadway Diner (open 24/7!)
- The always-warm bagels at Eli's Bagels in Matawan
- The crumb cake from Delicious Orchards ("D.O."). The ratio of sugary brown crumb to cake is about 5:1. Fabulous!
jessica714 at 8:00AM on 10/23/08
There are many fine italian places in NJ. Maybe too numerous to list. The most memorable places, for me, are diners and greasy spoons.
Two places in NJ that are must tries for hotdogs:
- Rutts Hut in Clifton is a regular stop before going to any event at the meadowlands (i live in NYC but grew up in NJ). This was also featured in the No Reservations episode for NJ.
- Johnnies hot dog stand is also phenomenal. Johnnies has the added beneficial location along a beautiful scenic drive on Rt 46 and a favorite of weekend bikers. http://www.hotdogjohnny.com/shop/
The Reo Diner in Woodbridge, NJ for nostalgia. It not only was a post HS party stop, but also has cheese cake that rivals Juniors.
But for real nostalgia, the winner is the Clark White Diamond!
BirdDoggie at 9:00AM on 10/23/08
i completely forgot about the diners! i drive by the tick tock on my way to and from work everyday, but i've got to say it's not one of my favs. it's one of the most famous, but i'll take the Nevada or State Street over the Tick Tock any day. I totally agree with jessica714 breakfast at the Red Bank Broadway diner or their sister diner in Bayonne is kick ass. and the D.O. crumb cake, i don't know if i can forgive you for putting that in my head!
oh, and boardwalk pizza, Mack and Manco's in Ocean City is the best by far. i'd consider driving 2.5 hours for a slice.
VerasTastyFreeze at 3:54PM on 10/23/08
Ha! I've drive a couple of hours for Mack and Manco's too! In fact, we thought about having our wedding at a place down there that offered a boardwalk food package, complete with popcorn, candy apples, peanuts and Mack & Manco's. Unfortunately, even though it was on the boardwalk, the ballroom didn't have a view of the ocean. :-(
I haven't been to D.O. in ages. I love their trawberry rhubarb pies and that darn crumb cake and winesap apples. Wemrock is great too.
Don't even get me started on diners. A friend and I used to travel around the state eating at diners to see which was the best. I wish I could remember the name of the one in (near?) Edison that we found...right down the street from Menlo Park mall. Best eggplnt parm I've ever had and an amazing salad bar with huge chunks of salty Greek feta.
scarletini at 4:35PM on 10/23/08
This is an odd forum, because I see a lot of people are commenting on PIZZA.
Thatis an entirely different post! Tomato Pies in Trenton, and pizza at the shore are fantastic, as good, if not better than Brooklyn pizza.
However, living in Summit for 20 years, we drive to the city (ny, that is) to eat.
I find that NJ is food challenged.
It is lacking a certain "vibe", and the service usually matches the food. We hate BYOB places, which seem to be the norm in most towns.
Sure, we can get a decent meal for $150., but I would rather spend my money in NY, or cook at home.
I love the food at Due Terre in Bernardsville (no vibe, go for the food), the Northern Italian fare is really excellent.
But if it pizza you are looking for, I can give you 5 places all over the state that will blow you away!
Stacey (who loves NJ, by the way, just not for the eats!)
Stacey Snacks at 9:59AM on 10/24/08
PS. I should've added the nostalgic place (but there is that damn pizza again!!!)
Bevacqua's Resevoir Tavern in Parsippany.
It's been there FOREVER, stand in line to get in, excellent pizza and diner style waitresses.
"What are havin' hon?".
SO GOOD!
And the farmers markets are where I shop lately for great poultry and produce.
Sorry, I should've followed the format of the post!

There is a great pork store in Monroe Twp. called Bella Italia. The chicken francaise is the best I've ever had and the family that runs it is incredibly nice. There are also stores in Freehold and a new one opening in Ocean Twp. My family and I always buy from them every week - haven't been disappointed once!

I was born in Bloomfield, moved to England and now I live in Monmouth county.
What NJ places to buy food or eat out are you currently patronizing?
The Whole Foods in Middletown. I am SO happy we finally got one. Getting down to Wegman's in Ocean is a pig, I despise 35 South most times I drive on it. I also love Olive and Bean on Bethany Road in Hazlet and Zebu Forno in the Holmdel Commons and in Red Bank. Both a bit pricey, but the soups are YUM.
What NJ 'secrets' do you know of for pizza/bagels/Italian pastries/fried chicken/Asian food in your area ?
DiPaolos in Newark! Their pastries are delicious, as are the pizzas and stuffed breads. We always get cookies from there and Pannettone. I might be slightly biased, however, since my ad grew up with the owners. Gem's bagels on Union Avenue in Hazlet has delicious bagels and deli sandwiches, and the staff are all local kids and very friendly. Calandra's bread is the best--but my family can never know I said that.
What places did you love (nostalgia) if you grew up in NJ?
Willie's Diner, the Nevada Diner and the (now Dunkin Donut-ized) Short Stop diner.
What is overrated, in your opinion?
Agreed on Pier Village. Also a lot of the bar restaurants in Red Bank are really over priced with not so friendly waitstaff.
Anything you're looking for in NJ, food-wise?
Ditto on the vegetarian restaurants, and also new Japanese places!!
sweethunibabi at 1:33PM on 11/07/08
It's funny this thread reappeared today, because I remembered the previous name of Wildflowers at the Pennington Circle. It was the Wayside Inn. There were 3 diners that we patronized, usually very late at night. The Parkway Diner, The White Horse Diner, and the 3rd one was on Route 1 near Princeton - it's still there. They were frequent stops after late movies at RKO Theaters and drive-ins. I also remember a Polynesian restaurant in Cherry Hill where we went after a prom. Another prom place was across the Delaware in New Hope, PA. Chez Odette's. After Odette died, they dropped the Chez (house of). Last I saw, it was for sale. Right on the river. Once I had my own family, I was more interested in quality ingredients than restaurants - that's why I so loved Duffield's Farm. Best produce by a million miles.
