Best place to eat for Mom in NYC

I come to you with a request:
My mother is visiting me in NYC this weekend, and every time she comes she insists we find a new, inexpensive, restaurant to try.

Let me paint a picture-
We're looking for good, solid, food but ambiance is very important. It must be comfortable. We stumbled into the Gramercy Park spot, Friend of a Farmer, once and she was thrilled. But she has a soft spot for thai, so don't think it needs to be limited to homestyle fare.

I live in the UES, and since quality is difficult to find here I am tempted to try Square Meal (Ed just reviewed). But $30 entrees are on the igh side of my definition of "inexpensive".

Can you provide spots you've found to be a hit with mom? Preferably in Manhattan, but I'd go to the other boroughs for the right place.

Thank you,
K

My mom loved Veselka...and what about somewhere trendy and fun (but with good food) like Cafeteria?

hey...if your mom likes thai food and you're looking for a very unusual atmosphere with a pool in the middle of the restaurant and a huge buddha sitting in the middle, why not take her to williamsburg and eat at: sea.

great prices, clubby atmosphere, live dj after a certain time. weekends can be busy, best to arrive around 6:30 or so.

my mom always takes everyone out for dinner to celebrate her birthday and we go to sea all the time.

My mom loves Blue Water Grill in Union Square. We go there whenever she comes to visit me, which is 3-4 times a year. It has a jazz room where we like to sit sometimes and other times we like to sit on the balcony that overlooks union square so we can people watch. It is reasonably priced too and I always have a very good meal there.

I like Kefi also (Greek food), but if you want Thai, you should think about Pam Real Thai Encore on 47th. It's the same amazing food as the 49th street Pam Real Thai, but the ambiance is much more chic.

Max in the East Village and Da Andrea in the West Village... Both cheap yummy Italian... You can't go wrong.
