Are foodies Democrats or Republicans?
Alright, alright, I know it's not "polite" to bring up politics in a venue otherwise reserved for lovely and polite food chatter, but c'mon! Isn't anyone curious?
There are a whole lot of foodies on the Serious Eats site and I was hoping to conduct some kind of half-assed study as to how many of us in here are democrats or republicans.
Some people would classify this as "personal" information and I'm sure I may catch some flack for how "inappropriate" this post is, but wouldn't it be interesting to find that a great number of foodies on this site are leaning a particular way?
Don't freak out, I'll start:
Hi, my name is PumpkinBear. I suck at baking (though I try) and I love cooking ...almost as much as I love Barack Obama. I'm a registered democrat who's praying to god that this country sees a major shift in power come November.
Alright, who's next?

Hi, my name is Timothy (aka FFC) and I think we're screwed no matter who wins.
FastFoodCritic at 5:11AM on 10/14/08
Hello.
My name is Karen. AKA foodvox, Barry Fig, Katerina la Vermintz, BranstonPICKLE, Moira Tuscanaro, Carrot Top and Ren Bejtman.
I think it's boring to simply learn what political party one 'belongs' to, aside from being devisive in ways that do not matter unless one is trying to start a campaign for their own group (as it allows the subsequent wordie not foodie rhetoric).
The world to me divides into three groups - gentle souls, fighting souls, and Pomeranians (or 'those who bark').
I think this is a Pomeranian topic.
foodvox at 6:57AM on 10/14/08
I can be considered a conservative liberal or a liberal conservative...and agree with FFC. I'll throw another no-no into the mix and say I am agnostic.
Speaking of Pomeranians - have you seen how expensive pomegranite juice is? Ouch!
Cassaendra at 7:18AM on 10/14/08
I'm Chrissy. aka sweethunibabi.
I'm 20 year old college student, and among the minority here...I lean conservatively.
However, I can't say I thoroughly fit into either of the categories. I suppose I may be moderate then. My concern regarding the election is just that everyone goes out and votes. I'm not going to preach about who will screw up less, just that one should always be informed about who and what they are casting a vote for.
I am excited though, this is my first election :)
sweethunibabi at 7:35AM on 10/14/08
I'm a progressive, which basically means I am farther to the left than the Dems but vote for them hopefully every time. It's hard to imagine a genuine progressive being elected at the presidential level, given the unbelievable expense of running a campaign, which means the candidates end up in hock to corporate interests...but there are some exciting Senate races happening this year. It'll be a doozy of an election day.
Bringing it back to the topic - it's disappointing that neither major candidate has expressed a clear plan for reforming our food system, despite the increasing public interest in such reform.
producestories at 7:43AM on 10/14/08
I'm a registered Democrat, but am I more liberal than mos of the party.
KarynMC at 7:54AM on 10/14/08
Also, too tired to type coherently this morning.
KarynMC at 7:54AM on 10/14/08
I agree with FFC.

Cassaendra at 7:18AM on 10/14/08
The only thing to do is to grow your own. Pomeranians and pomegranites.
Or at the least buy locally.
Braising is best.
foodvox at 8:24AM on 10/14/08
I'm registered independent, and I agree w/FFC too..... :-(
mepolo at 8:24AM on 10/14/08
Hi I'm Katie from Ohio and neither a Democrat or a Republican but I never vote Republican because I don't support their basic Party platform. I suppose it would have a little something to do with that whole Women's Rights thing.
To link this to food, I'm thinking of throwing myself an election night party. Chicago dogs and maybe some Goose Island! Anyone else?
earlybirdkate at 8:30AM on 10/14/08
@FFC AMEN!
huneybumper at 8:43AM on 10/14/08
Hi I'm izatryt and I also agree with FFC. That said, what would you vote for? A Burger? or A Dog?
izatryt at 9:04AM on 10/14/08
My name is also Timothy and I support FastFoodCritic message.
bravian at 9:13AM on 10/14/08
I am a registered Democrat and I strongly support Obama. I'm really enthusiastic about his election and I really don't like the sort of reflexive 'oh we're all screwed' mentality, which seems to foster inaction--basically the more hopeless you talk and the less you act, the more corrupt politicians get, feeding off of our cynicism and lack of political mobilization.
HeartofGlass at 9:20AM on 10/14/08
@Heart~There will definitely be voting action in our house. The problem is we do not have strong candidates representing either party this election. That does cause distress and for some a greater feeling of hopelessness.
izatryt at 9:37AM on 10/14/08
Hi! My name's Laurel and so far I've voted Democratic, as I will be this election. And you people make me sad talking about how screwed we are.
On that note, I was thinking of an election party, too-- champagne if things go one way, lots of champagne if things go another.
@izatryt, I'd vote for the burger. Obviously a higher quality piece of meat, and that's what I base all of my votes on. Meat quality.
Laurel E at 9:44AM on 10/14/08
This quote sums it up for me personally:
"My politics are that of the Our Father."
Forgot who said it but I've always loved it.
moibec at 9:48AM on 10/14/08
Proud member of "the vast right winged conspiracy"... that being said, I'm doing my absolute best trying to save the earth (except Tuscaloosa, AL.....blow tide ) by eating one black angus at a time. Now let's get back to food!
Pavlov at 10:35AM on 10/14/08
I'm optimistic that with change will come relief. I'm not going to say "It can't get any worse" because we proved that wrong last time.
Good or bad - this will likely be the largest percentage voter turnout in history - for whatever reason drives the voter. That's about the brightest spot in this whole election - less apathy.
My name is Chiffonade and I approved this message.
therealchiffonade at 10:35AM on 10/14/08
Hi. This is Josdean, aka Jocelyn. I totally agree with FFC. And to those of you who are dissing our gloomy gus attitude, I think the point we're trying to make is that with all of the educated, economically savy individuals in this country, how in the world has this pool been whittled down to these two candidates? When I vote (and I will), I more than likely will be voting AGAINST one person as oppossed to voting FOR the other.
@Iz - Definitely the burger, but let's make it good old AMERICAN kobe beef!
Josdean at 11:00AM on 10/14/08
So, Im Chelle, 33, NE Ohio and as we speak Joe Biden is about 5 miles away from me giving a big rah rah lets win Ohio speech. Save it.
Im a registered Dem, although I will say that I did vote for Bush the FIRST time around...(hanging my head in shame...what a douche bag!). I do, however, think Im voting for Obama, mostly because I don't think this country will have a clue what to do with a black President. (I am as white as the driven snow, for the record). If the laugh factor from every racist organization stirring up riots at the White House isn't comedy enough,(assuming Obama wins) I'll just look back on the idiocy of McCain and his oh so influential plans for the USA. (yet another douche bag).
FFC is completely on point...doesn't matter who is running it, they always manage to fuck it up.
ChelleyD01 at 11:00AM on 10/14/08
I have to add to my previous brief comment. Having a realistic understanding that we're screwed either way does not necessarily imply apathy or a "do nothing" attitude. Wrong assumption. Josdean said it well.
holdthemayo at 11:05AM on 10/14/08
Perky? Perky?? PERKY! I guess she isn't home right now. Anyway, I left her a note to check in right away.

Hi, I'm Tokyo Rosa and I live in a swing state. I don't cook so much as I zap things in the microwave to eat while I peruse food porn websites like this one.
I'm registered Independent, but have never, ever voted republican. Of course I voted (early) for Obama, but in a better world, I'd've cast my vote for Hillary Clinton. If Sarah Palin gets into office, I'm leaving the planet with Tina Fey.
Tokyorosa at 11:13AM on 10/14/08
My name is Jamie, aka joyy, and just as I did in the last presidential election (which was my first), I will be voting for the lesser of two evils :)
I've also been told that the frequency with which I make my own granola places me firmly in the raging liberal hippy camp, and I'm not really offended by it.
joyyy at 11:24AM on 10/14/08
My name is Maureen, and I'm Canadian - so we cut you to the chase - I just came back from voting in our 40th federal election.......
And I voted Green because I'm heartily tired of the Conservatives and Liberals passing the torch back and forth!
Maureen at 11:39AM on 10/14/08
I'm a permanent resident, not a US citizen, but my OH is a registered Democrat, does it count? I have more and more respect for Obama every time I see him speak, even though, admittedly, it maybe little things that "speak to me" (like "we don't need this" yesterday, spoken to a booing crowd - I have a great distaste for booing crowds, no matter what side they boo for or against. I certainly appreciated how Obama handled his).
Apropos of pomegranate juice - it's a real shame it's so dear, as it's my absolutely most favourite juice in the world!
brooke29 at 11:41AM on 10/14/08
I'm sorry if the "cynical " tude bothers some ppl but in what i have observed through the years, you can vote for someone that is honest and hold high morals, has a great platform etc, but like the joke, its a whole other kind of hell after you vote. Maybe we should fund a study on the air and water in Washington DC, maybe thats what turns otherwise decent human beings into politicians (in other words lying cheating ********bags)
I'll shut up now ;-)
huneybumper at 11:41AM on 10/14/08
Hiya, my name is Traveller, aka the Baking Traveller, and I do not belong to any party. I tend to vote on the issues, which right now makes me extremely undecided and I am paying attention to it all and reading about it all. I see potential positives and negatives on both sides, and I have a feeling that I will not make that final decision until I am standing in the voting booth. This has been very tough for me, since my parents are both *very* Republican and insist on trying to bias me at every turn. I just want the truth....wait, we can't handle the truth.
Also, burgers, as long as there is plenty of homemade ketchup and mustard to put on them, and homemade buns to put them in!
@FFC: I sadly agree.
And I approve this message.
Traveller at 12:10PM on 10/14/08
I'm with Joyy, I've always been a "lesser of two evils" kind of gal. I'm registered independent, have NEVER voted republican, and think that Sarah Palin is the most terrifying thing that's ever happened to American politics, second only to George Bush.
As a rule I don't trust politicians and tend to vote on social issues, but I've been paying more attention lately because I think this is an incredibly important election. We might be screwed either way, but I fully think we'll collapse if that woman is put in any position of power.
That being said, Obama seems like more of a foodie, doesn't he? Mccain is kind of pot roast and pruney, if you ask me.
embolini9 at 12:16PM on 10/14/08
Hello, my name is savecara, and I do not believe in a two-party system. It means too many marginalized people as well as with-us-or-against-us politics, which often doesn't leave room for healthy debate but does create angry, raging mobs.
I'm voting with hope for change, though I don't believe real change lies in any presidential pick. Presidents have to raise taxes, cut important funding at times, and make unpopular decisions. It helps if they surround themselves with smart, qualified advisors and don't polarize the congress against them or itself. Beyond that, I don't have many expectations.
I deleted my rant on a certain vp nominee. Let's get back to talking about what food to make for fall and what's the crappiest trick-or-treat candy.
savecara at 12:19PM on 10/14/08
I am labled in the same camp of joyyy... the raging hippy liberal camp, earthy crunchy birkenstock wearer...
I recently moved to small town vermont from Minneapolis and am defiinitely voting democrat... I think I would be blacklisted from my family if I ever voted replulican... I come from a long line of southern democrats.

Hi, I'm CookiePie, a devoted baker and passionate cook (not always successful, but I keep trying).
Also a proud super-liberal (why "liberal" is a bad word I'll never understand) Democrat with a big bleeding heart. Sue me!
I get my hopes dashed over and over, but it seems to always regrow itself for each election. So I'm very much in support of Obama (and have done the volunteering and donating and all that), who I think is absolutely a strong candidate with a great brain and the right attitude and ideas for this particularly bad moment in our history.
I'm also not getting into the subject of Sarah Palin, because I try to just keep my mouth shut when I don't have anything nice to say.
CookiePie at 1:24PM on 10/14/08
Hi, I'm Deb Schiff.
What a great topic, albeit off-topic for Serious Eats. I'm surprised no one's discussing what each of the parties offer folks like us in terms of food policy (imports, exports, safety, labeling, food for fuel, etc.)
I was an Independent for many years, but felt I was losing out by not participating in the primaries, especially back when Bill Bradley was running. So, I registered Democrat so I could vote for Bill. What a disappointment when he bailed. Oh well.
As some others have said, no matter what happens, I think we'll all be hard pressed (as opposed to cold pressed) to escape continued increased food prices and taxes. On the other hand, I hope that the person who wins puts into place policies that make organic foods less expensive than those not grown organically. We shouldn't have to pay so much more to eat healthier and have less impact on our groundwater.
Getting off my soapbox now.
My blogs are: Altered Plates and Here and There.

McCain is the wrinkly old chemical filled hot dog that has been rotating on the roller thing at your gas station since time immemorial, served on a stale bun with a plastic packet of relish.
Obama is a big juicy grass fed burger cooked medium rare, topped with cheddar cheese on a fresh butter toasted potato bun, served with a side of onion rings, cole slaw and a chocolate shake with whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Gobama, without question. It's the only way this country is going to move forward.
Down with apathy! Please vote, whatever your political flavor - - nothing changes (except the stock market) without the will of the people. It's supposed to be what life in a democracy is about.

I got my feet wet (or wrapped in concrete?) in local politics in South Jersey and I saw, heard and learned a lot that shocked me to the core. If local is so crooked I don't dare even imagine what happens on a national level. We had Mafia influences and I was advised to hide my family elsewhere if the teachers went on strike. Scary stuff. I am on the fence, but will definitely vote.
One thing I just learned - Tina Fey graduated from Upper Darby High School (suburb of Philadelphia). FYI for those from this area. How 'bout that! I think I'll go make some baked Alaska. I can see Russia from my house! *wink*

Hi I'm Hélène, and it's election day here in Canada. My current Member of Parliament is from the New Democratic Party (about 3 parties to the left of the US Democrats) Likely he will be re-elected. I'm still not sure who I'm voting for but better decide soon! (polls close at 21:30) I'm very socially liberal, and fiscally moderate.
@PerkyMac - please remember your Ottawa roots, and don't vote for the Republicans! They are so NOT Canadian...
We'll be happy to absorb any disillusionned leftys if that absurd McCain/Palin ticket takes it.
PeanutButter at 5:11PM on 10/14/08
@PeanutButter ~ I got to tour the Prime Minister's residence Gorffwysfa, when I was a tweenager. My mother's cousin was his chauffeur. I remember the gardens and the guards more than the house. From the time frame it would have been Diefenbaker or Pearson. I remember flirting with the guard on an extremely hot summer day and trying to get some reaction (it totally looked like he had my grandfather's shaving brush in his hat). Anyway, he totally ignored us, until I piped up with, "Wouldn't a Dow go good now?" That was the tag line in a beer commercial. I swear he glanced at me and the faintest of smiles crossed his face. It was a highlight of the summer and my sister and brother still remember it, too.
So, are you saying that Barry O'Bamma (made him Irish....hehe) is Canadian?.

I'm a registered republican who votes for dems (maybe 30% of the time) when I feel they are better for the job. I don't care for Obama's socialism but I think he'd be a great neighbor. I don't care for McCain's personality but I think he would be better for overall leadership. * sigh *

I don't know anything about anything, but I believe there is a wrong and a right, a stupid and a smart.
Its all just wrong and stupid right now.
terabithia at 11:08PM on 10/14/08
I'm registered independent. I feel both parties are too free with our tax money, too greedy in taking away our rights, and too lenient on crime. I could be libertarian in that I believe in the individual's right to privacy, and the right to carry on in one's house as they please, so long as it doesn't harm anyone. I'm a financial conservative, in that I believe both parties have mistaken us, the taxpayers, for a credit card wit no limit. I'm with FFC in that we will be screwed either way, just in different ways.

I'm Amanda, aka PinkCupcake, a passionate baker and 27 year-old stay-at-home mom (my BA and MA are in political science, so as you can imagine, I take a great interest in our political system). I'm a registered Republican, and like Josdean, for me it'll be more of a vote against one than for the other. That being said, I'm going with McCain, though I'm disappointed that we couldn't have done better with the representatives of each party. Neither of them really does a whole lot for me; my social conservatism pushes me to make the choice that I'm making. As has already been said by many, please go out and vote, whoever you happen to support. It really is important to make your voice heard.
And I'll take a burger with chili and cheese, please (Beacon Drive-In style - Spartanburg, SC represent!) :)
PinkCupcake at 1:30AM on 10/15/08
@izatryt ~ I think you need to set up your grill with kobe burgers and all the fixin's, including mushrooms, cheese, onions, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup, BROWN mustard (haha LPC), mayo, relish, (what did I forget Adam?) lobster or crab for me haha, fresh rolls or grilled cheese donut panini and serve them to citizens (especially SEers) after we vote. I'll gladly help. We need to get rid of nonchalance and realize we have the freedoms we have because we have the right and exercise it. If you are eligible and don't vote, try a long trip to Cuba or North Korea for a few years. Everything is rough right now, but we are still a blessed nation. Let's keep it that way - VOTE and enjoy a hamburger, too!

I'm Jackie aka jbeach. Registered Dem.
Here's my little piece:
So many talking heads on tv and radio make our ears bleed daily and the words in newspapers and magazines go around and around ('spin' is so accurate a term for it), but reading pieces like The">http://www.newyorker.com/talk/comment/2008/10/13/081013taco_talk_editors">The New Yorker essay endorsing Barack Obama made me feel validated -- my thoughts and feelings and perceptions are not unjustified -- there are intelligent, well-connected, savvy political people in the biz who feel exactly as we do.
I am a humanitarian. I am a liberal. I will not be ashamed of it. I know that the world isn't going to miraculously turn on its axis and deliver fairness and equality. I believe many systems and mechanisms and most of all, perceptions, are completely backwards and I have no clue how these issues can be fixed, how to ask people to care more about one another, about everyone, all of our brothers and sisters across this breathtakingly beautiful planet that we call home, yet are hellbent on destroying. But I also know that I want to look forward and see some light ahead. My knowledge of political matters is pretty meager, but I know enough to ascertain that while politicians are of a certain breed, they can't all be bad people. I'll never be one to say voting doesn't matter and the world's going to sh*t anyway so who cares. I'm not saying Barack Obama and Joe Biden are saints who are going to save the world. I'm just saying that I care about the future and I believe these 2 people are more aligned with my values.
jbeach at 10:47AM on 10/15/08
I'm Lynne, 30 years old and I work in TV. I'm perpetually liberal-leaning and will be voting for Obama. I read the entire plan for change PDF on his web site, and I like the direction he's headed.
After checking policies, I vote according to which candidate I'd most like to have as a co-worker or boss, and Obama wins there, as he did versus Clinton when I was making that decision. I sort of liked McCain circa 2000, but this year I think he's either managed his campaign badly or has been bullied into letting other people run his campaign badly - either way, I don't feel confident in his ability to manage.
I'm really glad this community can have this discussion without resorting to name calling and insults. Unfortunately, it's not something I've seen much of on the web these days.

If you are at all interested in seeing change in the way public schools feed our children, consider this: Alice Waters recently spoke about her Edible Schoolyard and Michele Obama was in the audience. Word is, she is a supporter of Waters' approach.. If the Edible Schoolyard approach were to receive federal funding, we would see great changes in the way people eat..

@izzy's mama - thank you for pointing that out! I didn't know that was an interest of hers, though it makes perfect sense. I spent a week as a culinary volunteer in New Orleans last year (with this amazing organization) and one of our days was spent with Edible Schoolyard children there. It is an incredibly worthy program, one that every community could benefit from. There were children who had zero concept of where their food came from, but who knew what all the numbers of the McDonald's "value menu" represented. Those kids were learning how to grow vegetables, how to cook simple but healthy meals -- all in a completely participatory, hands-on way -- immeasurably valuable information they'll have for the rest of their lives.

Definitely hoping Obama wins....

First, @FFC nailed it. Pathetic as voter turnout is, it's a wonder more haven't given up on it.
In addition, it's pretty clear to me that this poll will indicate the political leanings of Serious Eaters, but not those of foodies as a group. In general, I find Internet forum participants to be disproportionately young(er than I am), and, taken as a whole, young people certainly tend to be much more liberal.
There are so many kinds of foodies. In my world, foodies are those who have the resources to travel, dine in high-end restaurants, enjoy premium wines, entertain a lot, and buy and experiment with expensive specialty ingredients. They are more likely to be a bit older, much more moderate, and generally have somewhat conservative leanings. And most of the people I know are way too busy to play on Internet forums! So, I guess it depends a lot on what type of foodie you're talking to.
Me? Well, I'm non-partisan, registered as such, and have been since my first election. I've never found a party with a platform that properly reflects my position on all the issues. Of course, I also feel that many of the so-called issues really have no place in politics. Furthermore, I've never seen a candidate who really toes his/her party line. So parties strike me as pointless and irrelevant.
Sadly, on the rare occasion I see a candidate I'd actually support, it is impossible to vote for him/her as our two-party system means 99.9% of votes for non-major candidates will be wasted votes. Such a shame.
I don't think I have ever voted FOR anybody in my life. My vote is ALWAYS against somebody. I.e., spend a lot of time figuring out whose agenda I think is most harmful to our nation, then try to cast a vote that is most likely to keep that candidate out of office. I've definitely voted for candidates from both parties, but Republicans have probably gotten my vote more frequently.
I'm definitely firmly planted in the moderate camp. I have decidedly conservative leanings on governmental and fiscal matters, but not so much on social and individual issues. Although I do not consider myself a Libertarian, my beliefs most closely mirror that philosophy -- I want less nanny-state big government, more individual accountability and personal ownership, little or no socialism, an overhauled tax code that lets Americans keep more of their own hard-earned money so they can spend it as they see fit, etc. I'm a huge Founding Fathers groupie, and strongly believe we need to get back to the governmental fundamentals they put forth.
No hot dogs for me. On election day, after I vote against Obama, I'll be enjoying a cheeseburger, about 1/3 to 1/2 pound, medium-rare to medium, with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles with just a hint of mayo and mustard. And to do my part for the economy, I think it'll be a $16-burger from Houston's!
I think if we had a candidate who was a foodie, it sure couldn't hurt!
LoCo at 1:00PM on 10/15/08
From a Democratic family in Chicago so I've known Barack Obama and seen first-hand the change he promises. Which is why like every other analytical, bi-partisan, tax-paying Illinoisian I know, I'm proud to vote for John McCain in November.

I am very new to Serious Eats. I have been reading this thread and feel comfortable enough to post my first comment.
I come from a large family of conservative minds. I have travelled the country and met wonderful people of like minds and wonderful people who's views are the polar opposite of mine. I have looked extensively at both candidates with an open mind. I have even vacillated at times. At the end of the day, I truly believe our government has forgotten the goals of our Founding Fathers and I am disgusted with the lack of personal responsibility on the part of so many Americans. Like LoCo, who so eloquently stated a position I can not help but agree with, I will be voting against Obama on November 2.
Also, It will be a juicy Medium cooked burger with aged English cheddar, caramelized red onions, a big fat slice of beefsteak tomato, Romaine lettuce and a bit of dijon mustard. Because it is election day, I will treat myself to a side of sweet potato fries with a vanilla bourbon dipping sauce. If I have any room after that, I will consider something swarthy from the dessert tray.
My name is Leah and I approved this message. Get out and vote! It is your Voice and your Choice.

Finally, I am going to join the minority and say that I will probably be voting for McCain this Election Day. Although both parties as groups scare me, I feel that I can trust McCain to act in the best interests of the country, and that he has the experience and wisdom to know what to do.
LoCo and I share many of the same beliefs when it comes to the size and role of government, according to her post.
Also, yay Serious Eaters being able to reveal their beliefs without letting that get in the way of their shared love of food!

McCain acting in the best interests of our country??? You have got to be kidding right? McCain has always acted and will always act, given the opportunity, in the best interests of his lobbyist buddies and the top tier wealthy elites. This whole sub-prime mortgage mess is directly related to McCain and his buddy, and campaign advisor Phil Gramm Just the other day he added another lobbyist to his staff, a certain William Timmons who in 1992 was a lobbyist for Saddam Hussein. Yes, THAT Saddam Hussein.
And his VP Sarah Palin actively campaigned for the Alaskan Independence Party, an armed militia that advocates the use of violence and whose leader Joe Vogler openly professed his hatred for the US. He was murdered while trying to buy plastic explosives from an ex-con. She is a racist who quoted Westbrook Pegler at the GOP convention. My favorite Pegler quote is:
“[It is] clearly the bounden duty of all intelligent Americans to proclaim and practice bigotry.”
I could keep going on but seriously, this all pretty much common knowledge. This is really who you want in charge of our country?
Vote for McCain thinking you're representing the best interests of your country, and you are just fooling yourselves.

I wanted Fred Thompson to be president but he wasn't up to the garbage required to run. I love Sarah Palin.
Obama is the candidate of High Taxes (change) and Wishful Thinking (hope)
McCain is the last defense against socialism and terrorists so I will vote for him.
If you think Obama is so cool I am not going to change your mind. I do not want what he is really going to give us.
eatorama at 12:17PM on 10/16/08
@simon, well said
You forgot to mention that Sarah Palin has absolutely no idea what the f*ck she's doing, and will most likely not do anything notable as a VP except delegalize abortion, lower gun control laws, and start onshore drilling for oil, whereas Biden, though lacking in cutesy catch-phrases, has decades of experience in politics, is well-versed in world diplomacy, and will be able to assist and voice valid opinions on the serious issues our country is facing today, as a VP should.
Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to this country, and an embarrassment to my gender.
To relate this to food, I think she's more of a twinkie than a pack of sno-balls.

Hi, I'm CulinaryRabbit and I'm a professional software geek who is an eco-conscious, fiscally conservative libertarian. I would liked to have seen Ron Paul or Mitt Romney nominated on the Republican ticket, but alack, alas.
People always assume I'm liberal because I'm female, young, and not white, and I haven't met a single conservative, fiscal or otherwise, since moving to Seattle, particularly not in the food scene. But that's ok since I don't care about politics on a personal level; I just want the government away from my food choices, out of my wallet, and out of my home.
culinaryrabbit at 8:40PM on 10/18/08
I'm shocked at the number of foodies who say they are voting for McCain, especially after Cindy plagiarized all those recipes, not once, but did it again even after she got caught. The McCains strike me as a deeply dysfunctional family--angry father, anorexic, face-lifted mother, overweight daughters. It would be so refreshing to see the Obama family in the White House.
And I'm deeply impatient with folks who say they're not voting or throwing away their vote on a third party candidate because "they're all crooks". To me that's just a sign of intellectual laziness.
I haven't been so excited about a candidate since I was a college student in the 70s as I am about Obama, to the point that I'm volunteering for the campaign, donating money, and have been hosting out of state campaign workers in my home since April.

Hi, my name is Jean (expat39520), I love to cook, and I'm a Barak Obama fan. Well, not initially. I voted for Hil in the primaries, was undecided for a time after she lost, but returned to the Democratic fold when McCain (his skin has the color and texture of the Pillsbury Doughboy's, doesn't it?) chose that ridiculous woman as his running mate. Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama cinched it for me this weekend.

As a truly independent thinker who shuns the conformity forced on America's tastes by the corporate chain restaurants, I also shun the mainstream corporate parties. (Just as Darden's owns both Olive Garden and Red Lobster, the Republicrats are just two versions of the same old deal.) My hardest decision this election years was whether to support Libertarian Bob Barr or the Constitution Party's Chuck Baldwin, since I am a constitutionalist libertarian! They are both like the family owned restaurants that give you a real choice of authentic cuisine, not the version designed by the marketing department.

Is it possible that you have never in your entire life come into contact with anyone who has done something illegal, immoral or just plain wrong? Come to that, if you want to talk about supporting terrorism, let's talk about Sarah and Todd's close relationship with the fine folks at the Alaskan Independence Party -- secession anyone?

Obama is the perfect example that through hard work, dedication and higher education you can realize the American dream of owning a lovely home in an upscale neighborhood and run for the President of the United States. I have to worry about his "spread the wealth" position. It conflicts with the American dream. This election reminds me of our food recipes and our personal recipes for life...."if you send a ship out expect one to come in" and the food is only as good as the ingredients you put in. We should all be held accountable for the choices we make for ourselves. The sub-prime mortgages are an excellent example of making bad choices. Many of us did not get into a sub-prime mortgage and there was a very good reason why...it would've been a bad choice. Yet, as taxpayers we now have to take responsibility for those who did. Each candidate will make big promises that they will never keep. It reminds me of being given an old family recipe only to discover that a few ingredients were left out....key ingredients...necessary to making it work. When you go out and vote keep in mind that neither candidate is going to make a noticeable change in your life. Maintaining a strong military force is vital to our continued safety against terrorism and holding our strong position as a world leader. If we don't maintain that now we will put our children and grandchildren in a place of constant uncertainty. We still live in the best country in the world. We have our problems but they, in no way, compare to what other countries are experiencing with socialized medicine and a "spreading of the wealth" mentality. Everyone wants to live in America and we all need to remember why that is. It is our responsibility to vote for the candidate who will not take the American dream away from us and give it to others. I'll vote on November 4th for the candidate who will protect us across the board. I will vote for John McCain. He has the permanet injuries to remind him of what a great country he was fighting for. And....he is still fighting to make it better and stronger.
dianeb at 1:49PM on 10/20/08
John McCain has permanent injuries because he wasn't properly trained as a fighter pilot, putting himself and his whole crew at risk. He wasn't trained because in addition to graduating at the bottom of his class from military school, from which he would have been expelled if not for the intervention of his parents, after joining the navy he chose to spend his time drinking and womanizing when he should have been in training. He then used connections to get assigned to the mission from which he didn't return. Men who knew him back then say they wouldn't want him anywhere near that red button because of his temperament. On top of his temperament there are his age, health, and medications to consider.
beckyleeprice at 2:22PM on 10/20/08
I guess I can take back what I said earlier about the tone of this thread...
Junie at 2:47PM on 10/20/08
If a person has lived long enough to experience failure and success only then will they understand that through the failures you learn first hand "what not to do." All the more reason for the United States to maintain a well trained military force. No one has all of the answers but the one thing that we, as Americans, must embrace is taking responsibility for our choices and moving forward to correct those mistakes. I'm not against Obama. I believe him to be a charismatic young man who has a dream. He, too, has a past to include things he would like to go back and change. We all do.
dianeb at 3:01PM on 10/20/08
Since when has Obama said he doesn't want to maintain a well trained military force? Obama has shown himself to be a person who learns from his mistakes and grows as a person. McCain keeps making the same ones over and over again. I am someone who takes character very seriously and if you analyze the campaigns it's very clear which candidate has exhibited more character and which one has betrayed whatever principles he ever had in order to win the election.
beckyleeprice at 3:13PM on 10/20/08
If Mccain is so set on taking responsibility for his (and, coincidentally, Bush's) choices and moving forward, why can he offer nothing but convoluted rhetoric about patriotism in his speeches? Solid, practical plans would give him more credibility. Repeatedly stating that you're a maverick and trying to blackball your competitor while he attempts to present ideas for a progressive future is hardly promising.
embolini9 at 3:17PM on 10/20/08
Your opinion has been noted.
dianeb at 3:24PM on 10/20/08
So...we've covered politics...anyone want to move on to religion? :)
embolini9 at 3:31PM on 10/20/08
The trouble is that the two topics are so entwined in the Republican party that quite frankly I'm even more frightened by the American Taliban as represented by Sarah Palin than I am by the Taliban in the middle east. I am one who does not want anyone else's religion in my bedroom, doctor's office, or kids' school. I am even uncomfortable with all this "God bless America!" that we hear in the speeches of all the candidates, as if they're all trying to prove who is the better Christian. I say religion is, and should be, a private business.
beckyleeprice at 3:43PM on 10/20/08
In relating all of this to food...ahem...there must be 25 recipes for making chicken soup...and none of them are wrong. Colin Powell, a former republican and strong military supporter, made a good decision over the weekend to support Obama especially if Obama wins on November 4th. I find comfort in that and chicken soup. As far as religion, we live in a country where we are free to pray in any house of worship. Go Red, White and Blue!!
dianeb at 3:52PM on 10/20/08
Sad that this thread has gotten so vile with name calling from the left (go back and look at who is doing it) the left is neither progressive nor liberal they preach tolerance but just can't seem to practice it . I was around when Saul Alinski, William Ayres and the rest of the hardline communists attempting to spread their doctrine and now this democratic candidate supports their doctrine of marxism and wants to impose it on the "FREE" tax-paying citizens of this country. And put an end to the American Dream.
I am PROUD TO BE A REPUBLICAN
I am proud to be an American (for now)
shipwreck at 3:57PM on 10/20/08
We already have "socialism" in this country: it's called corporate welfare. Only the tax-cheating CEOs of fortune 500 companies get to benefit from it though. The rest of us, the people who work and actually do pay our taxes, are shelling out so that the rich get richer. McCain is all for that kind of socialism. It's the trickle up theory of economics. Much like the way a pickpocket works, you distract your victims with bogus non issues while you stick your hands in their pockets to snatch their wallets.
Supporting our veterans and the US military? That's funny, look at McCain's senate voting record and you will see some interesting stuff:
September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments.
May 2006: McCain voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.
April 2006: McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.
March 2006: McCain voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.
March 2004: McCain once again voted for abusive tax loopholes over veterans when he voted against creating a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans' medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating abusive tax loopholes.
October 2003: McCain voted to table an amendment by Senator Dodd that called for an additional $322,000,000 for safety equipment for United States forces in Iraq.
April 2003: McCain urged other Senate members to table a vote (which never passed) to provide more than $1 billion for National Guard and Reserve equipment in Iraq related to a shortage of helmets, tents, bullet-proof inserts, and tactical vests.
What other myths about McCain would you like me to debunk for you?
simon at 4:14PM on 10/20/08
shipwreck, please explain in what way Obama is a Marxist. Is Warren Buffet a Marxist? Do you even know what a Marxist is? And who exactly is name-calling?
PS: Even "Joe the Plumber" (whose real name is Sam, is not an independent but is a registered Republican, is not licensed to be a plumber in Ohio, only makes about $45k and never intended to buy that business he was talking about, AND also owes about $3000 in back taxes) had to admit that under Obama's plan, he would be paying less taxes than under McCain's... Just a few more facts for yo to ignore.
simon at 4:27PM on 10/20/08
I don't even know where to start with shipwreck's comment, it's so illogical except to say that it's a good example of what I mean when I say that I find the prospect of the American Taliban under McCain/Palin more frightening than the Taliban in the middle east. You do realize, shipwreck, that out of all the candidates, Obama best exemplifies the American Dream, working his way through his own efforts from a poor childhood to where he is now. And before you say "affirmative action" he didn't even indicate on his Harvard application that he was a member of an ethnic minority. McCain is the product of nepotism and if he would have had to rely on his own talent probably wouldn't even have gotten as far as Joe the plumber.
beckyleeprice at 4:29PM on 10/20/08

izatryt at 4:30PM on 10/20/08
dianeb, do you have a point?
simon at 4:32PM on 10/20/08
My point is that we don't have any idea how Obama would've voted on these same issues. He simply voted "present." How do you explain that?
dianeb at 4:44PM on 10/20/08
I would love to talk about sex, but again, the politicians just won't stay out of my sex life! I happen to have a gay son...
dianeb, until you really understand what voting "present" means I don't think you're qualified to comment on it; Obama was there and involved, whereas McCain has been absent more often than present in Washington, too busy hosting his barbecues, I guess.
beckyleeprice at 4:45PM on 10/20/08

dianeb at 4:54PM on 10/20/08
If active duty personnel think, by a margin of six to one, that Obama is the right man for the job, then I think that says something. Not to mention a certain republican, former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, and secretary of state, who thinks he is more than qualified to be commander in chief...
simon at 5:07PM on 10/20/08
There is no difference between Dems and Repubs. They all serve the same agenda - stay in power and get richer. Abortion, gun control, the enviroment, and gay marriage are just shiney objects they use to distract us while they steal us blind. Rather than fixing the country they make under the table deals with Big Oil and Wall Street that ensure when the country colapses they will be taken care of. Neither party truly cares about anything but power. I do a lot of write in votes. To look at my absentee ballot for this year you would think Charles Barkley filled it out. I can't help it, I like the guy.
WannabeTVchef at 7:55PM on 10/20/08
I'm haglered, I am a conservative republican. I bake good bread and the world's best cinnamon rolls. I also make the best hamburgers and smoke some of the best bbq ribs and brisket. I also make good grilled cheese sandwiches and decent chili. I cook a few other things but they are not worth mentioning.
I believe in conserving the practice of making and eating good food. I would not even be voting in this election if it were not for Sarah Palin. Amazing how much hatred the left can have for someone just because they have conservative values. There isn't much I disagree with Palin about so I guess the media and liberals hate me as much as they do her.
Anyway.... I do not care for McCain, I think he is a fence sitter. But I will vote for him only because he was smart enough to pick Palin for VP.
It seems if Barrack Hussein Obama (not so good pies by the way) gets elected we will all be eating ramen noodles because we will all have to redistribute whatever wealth we have to the government who knows how to spend it better than us..... ;-) You know it's true.
Long live Joe the Plumber and all the other working stiffs out there who know a bad recipe when they see one.
haglered at 10:50PM on 10/20/08
Unless you are already wealthy (making more than $250,000/year, in which case you really shouldn't be complaining) Obama will be giving you a better a tax break than McCain will. McCain is only after helping out his rich buddies.
If you are rich, then I have no sympathy for you, you haven't been paying your fair share. You've had your eight years of free ride, now it's time for you to behave like a responsible member of society again, especially since my guess is you are fond of wars. Wars are very, very expensive in case you haven't already noticed.
It's late, I'm not going to get into asking you specifically what it is you agree with Palin about so fervently. Other than the obvious of course: you think all muslims are terrorists, you hate gays, and think anyone who isn't categorically anti-abortion takes pleasure in killing babies. We can resume this elevating discussion tomorrow. Oh, and for the umpteenth time, "Joe the Plumber" is a phony.
simon at 12:00AM on 10/21/08
Let's see. If you make $50k in CA you probably pay about $12k in income taxes (somewhere around 25%). If you make $500k, you probably pay about $250k in income taxes (yes, you spent six months of the year working for the government).
That's a hell of a lot of money that could have been spent on extremely expensive restaurants, fine wines, high-end appliances and kitchen gadgets, etc. (imagine all the sales taxes and salaries that would have paid)... Just think of all the soup kitchens and food banks that would have liked to receive some of that money...
Yes, shame on those people who studied hard, never expected or took a handout, and worked their asses off to achieve some kind of financial stability and a better life for their families.
Damn those free rides...

Thank you, Simon, for all of your efforts.
I am 67 years old and my husband is ten years older. We have no children. We had a lot of fun in the 60' and 70's. He also worked hard at a job he loved, trying to make this a more just society. I worked hard at supporting him and our life together. We have been lucky in material terms. We've inherited little except china. WE HAVE NEVER MINDED PAYING TAXES. We owe it in return for our good fortune. The next generation has to be educated. Road and bridges have to be built and maintained. (I actually remember when all of these things happened). We must care for all of the gravely injured from this most recent war and the ones before. We have obligations. And there is no refuge in saying it was government who did it, not me.

Um, is anyone really deluded enough to think that after the bailout bill either candidate is going to be able to keep taxes down? Mccain might talk big, but he won't have a choice, it's a moot point.
@haglered - I'm sure you're a great cook, but the fact that you wholeheartedly support a woman who believes women should be forced to carry a fetus to term, EVEN in cases of rape or incest, AND that rape victims should be made to PAY for their own rape kits, and wants to lower gun control laws in a country where toddlers are shooting themselves with unlocked guns almost every week? Makes me really sad for you. If your daughter were raped, I'm sure you'd think twice about forcing her to carry and give birth to her rapist's child. Sarah Palin wouldn't.

LoCo, oh my lord, you are sooo right. How could I have been so rash. $250K after taxes is such an injustice. How can one possibly live on such a meager amount. I mean, that's only FIVE TIMES the average US income. Truly demeaning. And yes, you are right, the amount of income is directly proportional to the amount of work you put in. Those people working double shifts making $50k (before taxes) are such lazy bastards. They didn't pick their parents (or husbands) right, that's for sure.
Ok, sarcasm aside, let's look at your statement, shall we? How much money does that poor person making half a million dollars a year pay in Federal income taxes? Are you talking about the adjusted, taxable income? If so, you pay $154,074 in taxes if you are single, about $5k less if you're married. NOT $250k. The tax rate is 35%, not 50%. If you are paying another $100k in state taxes in CA, that's an issue you need to bring up with the Governator. Who happens to be a Republican, last time I checked... And again, that's on adjusted taxable income. If you're liable for $500k, that means your gross income is much much more. Making that kind of money, I'm sure you can afford a good accountant who gets your tax liability down as far as possible. Cry me a river, LoCo. A river of caviar.
Here are some interesting numbers:
War in Iraq: $1,000,000,000,000. There's no mistake there, all those zeroes are where they should be. That's what one trillion dollars looks like. For one trillion dollars, we could have had a pretty damn nice healthcare system, without having to raise LoCo's (or her husband's) taxes. One trillion dollars fixes lots of roads and bridges, builds schools, pays for teachers, develops new oil free energy technologies...
Finacial System Bailout: $1,800,000,000,000. Yup. One point eight trillion dollars. For those hard working top tier earners who don't expect a handout from the government. It's not a handout, it's a bailout. Rich people don't expect handouts from the government, right LoCo? Remind me again how that is capitalism, and not socialism for the privileged few who qualify? In capitalism, you are rewarded when you succeed, and punished when you fail. One point eight trillion dollars seems like one hell of a punishment. Please, punish me!
Welfare for poor (read: lazy?) people is unconscionable, but we sure as hell need corporate welfare for CEOs (and their wives) when their unchecked greed brings the world's financial system to it's knees, preventing people from getting car loans because the credit system is shot, and people's retirement accounts lose 50% in a month... We must keep these vital members of society flush, they have lots of expensive restaurants, vacations, wines, foods and kitchen gadgets and cars and houses to buy. Oh yeah, and after that, they'll donate some to soup kitchens and stuff. It helps bring their tax liability down...

shipwreck at 1:38PM on 10/21/08
I'm a registered Democrat, but I believe in voting for who I think would be the best leader for this great country of ours. That doesn't always mean it would be a Democrat, but this time that is definately the case! I have voted Republican in the past....Reagan.. years ago.
Just please everyone.....VOTE!! It is so IMPORTANT! If you don't vote...keep your mouth shut and don't even try to talk politics with me.
Comfortcook at 3:45PM on 10/21/08
Please don't hate me for being rich.
izatryt at 3:58PM on 10/21/08
Iz.... did you ever post your views, or have you just been commenting? Curious Eaters are curious!
nightowl at 4:09PM on 10/21/08
@shipwreck, first of all, YOU'RE the one that made this personal. I won't sink so low as to follow suit, but please, keep your hatred to yourself - political debates are one thing, but chill the fuck out.
Second of all, have you actually been reading any of these posts, and/or are you aware that it's republicans that are traditionally wealthy? If you find a trust fund for me, please, let me know, because I was raised by immigrants on a small family farm, and I've never seen a dime I didn't earn myself.

I was so proud this thread had maintained a tone of civility for so long -- let's get it back on track! A reminder: This is Serious Eats (not politics) and not the place for political debate, or personal attacks. Keep it civil and on topic or we'll close the thread.
Alaina Browne at 4:36PM on 10/21/08
@night ~ Why, am I breaking some sort of rule?
@Alaina ~ I was trying to keep everyone focused on burgers and dogs. Looks like that was lost somehow.....
izatryt at 5:11PM on 10/21/08
No rules broken. But I just scrolled through 120 comments to look for it, based on your "rich" comment. =)
Mmm, rich. Rich, creamy, hearty winter soups. Hurray!
nightowl at 5:38PM on 10/21/08
Well Owly ~ Here is the problem; I have the perfect life, a wonderful husband, a great family, even greater grandchildren, we make lots of money, we pay lots of taxes, we vote, we volunteer, we donate beaucoup bucks every year, we clean up after our dogs, we recycle, we use environmentally friendly cleaning products, we take reusable bags to the market, we support our local food banks, we are open-minded, non-judgemental, we NEVER take offense to another's social or political position. We have wonderful friends, we look out for our elderly neighbors and we live to eat!
So you see the problem, right?
izatryt at 6:13PM on 10/21/08
Uhh.... we're all screwed no matter what, so it doesn't matter?
And stop that, you're TOO good. You're making me feel guilty for throwing away my empty beer bottles. =D
nightowl at 6:29PM on 10/21/08
Well, there's that, but the real problem is I am not pissed off about anything, so I don't see how I could possibly make any legitimate points on this thread. I have been sitting back with my bowl of popcorn and watching the thrilled packed action. Every once in a while I drunk type. I'll try to restrain myself.
Please recycle your beer bottles!!
izatryt at 6:42PM on 10/21/08
@izatryt ~ I'd trade you in a heartbeat! I used to have your life, and then the sky fell, and then the earth opened, and then the fire in the middle of the earth reached the heavens, and then.........well, you know. I'm so glad to know you're grateful for your blessings - you deserve them, my friend!
PerkyMac at 6:43PM on 10/21/08
I used to recycle, got a lot of fun making pocket change by recycling aluminum cans. But now I live in New Orleans, and to be completely honest, I don't know where or how I would go about recycling. But I will try, inspired by your example!
nightowl at 6:52PM on 10/21/08
@Perk ~ Thank you. Your sun will shine, your heart will sing and you will one day look back on these times and understand the "Why". ((((hugs))))
izatryt at 6:58PM on 10/21/08
@nighty ~ You could Google recycling in New Orleans?
izatryt at 7:01PM on 10/21/08
lol, i love you iz.
@ shipwreck: thanks for clearing up the whole name-calling thing

PerkyMac at 9:08PM on 10/21/08
Well, the wine bottle is empty (going to the recycle bin) and the popcorn is all gone. This has been delightful. simon fell in love, nightowl is going to recycle beer bottles, Perky's heart is singing. As I said, I have the perfect life!
On November 2nd, you get to choose. Vote.
izatryt at 10:27PM on 10/21/08
Election Day is November 4th not the 2nd.
I already voted absentee for Obama last week! Woo hoo!
