apple-picking near NYC

I know that there are a good number of pick-your-own apple farms nearby NYC. However, I'd like to go this weekend to pick some apples and I'm finding out that some farms' apple-picking seasons are finished. Anyone have any suggestions for farms that are still doing pick-you-own apples? I'm in Manhattan and I have a car, so I'm not limited to public transportation. Thanks!

Stuart's Farm in Granite Springs seems like a good bet, we covered it on Serious Eats: New York.

Thanks! I just called to confirm: they are indeed still in pick-your-own apple season.

Try Pochuck Valley Farms in norther NJ or Solebury Orchard in bucks county PA. Pochuck is closer to Manhattan a little more than an hour away. Solebury is near New Hope so you can do some shopping while you're out there.

Terhune Orchards in NJ has the best apples around (as far as I'm concerned), and they're in full swing according to their website.

come to the hudson valley, 90 minutes from manhattan take the taconic parkway get off at rhinebeck/red hook exit... go left (west onto Rt. 199 - drive into the town of red hook. at the only light in town make a right (north)
onto Rt. 9 - go about 5 miles and you'll see Rt. 78 make left and right on the right side of the road you'll come to MEAD ORCHARDS!!!!
they have great apples as well as all kinds of other veggies available. open sat & sun. 10-5pm. it's a beautiful spot.... have lunch at GiGi's at greig farm ... it's just south from where you're turning....

Take a drive up to Warwick, NY. It's about 1.5 hours out of Manhattan, but the pretty scenery makes it go much faster. There are lots of orchards up there, but I strongly recommend Doc's. It's a winery/orchard, and they make all of their own hard ciders and wines on site. There is a really cute gift shop and EXCELLENT food! (Think flatbread pizzas, delicious salads and sandwiches, and grilled fare). The apples were great, and they had a large variety to choose from. On the weekends, they have a band, and people bring picnic lunches and drink hard cider all afternoon. We're already trying to see if we have a free weekend to go back before the season is over!

My "pick" is Golden Harvest Farms in Valatie, NY. They have pick-your-own apples through October, and they feature hot, fresh apple cider donuts and fresh-squeezed cider at the stand (where they also have fruit that's already been picked, lots of other baked stuff, etc).

It's not exactly a short ride from NYC but especially @ this time of year, it's well-worth it. The faster route is to take the NYS Thruway north to exit 21A, the exit to get to the Mass Pike. Get off @ the exit for Albany/Hudson/Route 9 (west). Head south on Route 9 (toward Hudson). Golden Harvest Farms is less than 5 miles south of your exit, on Route 9.

The scenic route is to get onto the Taconic Parkway, take it north, and get off in Chatham (Route 203). Take that west to Route 9. Take Route 9 north. There's a traffic circle, but it's an easy one. Golden Harvest Farms is just a bit north of the traffic circle, on Route 9. (It's about 20-30 minutes from the Taconic to the place.)

Either way, you're still talking more than 2 hrs from NYC, but the foliage is fantastic this year! (And will be for a while longer. Unless it rains.) If you're interested, Golden Harvest's website = http://goldenharvestfarms.com/

Second Terhune Orchards in Princeton. U-pick is still going on.
