Addicted to Food?
Have you ever been addicted to some type of food and just had to always have it around?
For awhile I was addicted to Grape Jolly Ranchers and I had to have a baggie of them with me at ALL TIMES! And it had to be JUST Grape!!
I would pop them in my mouth one after the other.
This went on for about 3 months and then I just stopped. Weird....
To this day I won't even let myself have one just in case it hits me again....

About 5-6 years ago it was Orange Tic Tac Mint Silvers for a couple of months, it was when they came out with these huge plastic containers full of individually wrapped ones, good lord I was obsessed with them.
Southern_bella at 5:36PM on 10/25/08
I'm addicted to dairy. Milk, cottage cheese, ice cream, milk, cheese, milk ... Guess I'll never have to worry about low calcium.
LunaPierCook at 6:08PM on 10/25/08
Not quite the same thing, but I find that I can happily exist without chocolate, without thinking about it, eating it, or cooking with it. But once I eat some, for the next few days or so, I start craving it.
dbcurrie at 6:16PM on 10/25/08
I wiah I was addicted to food instead of cigarettes. My next big hurdle to overcome.
bessfour at 6:42PM on 10/25/08
Currently, I'm completely addicted to this:
Layer of yogurt, layer of organic granola, drizzle of honey, topped with whatever berries I have around or a chopped up banana.
I stay up until 5 or 6 a.m. everyday and I get the most hungry in the middle of the night. I know eating late is supposed to be bad for you, but that's the meal I've had at like, 3 a.m. for the past week. At least it's healthy, right? I'm not sick of it yet and I doubt I will become sick of it, it's so damn delicious. I'm addicted!
PumpkinBear at 6:48PM on 10/25/08
Absolutely, I know what you mean. Being addicted to a food is different than loving it or craving it. Like during certain stressful times in my life, I would always have to have a certain food--like when I was in grad school, a maple oat nut scone and a mocha Frappucino from Starbucks, or when I was on the swim team in high school a chocolate and cream cheese muffin or (okay, sometimes, and) a peanut butter and jelly muffin from the local 7-11 after practice. I don't eat any of those things now, but it was something I got very fixated on and physically and emotionally craved as a 'reward' for various reasons, at those particular times.
HeartofGlass at 7:17PM on 10/25/08
Post-Hurricane Katrina it was Wildberry Skittles, but I can't stand the reds (cherry). Now I always have to have some good French/sourdough/rustic Italian bread on hand, and I always have some kind of ice cream in the freezer. I'm not a big fan of ice cream sandwiches, but for some reason I have been completely hooked on them lately. I sit at work allll day and dream of coming home and scarfing down an ice cream sandwich the minute I walk in the door. I have a problem, I think.
pearl at 8:34PM on 10/25/08
Sambuca. Once every year during Girl's Weekend!
izatryt at 8:39PM on 10/25/08
When I was still in high school, the first year my sister went away, my mother stopped cooking, so I ate goldfish crackers. It was the only thing we never ran out of...miraculously.
machellebelle at 9:46PM on 10/25/08
Iced sweet tea with real sugar. If I am out of this I cannot function. I have been drinking sweet tea since 1991. I got myself off the Brisk tea last year because it had HFCS.
JerzeeTomato at 11:31PM on 10/25/08
I think I may have an obsession with cucumbers. When I lived in Southern California it was the one thing I had to get everytime I hit the store. When I left and spent 2 or so months in South Carolina, I found that the cucumbers there have a way less waxy texture but are just as refreshing and much cheaper (sometimes as little as $0.25 a piece!). Now that I'm finally in Ohio, my obsession has not dwindled. I eat them sliced, in salads, on every kind of sandwich you could imagine (even with fried eggs)...and I could probably eat 3 in a single sitting.
I might have found a new obsession in Honeycrisp apples though. I have found myself drooling about the thought of them.
mayoxqueen at 12:05AM on 10/26/08
hazelnut iced coffees from dunkins donuts and when i was in spain there was this amazing cappuccino flavored cereal. i would eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and snacks.
megannesta at 1:15AM on 10/26/08
Coffee in any way, shape, or form, particularly my own drip or my school library's hazelnut lattes. And Orbit gum -- I always, always, always have a pack with me. I think I have some kind of oral fixation; I always have to be chewing or drinking something.
kfarrel3 at 1:27AM on 10/26/08
Oh Boy! Where's Perky???
izatryt at 10:51AM on 10/26/08
I am completely addicted to coffee. I try to limit myself to 2 cups every morning but usually end up having another cup around lunchtime and one in the evening. I've become resistant to the caffeine and go right to sleep! As far as food, I go through spells, right now it's yogurt. Yoplait's custard style key lime.
caramel at 11:08AM on 10/26/08
Hey iz. I'm here. Started a comment, and erased it. I know she can keep coming up with new monikers, but wouldn't you think they'd have already blocked that screen name? Who knows, maybe she actally likes us, she really, really likes us? I love coffee, but would never buy that brand because of the "marketing" tactics. Maybe we could have a SE boycott on that particular coffee?
PerkyMac at 11:25AM on 10/26/08
Ha Ha Perk! Since I don't drink coffee, this is an easy one. ;-)
izatryt at 11:29AM on 10/26/08
@jerzeetomato - you must be related to my husband! There HAS to be sweet iced tea in the fridge at all times! When I get tired of making it I buy the big jug of Arizona, but it's the only store bought he'll drink. If he goes even a few days without iced tea he gets cranky! He doesn't drink coffee so I guess it's not that bad, it's just kinda weird ... lol.
caramel at 11:29AM on 10/26/08
@ Chell, P-Mac and Iz...I say we see how many threads she can incorporate her 'ad' into...
Japanese Banana Diet...

or
Punk Rock Kitchen
'I only listen to bands that drink pure 100% kona coffee cause it ROCKS'
hammondcheese at 12:08PM on 10/26/08
@hammondcheese ~ hilarious idea! Just one question - I thought the new ideal was to fit into a double or triple zero (which convert to size 8/6 in olden days of yore when I was buying "misses" or "junior", not ugh "womens".
SOUP: I found the easiest and most delicious recipe. Just brew a couple of pots of boycotted coffee, stir in some garlic cream at the very end, top with chopped parsley and enjoy.
PerkyMac at 12:17PM on 10/26/08
Or, we could start a new thread...........Anyone? Anyone?
I am off to partay with my fellow Eagles fans! Thanks for the soup perk! My peeps will LOVE it!! GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!
izatryt at 12:30PM on 10/26/08
ok I think we got off;) I was addicted to laffy taffy when I was a teenager. I would eat the little ones by the handful. I loved cherry - yummmmm artificial flavoring.
love2cook at 3:18PM on 10/26/08
@pearl-- the way you wrote that, it sounds like you make your ice cream sandwiches with French bread! Thanks for the laugh!
I went through a couple periods of food addiction in high school. The first one was a baked potato with cheddar cheese and soy sauce (I know, I'm weird). I would eat one of these every single night, no exceptions.
My other addiction was also in high school. I must've eaten about a thousand slices of cinnamon sugar buttered toast.
Come to think of it, maybe that's how I gained so much weight! Funny how, after I moved out of my parents' "eat everything on your plate and most of it is starches" home, I lost it all!
nightowl at 3:52PM on 10/26/08
As a matter of fact...last summer it was those frozen ice cream cones with the nuts on top like nutty buddies(or any variation) my daughter was starting to get worried about me since I always had at least two boxes in the freezer!

Ok, what on earth are you guys on about?? Spill, please! In-jokes are rude! By the way, I am addicted to chillies
snowmoonelk at 6:40PM on 10/26/08
I'm addicted to pho. I can and will eat it every single day. My husband helps control this by taking us out elsewhere.
My other addiction, which is more severe, is (spearmint) mints or gum. The past ~6 months, I have had a really bad mint craving ALL the time. So I have spearmint breath mints in the car, Eclipse spearmint gum barrel in my office, and those red and white peppermint candies at home. The only time I don't have one of the three in my mouth is when I'm asleep, eating food, and...a private situation I don't want to get in to here. :P
In general, I'm addicted to spicy food, so the majority of my dishes have a dash of chili pepper flakes or cayenne pepper added.
Cassaendra at 7:03PM on 10/26/08
Haha, nightowl. I totally didn't realize I had written that that way until you pointed it out! If I were eating ice cream sandwiches on actual BREAD, then I'd really have a problem, wouldn't I? :o)
pearl at 7:05PM on 10/26/08
@snowmoonelk, I agree! How rude, what happened to the thread?

sorry.

I am addicted to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! In high school I was mad about the blue raspberry Blow Pops.

Pizza! I keep blaming it on being pregnant, but anyone who knows me knows that's a lotta bull :)

ok, hammondcheese, no wonder it didn't make sense - still like to be in on it though! ;)

I have a confession:
I'm obsessed.
I think about food, I dream about food, I look forward to food;
people have actually said that I change the subject towards food without even noticing.
hungrychristel at 12:40PM on 10/27/08
Blue Bell peppermint ice cream! Luckily they don't make it year round.
ocarol at 1:40PM on 10/27/08
Orange Craisins.
I am helpless when there is a whole bag anywhere near me.
Brownie at 1:57PM on 10/27/08
@hungrychristel - you're not alone. In fact, I think the same could be said for all of us serious eats members - that's why we're on here!
Anyway, I'm totally addicted to peanut butter...which I realize is somewhat common, but my addiction is probably a little out of control. I will eat it anytime of the day, on something or just straight out of the jar with a spoon, even if I'm not hungry. And if I am hungry and nothing else sounds good, peanut butter ALWAYS sounds good. I really don't think I could live without it. I really don't.
kimberlymac at 2:01PM on 10/27/08
I have loved craisins since I was tiny.... I don't know why. They have so much more flavor than raisins, and their texture is more pleasing, too. And I recently found an off-brand that doesn't contain any preservatives, just dried cranberries and sugar, so that's good.
nightowl at 2:27PM on 10/27/08
I'm with kimberlymac on the PB....but I don't even have the decency to use a spoon. Once I open that jar, it's all over. Don't even get me started on honey-roasted peanuts, that a whole other disaster waiting to happen.
My longest standing addiction would have to be cereal - any and all kinds, from Fiber1 to Cocoa Puffs, I love them all. I think it started in college - it was a food source that I always had in my dorm; late nights +boredom = mass cereal consumption.
gtchick at 2:42PM on 10/27/08
My food fixations are usually very short-lived and seldom result in going out of my way to keep some specific edible on hand. For instance, I'm not a huge fan of hot dogs. I can totally live without them. But I periodically buy the really high quality beef dogs with casings to please my family. And when they're in the house, I'll eat them every single day, twice a day (breakfast AND lunch), until they're gone. Then I don't want them again until the next time somebody asks me to buy them.
In terms of actual addictions, I'm a hopeless caffeine-addict, and my preferred delivery method is coffee. I've tried to kick it in the past, but the withdrawal proved so excruciating that I even continued having one cup of joe every morning throughout each of my pregnancies. Ultimately, I decided that there were worse vices, and until something convinces me that I'd be better off without, caffeine shall remain my drug of choice.
LoCo at 2:43PM on 10/27/08
Like you and your grape jolly ranchers, I developed a sudden addiction to Dentyne Fire Sugarless gum. For a year, I chewed two packs a day, and panicked if I ran out. I knew which stores carried the three packs and which didn't. Then one day, gone. I haven't chewed any in the two years since then. Wierd.
lambowner at 5:29PM on 10/27/08
I eat when I am not hungry. If there is food in front of me, I MUST EAT IT. I just really like the taste of food. I wish there were rods of flavors that I could suck on.
Nebagakid at 6:25PM on 10/27/08
Oh gosh, the peanut butter thing--don't get me started. It amazes me how people can chastely keep a huge jar of the stuff, use a bit of it and then forget it is in the refrigerator. I can have an unopened jar around, but once I get in the habit of taking a few nips, forget about it...
HeartofGlass at 7:40PM on 10/27/08
Ha! I was just munching Craisins out of a little ramekin as I read this. I'm on my second 48-oz bag in just a few months...
thehostess at 9:14PM on 10/27/08
I have to eat toast with peanut butter every morning, with a cup of tea, if not I just can't function. About once a week I eat something else for breakfast, usually to be sociable or polite, but my inner self is secretly wishing for toast and peanut butter.
"Great strata/waffles/french toast/quiche/eggs! (Jeez I wish that I was eating toast and PB)
PeanutButter at 9:32PM on 10/27/08
@ocarol
Baskin Robbins's or Friendly's pink peppermint stick ice cream.
Just yesterday I walked past, tapping my fingertips together, thinking, "soon... soon"
Every year there is at least one day that I eat it, and only it, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is like sweet, Christmassy crack to me.
Pepto pink, with chips of hard peppermint candy that have turned chewy.
bonnie at 9:57PM on 10/27/08
mangoes
i.am.obsessed.
and peanut butter!!
(but not together)
at least not yet... ;)
sweethoney at 10:32PM on 10/27/08
spicy tuna nigiri from the only place that serves sushi up here.
all it is is sushi rice + sriracha hot sauce + raw tuna.
but by golly. i have to eat it at least once a week with a bowl of miso soup.
and i pretty much have been going there and getting this for the last 2-3 years, so i would call it a food addiction, lol.
doesn't help that i live about 500 ft. from the restaurant that serves it now ;)
also, sour patch kids. no other candy appeals to me as much as those lil guys. i'm kinda a chocolate hater and other gummy candies just aren't as yummy (though i like haribo gummy bears too).
and beef jerky. i can eat a bag of jerky like no ones business. i'm always buying it when i can justify the cost (poor college student).
plyeng at 1:40AM on 10/28/08
i'm addicted to eggs in general. fried, scrambled, omelets. my current obsession is the poached egg. i find an excuse to top everything with a poached egg.
HappyJack at 12:07PM on 10/28/08
Potatoes. Bacon. Peanut butter. Can't live without them
BITTER at 12:14PM on 10/28/08
Garden of Eatin' Red Hot & Blue chips. If I break down and buy a bag, I will eat them all in one day. I swear I can hear them calling from the top of the fridge if I try to stop.
Melinda at 12:44PM on 10/28/08
Thanks a lot, plyeng! I was just about over with not ruminating about beef jerky daily -- one of my other really bad addictions using the "out of sight, out of mind" method of trying to crack the habit.
GAH!! Must...have...beef...jerky. Cracked pepper. Mmm.
Best beef jerky ever was the 20 lbs of beef jerky my aunt and uncle sent along with me (11 years ago when they lived in Austin) as I was driving cross country, to share half with my Aunt who lives in Orange, TX. It was difficult to think of parting with 10 lb of beef jerky. I thought, how would they know I didn't give her any beef jerky...but how could I be so greedy? I mean 10 lb of beef jerky is enough to last 1 week or 2, and I was visiting her in 2 days.
Cassaendra at 1:04PM on 10/28/08
MMM...Häagen-Dazs coffee ice cream. If I can't have at least one pint each week, I am miserable. You don't want to be around me. And, you never want to ask me to share...LOL!! This has been going on for years and years now. I am truly addicted. Of course, I love all things coffee, including Kahlua, which, BTW, is excellent on aforementioned ice cream!! Aside from this, I get addicted to summer fruits each year, especially watermelon and strawberries, and get SO depressed when the season is over. Ditto asparagus season. I can't get enough asparagus to keep me happy. I eat it daily, preferably roasted, every single day it's in season. Oh, I might as well admit it, I'm just addicted to great food. I, too, manage to turn almost every conversation to the topic of food. My friends can't believe I don't weigh 300 pounds, at least. I am lucky to have kept a fast metabolism at my age. I suppose it still could change, but really, I'd rather be fat and happy than skinny and miserable. And, I WOULD be miserable if I couldn't eat what I wanted when I wanted it. (Of course, if I didn't have SOME self-control, I'd be eating at least a pint of Häagen-Dazs coffee ice cream each and every day.)
Carolina de Witte at 1:38PM on 10/28/08
i second the dentyne fire. but the addition only lasted several weeks. then i had another love affair with big red.
emoelely at 1:43PM on 10/28/08
I love craisins too!!!! Such a perfect snack and ingredient.
I guess to answer the question (though it's very tough);
I'm with Cassandra on the beef jerkey. If I'm hungry it always satisfies.
But I would also say CUCUMBER. I'm obsessed with'em.
hungrychristel at 3:04PM on 10/28/08
How about the Trail Mix form Costco?
Salty and Sweet!
I won't even let myself go near a bag....
Hunnyoil at 3:08AM on 10/29/08
Animal crackers ... it's a sick addiction, particularly when there's peanut butter or Nutella around to dip them in.
poke87 at 9:12AM on 10/29/08
cheese, doesn't matter what type and of course chocolate, gotta have it in some form daily, usually chocolate milk.
dozertx at 11:11AM on 10/29/08
I obsess about foods I've never eaten before - what they'd taste like, where I could find them, that kind of thing. Right now, I'm obsessed with the idea of furikake on white rice. It just sounds so good!
And I always, at all times wish I was eating a Totino's Party Pizza. It's a sickness with me.
