100-calorie packs have gone too far...
I was at a pet store, and spotted a 100-calorie snack pack. Did a double-take. No, it was not human food, it was dog treats. Come on, now, have we lost all sense?
What's next, 100-calorie mulch for garden plants, so they don't get too fat?
I so hate food fads. I shudder to think what the next one will be. We've gone through counting calories; we've done low fat and low carb. I doubt it will be low protein. What do you think the next fad will be?

Sooooo ... how'd they taste?
... sorry, it was out there, had to be asked ... ;-)
LunaPierCook at 7:09AM on 10/06/08
Low-cal? It was probably salty, right? What next? Artificial sweetners? I hope it's at least high in protein. Otherwise, it's rubbish. They need that stuff in their diet.
I ate some of my puppy's dry food when we first got it. Puh! It was dry and tasted like dirt.

I am waiting to see the 100-calorie packet of Thanksgiving dinner.
KarynMC at 7:59AM on 10/06/08
@db ~ Are you kidding me? I think I have heard it all now. All things in moderation. That goes for doggies too!
One thing I find interesting; I have 2 Cairn Terriers. They are brothers, 1 litter apart (6 months) Mickey (13) is really chubby, okay he looks like a fat sausage with toothpick legs. Eddie (12) is nice and slender. Same diet, Although Mickey gets a little less at meal time, same exercise. This is not a recent development either.

I need some 100 calorie bird feed packs. The wrens in my back yard are starting to get a little paunch.
NorthernBBQer at 8:10AM on 10/06/08
Dbcurrie-I'm so glad you posted that--I live in NJ and I saw them, too!
Honestly, they're so absurd because most people don't know how many calories they need a day, much less how many calories their dogs need a day.
(Dogs need more calories per pound than humans, for example, because they have a higher body temperature).
HeartofGlass at 9:14AM on 10/06/08
And I thought the guacamole packs were going too far....
lemons at 9:48AM on 10/06/08
Well, since some say that 100 calorie packs can make us fatter, maybe these should only be given to underweight pets??
CookiePie at 10:18AM on 10/06/08
Actually, I think I need some 200-calorie packs for the squirrels. Maybe then they'll stop digging in my plants.
@Heart, I can sort of (sort of) understand this sort of portion control for humans who will consume an entire bag of chips, no matter what size, but are there people who can't limit how many snacks they feed their dogs? "OOOh, Fido ate the whole bag of pig ears in one sitting!"
dbcurrie at 1:15PM on 10/06/08
diet baby food will be next...for infants who hate their chubby cheeks. ;)
gastronomeg at 1:21PM on 10/06/08
no one should be eating those 100 calorie backs- it's processed, HFCS loaded crap. Want a 100 calorie snack? Eat an apple or a banana and get some antioxidants and vitamins too while you're at it. Wake up America.
sqtip at 1:32PM on 10/06/08
The newest phenomenon is already upon us folks. At www.youbars.com, you can create your own snack bars using a variety of ingredients such as proteins, nuts, fruits, seeds, sweeteners, etc. As you build, the site tells you how many calories you are packing into your bar. Another similar site allows you to create your own cereal mix and actually name it. It, too, counts the calories as you go. I never checked the cost, but you can bet they're pricier than your standard energy bar.
Josdean at 4:57PM on 10/06/08
@db--I saw them, too, as my 5 month old black lab was about to stick his entire head into treat bulk bin! I do recall rolling my eyes and shaking my head at that latest gimmick.
wookie at 5:10PM on 10/06/08
@wookie- That's why Noodle, my Daschund/Beagle mix has to ride in the cart at Petco. Otherwise, he'd eat ALL the 100-calorie packs--as an appetizer.
beth1 at 11:41PM on 10/06/08
A truly resourceful dog will just eat their own poop if they're still hungry after that 100-calorie pack.
buffy at 11:59PM on 10/06/08
I make my dogs treats and dog food she is perfectly fit dog. If she looks thin i give her more if she looks fat i give her less. this does not work for me but she is the perfect weight, me on the other hand........
love2cook at 9:44AM on 10/07/08
i think it's indicative: we shouldn't eat something we shudder to give our pets...
Kerry Saretsky at 6:15PM on 10/07/08
@ love2cook, it would work for you, if you didn't have possession of opposable thumbs and permission to open the fridge. Seriously, if someone else was in charge of doling out portions of food for you, and you had no control over what or how much you ate, the person in control could easily regulate your weight. It wouldn't be fun, but it would work.
dbcurrie at 6:38PM on 10/07/08
the 100-calorie pack idea was good when it first came out, cos it's made sense--things that could be portioned into 100-calorie servings logically, and still be enough to provide something to munch on--it was originally cheezits, pretzels, that kind of thing.
but now it's just gotten retarded...i saw a 100 calorie pack the other day for fuckin' cupcakes.
stupid.
rasellers0 at 2:40AM on 10/08/08
Besides, doesn't anyone notice that most dogs, and animals for that instance, will only eat until they are full? At least all the dogs that I've had will....no more, no less....
That's ridiculous, I believe that nobody should really "diet", everything in moderation...stop eating when you're ful, eat a square meal (a meat, a starch, and a veggie, with a salad on the side), enjoy a small serving of dessert every once in awhile.
I don't know, I just don't get it
uaskigyrl at 10:42PM on 10/09/08
@uaskigyrl--LOL, if I let my Labrador Retrievers eat until they were full, I'd be broke and they'd be too fat to move.
wookie at 11:35PM on 10/09/08
I have 3 dogs and I leave a bowl of dried food and a bowl of water out every day and they come and eat when they are hungry and stop when they have had enough. They are fit and healthy.
snowmoonelk at 4:28AM on 10/14/08
"i saw a 100 calorie pack the other day for fuckin' cupcakes."
Hmmmm.... "fuckin" cupcakes. Is that a brand name? Or were the cupcakes actually engaged in some sort of dessert sexual activity? Got any photos?
What about gay and lesbian cupcakes, are there gay and lesbian cupcakes?
FastFoodCritic at 5:09AM on 10/14/08
@FFC~ROFL!!
izatryt at 9:14AM on 10/14/08
Simply being in a 100 calorie pack doesn't mean that the product is bad.
Many people feed their pets far too much and give them far too many treats.
That something is overdone and mis-used doesn't mean it doesn't have a reasonable place at times.
@josdean, thanks for the tip. youbars is a fabulous idea; they're pricier than most of the bars out there at grocery stores but in range of many that I see at health food stores.
oh, and hqtip, this was about 100 calories packs for dogs. 100 calories packs for humans, also not entirely HFCS loaded crap (one of the favorite deserts in my house is the 100 calorie pack of oatmeal cookies from Trader Joe's).
ccbweb at 10:09AM on 10/14/08
OK, so, when will they get on the ball and just put out,like,500 calorie packs, or 1,000 calorie packs, or, maybe 10,000 calorie packs, use it for parties, or maybe an emergency pack!
These 100 calorie packs are TOO LITTLE, you end up eating, like, THREE to get anything.
which is why I don't waste my money.
