Where can I find Ekmek in NYC?
My wife and I went to Greece for our honeymoon and had lots of a dessert called Ekmek. After doing some research, it appears to be a Turkish dessert, but I haven't seen it anywhere in the city (Greek OR Turkish restaurants).
Our second anniversary is coming up and I'd like to take my wife someplace where we can get some Ekmek! Anyone ever seen/heard of it?

Not sure how far you're willing to travel but....I typed Ekmek into Yelp's search and this is the only place that comes up: http://www.gulluoglubaklava.com/

Take her to Astoria! If you're willing to travel to the boroughs, Astoria is home of all things Greek and delicious. There are a number of restaurants out here that serve Ekmek and a variety of other Greek desserts. Lefkos Pyrgos and Artopolis are two bakeries right off the N line that have been my frequent suppliers of Ekmek. Why don't you take a trip out here and have dinner at an authentic Greek place, then take a walk to a bakery with outdoor seating and have some ekmek for dessert? I'll be glad to give suggestions!

Ekmek is a composed dessert made with Kataifi as it's base. This is the angel hair pastry called Kataifi. You can find it at Kalustyans. You would have to make the rest though, the custard etc.
Here is a recipe:

Good luck!

I can't recommend anything but I hope this helps.

There's also an Artopolis up here near Columbia (Amsterdam between 113th and 114th), but I don't know off the top of my head if they have ekmek..

I'm happy to turn anyone on to the deliciousness in my neighborhood! Taverna Kyclades is my favorite, by far---if you're a fan of fish, you can't get anything more authentic or more fresh. It's always packed, and the crowds are always speaking Greek, which is a good sign! Stagmatis, Telly's Taverna, and Agnanti are all solid bets for a great meal, with Agnanti being the most upscale. I would recommend getting dinner and then taking a walk around Ditmars Blvd. to check out the neighborhood. Finish your night at at a bakery (Lefkos Pyrgos and Artopolis are both on the N line back to the city) and enjoy your ekmek!
You might also want to check out www.astorians.com. Search the message boards---Astoria is a great neighborhood, and everyone is always willing to brag about their favorite spots!

Thanks for the recommendations! I still have every intention of hitting Astoria to continue my quest, but I had a go at making my own ekmek from the above recipe and thought I'd share the photographic evidence.
