What to have with PB&J?

So, for lunch today I'm going all old-school and having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (chai iced tea instead of the standard milk). As I stared at the sandwich on the plate, I realized I had no idea what to make for a side. What do you have with your peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

I would have either a crisp apple sliced or red grapes. I love have crisp fresh fruit with my PB&J....

a fruit rollup.

definitely apple!

chicken noodle soup
crisp apple sounds really great
for dessert .. an Oreo .. and I'd have to have a glass of milk : )

You had me stumped when you put it on a plate. What a novel concept. Actually, I'm not a fan of mixing pb & j on the same sandwich, but either alone is fine. But it's usually that ingredient on bread or toast, and I eat it until it's gone. I'll have to try that plate thing someday.

A banana. Actually, I prefer PB & banana to PB & J anyway.

Potato chips all the way. I use to put chips right on the sandwich. An apple is good too.

The fruit should be the same flavor as the jelly!

Or be really old-school decadent and go with a brownie or a chocolate chip cookie!

i have to agree with two of you potato chips, in the sandwich and what's a plate for? ;-)

I'm personally a PB&Banana girl myself, but either way baby carrots and a nice cold glass of chocolate milk I think are the perfect sides of this old school sandwich. enjoy! :-)

Fruit, definitely!

Now I'm going to warn you...you might find this gross.

I love to eat PB&J w/ cheetos, a pickle, and milk. My husband has made a comment every time I have eaten it.

Who knows maybe I just discovered the next best thing :)

Definitely an apple or banana. It's hard for me to pair a PB&J with any sort of soup. For some reason, the tastes never seem to work well together. On the other hand, some fruit or a handful of nuts (or, better yet, both) make a tasty combination for me. Have you tried A PB&J with slivered almonds inside as well? Really nice, adds a little extra crunch (even if you are already using crunchy PB) and a little different flavor profile. I love it!

a fresh fruit salad goes wonderfully if you have some. If not, definitely just grape or an apple. Something a bit tart to balance out the sweet pb&j.

I also will sometimes go in the opposite direction and have a handful of salty potato chips. Salt and Vinegar usually. :)

regular thin Lay's potato chips. Not ruffles, kettle chips, cape cod or anything else (not that I don't like them.) OK maybe Jay's. Just thin, greasy, crunchy and salty. Same holds true for tuna salad.

potato chips smashed inside!

Potato chips, celery stalks and soup, no questions asked. For myself I rinse it down with a tall, cold as hell glass of milk (plain or chocolate).

ok, yes! smashed inside. Glad to know I'm not the only wierdo out there.

@gregturner, asked, "What do you have with your peanut butter and jelly sandwich?"
The obvious answer is, a second PB&J sandwich! And get off the "modern" jag and pour that ice cold glass of milk like you know that you want to...

always lays chips! but i leave the jelly out and put pb on both pieces of bread, it keeps the chips in the sandwich better and helps negate the need for that pesky, has to be washed plate! ;-)

Funny, I never considered PB&J a dish that needs a side but you've enlightened me! I'd do a piece of fruit - apple, banana, pear - or a nice handful of granola.

cool ranch doritos and a frozen swiss cake roll.

Definitely some kind of chips. Potato chips are always winners, but corn chips will do just fine.

That way, you get the sweet and the salty/crunchy bit.

All the apple and carrot suggestions are wonderful, too.

plain, salty, ruffled potato chips!!!

Absolutely salty chips, Utz's if you can find them, or some local "kettle-cooked" variety will do...

Another sandwich - peanut butter (chunky) with lots of chipotle tabasco and black berry jam!!! Yum. Or, peanut butter, bacon, tomato & basil. Peanut butter and pepper jelly or apricot habanero jam. Oh, and ice water.

OK, people -- I am the one who who first put Lays potato chips in a PBJ sandwich. More than 40 years ago. So there. (Though I am wondering how and when it spread from Honolulu all the way across the country.)

Chai Tea? Forget that! Stick with an icy cold glass of 2% milk.
and a handful of red seedless grapes.
then a sleeve of fig newtons with some more milk. :o)

@ Deacon...I was going to say Utz! But I was lazy and since they are regional, I didn't feel like explaining it. We are so on the same page :)

Let's take a trip back to my childhood and have it with some cheese and crackers, an apple, and a note from my Mom. In a TMNT lunchbox.

Or, as I ate one two days ago, with roasted almonds and grapes.

This is too weird. I just had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich today for lunch for the first time in awhile...I just had a nectarine with mine but I think I'm still hungry. :)

Chew on That

Apples, grapes, or a crunchy carrot stick.
Maybe some pirate booty, or smart food.

apple slices with sharp cheddar cheese. that way, everything you are eating isnt sweet, because you would get bored.

Bacon is pretty amazing, especially inside the sandwich!

its so nice to hear that other people love to put potato chips inside their pb&j. its all about the salt

I love a bowl of vegetable beef soup... just like in elementary school. Then maybe an apple or banana to finish it off.

how about this one. I make a PB&J, grill it in a panini press and serve it all gooey with a side of lime and cilantro tortilla chips. flavor combination will remind you strongly of Thai!!!

Cold glass of milk, a pickle, and Cape Cod chips. Maybe some carrot sticks as well.

How funny we all seem to prefer different chips!

Ok, so Im high right now and Ive never tried this but im thinking putting cheerios on a PB & J would be amazing. Wow, love this stuff, definitely my epicurean muse.

Potato chips smashed in the sandwich.... Lays are better than the other brands for PB&J. Side of favorite soup, and for added color either carrot's or celery.

I like Nacho cheese Dorito's in smashed in my bologna sandwhich,
and Frito's smashed in my tuna sandwich... Seems like only Frito-lay products taste best in sandwiches.

I love what my mother got me into, PB and Apple sandwich. Sounds weird, but really good!

I drink chai tea lattes all day long, but with PB&J never, ice cold milk rules w/PB&Js.
