The Passing of "Newman's Own" Founder, Actor Paul Newman
Paul Newman, actor, and founder of "Newman's Own", has passed away. From a statement from the foundation, included in one of the many obituaries:
"Newman's Own ... What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company. And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million."
Here on SE, a taste test of sandwich cookies, including Newman-O's, was reported yesterday, coincidentally the same day Mr. Newman passed away.

Yes, sad. And what I have tasted of Newman's Own products are good to eat as well as good charity work.

I've had a major crush on him my whole life, but I also learned to respect and admire him for how he lived his personal life, his acting chops and roles he chose, and later for his philanthropic philosophy. What a role model for all. They broke the mold. I'm so sad to lose him.

I got the news from my Twitter friends first thing upon opening up the laptop this morning and the first thing I thought about was Newman's Own and then the 50 eggs scene in Cool Hand Luke. As CNN is talking about right now, he somehow managed to combine being a "matinee idol" and being a "serious actor." There aren't many who have done that and no one today acting who I think do that. Thanks for starting this topic, LPC.

Joanne Woodward's mother used to be a customer of mine at a bank I worked at in the early 1980s. It was always cool to see checks come through the bank window labeled "Paul and Joanne Newman." They were truly good people.
I loved that so much of Newman's Own profits went to special needs kids. And his light Balsamic Vinaigrette is my favorite bottled dressing!

He is one of my favorites, not just as an actor or bc of his handsomeness, but also for his humanitarian work and for seeming to be so un-Hollywood.
He was definitely one of the greats on so many levels. His contributions were many and, thankfully, will live on. My husband and I were both sad to hear of his passing.

Wow. I didn't know he was gone. RIP Paul Newman thanks for everything.

I knew he was really sick a few weeks ago. Still, this is a very sad day indeed. He was an amazing person, someone we can all learn from. In this day and age, that is unique.

What a full, wonderful life--sad, of course, that he is gone but like everyone has said, he truly made every moment count.

I hope his brand remains in its full integrity. It's a rare person who makes a mark in the acting world and the philanthropic world as vividly as Paul Newman. He was a real class act.

One of my favourite quotes is a Paul Newman quote "Why go out for hamburgers when you have steak at home?"

There was an e-mail circulating about a month ago. A woman went into a little counter restaurant in Connecticut only to see Paul Newman at the counter. He gave her a little smile and went back to reading his paper. Respecting his privacy, she went about her business and placed an order for a piece of pie (or something similar) to-go. He nodded to her again as she left. Upon reaching her car, she realized she didn't have her keys or her pie. So she went back inside sheepishly, looking for her keys and her purchase. Mr. Newman flashed her one of his classic smiles and with his blue eyes twinkling, he remarked to her "Your keys are on the counter and the pie is in your purse". The e-mail came with a picture of him in a self-effacing pose. What a class act! The world was a better place with him in it. He will be sorely missed.

I love that Newman's Own was an unintentional, but hugely successful and positive thing.
The work he did with children is simply awe-inspiring.
As are "Fig Newmans"--one of the most delicious cookies you can get in a package.
