Serrrriouusss eats in SF

I'm going to San Francisco for the first time over the weekend and need some recommendations in where to find some good eats (can you believe I've never been to SF when i live in L.A?) I am on a budget but I'm willing to splurge on one occasion while I'm there. Bring on the good stuff!

7 Comments:

No visit to SF is complete without a visit to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market (and Hog Island during happy hour). My other favorites include:

Fresca (the West Portal or Fillmore locations) - get the lomo saltado!

Incanto - my favorite Italian restaurant, a must-go especially if you love offal. Exec Chef is Chris Cosantino (And visit Boccalone in the Ferry Plaza, also run by Cosantino).

PPQ on Irving is great Vietnamese food.

New Eritrea is delicious if you like Ethiopian/Eritrean food - get the okra

Osha is trendy Thai food and gets really busy, but I have to recommend it because I've never had a dish there that didn't dissapoint. Avoid the Embarcadero location though, I like the other ones better.

Ti Couz makes great crepes, on Valencia. Best iced coffee ever.

For Dim Sum, go to Ton Kiang on Geary in SF or Fook Yuen in Millbrae. Yank Sing is popular, but I think it's too overpriced and not as authentic.

Poleng in SF has great Filipino-style small plates.

Esperpento in the Mission has the among the best tapas I've had (see below for my favorite though.)

For ice cream, go to Bi-Rite and Mitchell's.

If you're going to be in the East Bay at all, check out Sketch or Ici in Berkeley for ice cream, Koryo for Korean food in Oakland, and Bar Cesar for tapas in Piedmont.

In my eyes, no trip to San Fancisco is complete without a swing out to Scoma’s Restaurant - Pier 47 on Al Scoma Way; www.scomas.com

I ate their the 1st time with my mother as a teenager and it was a magical experience. I was back in the Bay area a few months ago and it was as wonderful as I remembered!

Gotta getta burrito, no? When I visited SF with the GF, she brought me to La Corneta in Glen Park: http://www.burritophile.com/place.php?id=159. Good stuff! And, yeah, +1 for the Ferry Building Farmers' Market!

I know a lot of people have mentioned Tartine Bakery in previous threads. It's nice for breakfast if you can get there early enough to snag a seat. It's located in the Mission District, which is also home to a bunch of taquerias. If you are into coffee, my roommate loves Blue Bottle in Hayes Valley.

Not sure if I would agree with some of the recommendations above but here are my favorite restaurants:
-Piperade
-Perbacco
-A16
-Ame
- La Taqueria... my favorite Taqueria

Yes, you must go the Ferry Building and check out the scene.

If you go on to SFgate.com and check out the the food section's top 100... that will put you on the right track for sure.

Cheers,
Angela

@ WineUnleashed: I second La Taqueria!

A taco or burrito (depending on my level of hunger) + watermelon or pineapple agua fresca is one of my favorite things to get in the city.

i third, fourth and fifth la taqueria. if you're in the east bay, i used to absolutely adore lalimes in berkeley. and chez panisse is still one of the best restaurants in the country.
