Mayo vs. Miracle Whip

I admit, I prefer Miracle Whip over mayo. Just never acquired a taste for real mayo. I also cannot tolerate any dish/sandwich made with either mayo or MW that is heated. I must be cold.

To my friends who say, "Why ruin a dish with Miracle Whip?" I say "Why ruin a dish with mayo?!"

Hellman's Mayo or not at all.

I never had Miracle Whip in my life. If it's anything like salad cream in the UK -- no thanks, I don't believe I would ever want to try it. I often make my own mayo, but I also always keep a couple of jars of ready-made in my cupboard -- and like Jerzee, I only buy (and eat) Hellman's. No generic, no other brands -- ever.

I've never cared for either, but my brother, who is a major mayo fan, inhales Duke's (southeat regional brand). When we were kids, he'd make a mayo sandwich. Bread and mayo, nothing else. eeww.

GolfGirl, how about trying homemade mayo? A world apart, including a world apart from Miracle Whip.

Maybe just try one time make at home. Bonus: you can add tastes to it, like dill or garlic or whatever.

You know, I always hated MW until I joined Weight Watchers, then I started trying out a lot of fat-free stuff. Yes, most of it tasted craptacular, but the fat-free MW is actually pretty good.

I don't eat it anymore--I weaned myself permanently off any mayo/MW and onto mustards, but it was decent stuff at the right time.

I like them both for different uses. Turkey sandwich - mayo; tuna sandwich - Miracle Whip; tuna with anything added - mayo; deviled eggs - MW; egg salad sandwich - mayo; scrambled egg sandwich - MW; potato salad - mayo.

I am also a Hellmans gall . It has been so long since I has Miracle Whip I don't honestly remember what the hell it taste like. The only thing I seam to remotely remember is that it is sweet, am I correct?

It is sweet. My aunt used to use it on her otherwise superb potato salad but the sugar ruined it for me. Now I make my own version of her salad but with... Hellman's. And now I live in the South where everything is laced with sugar, from "sweet tea" on down.

I am for both. I don't think I'd make any homemade salad dressings with miralce whip, and I don't buy the bottled stuff anymore. Same with dips.

I do think Miracle Whip's tang is tasty on BLTs, turkey, bologna, and tomato sandwiches, most cold salads like egg, tuna, and potato.

But yes I would agree homemade mayo is the best.

My mom always comments on how certain dishes of mine taste better than hers, such as ground bologna spread, potato and macaroni salads, etc. The only real difference is that she uses MW and I use Hellman's. Of course, she tells me she likes the stuff and will never change. :-)

If it doesn't say Hellman's on the jar, it doesn't pass these lips! They don't have Hellman's out west. They have Best and I wouldn't believe anyone who tried to tell me it was Hellman's.

@izatryt--I thought that Best's and Hellman's were the same brand, produced by the same company, only that different names were used in different regions of the counry.
@LunaPierCook--my mother too was a FANATIC about Miracle Whip, I think (although she would never admit it) because it has less calories (70 versus 100 for regular mayo). Yet she refused to use Hellman's Light because it was 'not natural'--all the while praising take-out slaws and such from delis proudly proclaiming the used only 100% Hellman's.

As I've grown older unfortunately I can't really tolerate mayo at all, though I used to adore it--for those who like the Miracle Whip tang, probably some tarragon would be a nice substitution in reduced fat Hellman's.

They both have uses when I prepare different items....I prefer Mayo on my cold sandwichs and french fries, and use MW for sauces and spreads..

Hellman's all the way. Though I am not a fan of food with mayo that is served warm/hot.
I have never liked MW, it is way to tangy. But my husband loves it. He keeps sneaking it in the house.

mayo only. no mw, ever. good mayo, though.

Yeah, we got into this argument a couple of months ago here at SE. Nobody agrees, apparently. But frankly, I like them both, usually in different places. They're basically the same thing except that MW has an additional sweet-and-sour taste (try adding sugar and vinegar to mayo and you'll see).

Why worry about it when there are so many more important things--like what sense is there in white chocolate?

While growing up my mother bought whatever was on sale.Talk about confused pallets. One week my brother and I would love something and the next time it didn't taste right. We never understood until we got older, mayo and MW tasted different. Consequently, I have to keep both on hand to this day, my tuna and onions has to have mayo and my tuna and sweet pickles has to have MW, and my bologna and tomatos has to be MW and on and on. One thing they both have to be good quality brand names. I can even tell in a restaurant if they have a cheapie dressing. And diet GROSS!!!!

I love them both equally for different reasons. But if it's mayo it has to be Dukes, nothing beats it, it's as close to home made as you can buy.

Hellman's - on the Left Coast/Best Foods - is my favorite and in my frig at all times.

But for family reasons, I'd love to learn how to make "veganaise". Do you have a recipe for it?

I keep both on hand. I like MW for most sandwiches and tarter sauce. Mayo is better in potato salad and many other dishes where the zing of MW isn't wanted. Also, you can dress up mayo with garlic, chipotle, lemon and many other spices and flavors. MW pretty much is what it is.

@Heart ~ That's what they say, but I remain a non-believer. We lived in SLC for 3 years and I never touched the stuff!

^ weird! Maybe they use a different formula to suit regional tastes--someone should do a taste test who has access to both Best's and Hellman's!

Wow, I thought this thread would be a war. I'm surprised to see so many people in the middle ground who use both, giving sound explanations for the applcation of both. But I would not like them to make me a sandwich or a batch of potato salad.
I'm scared of homemade mayo, but when I made it in the 80's before worries about yolks, it was way better than bottled. Just a few years ago we discovered Costena brand at Hispanic supermarkets; that's the closest-to-homemade brand we've had, and now we buy no other. Wish we could try Duke's.

I've lived in California and Kansas, and Best Foods and Hellman's are the same. It's the only commercial brand I use- as well as the only brand my mom bought when we were growing up.

I see "Kewpie" mayo in the Japanese food stores and I'm tempted to try it, but then I remember my disappointment every time I've bought something that wasn't Best Foods or Hellman's.

Hellmans only..... Miricle whip is too sweet.

?: does MW contain HFCS?

answer: Google says yes. So, if you need a MW fix just add some sugar and vin to yr mayo and be done with it. F HFCS!

At the bottom of the Hellman's site in the fine print it actually says the following:

"Hellmann's® is known as Best Foods® west of the Rockies. Click here to visit the Best Foods® site."

Follow the link, and you get the exact same web site except in reverse.

mayo all the way!

Have you ever made your own mayonnaise? I'ts fast easy and tastes a world better then any store bought mayo or miracle whip.

Another Duke's fan, here. I can't stand Miracle Whip. Too sweet. Duke's is nice and tangy! Now that I live in California, my mom sends me regular shipments of Duke's and White Lily flour (that she's stockpiled since before "the change"!!)

Different strokes...and if you dared to serve me Miracle Whip I'd probably have one! We often had MW in our house when I was a kid, just because it was significantly cheaper - and when things got really tight, Mom had a recipe for a "boiled dressing" that was essentially homemade MW. So glad those days are gone for good...

Homemade or Hellman's/Best Foods, that's me. I really like Duke's, too, but it's not available here in SoCal.

Hellmans is the only kind I buy. I will eat other kinds of mayo if they are served to me. However, I absolutely cannot eat miracle whip. I can't stand the sweetness.

One of my biggest pet peeves is to ask for mayo on a sandwich at a deli/restaurant and be served miracle whip instead. It can't be scraped off -- the taste is still there. This is a very serious crime. If mayo is not available I would simply choose another condiment (or none.) Do not choose for me. It is not acceptable.

I admit I have very strong feelings on Mayo. I am tolerant of those on the other side of the isle who use MW. We can co-exist. We need to agree to disagree and move on. We live in a free country where people can choose to worship the condiment of their choice. We need to respect each other's differences.

The only use in my house for MW is the turkey sandwiches on squishy white bread with sweet relish after Thanksgiving. I buy a tiny jar of it for that purpose and pitch it afterward. It is a flavor memory that I need to bring back some happy family times with my Mother when she was living.

I had to chuckle as I read the posts. I made some tuna salad for my BFF and she raved as it didn't nearly taste like hers; she wanted to know what I put in it to make it taste so good. I named Hellmann's mayo as the main ingredient (also use white meat tuna-makes all the difference) and she's been using my recipe ever since. I thought everybody on earth used Hellmann's. Of course, my mom always used MW as it was cheaper back during the war years - and I can't stand the stuff. Ewww, but I never told her that - didn't want to get slapped in the mouth (smile).

It depends on what you grew up with. We had Hellmann's. I had a bologna sandwich at a friends house that had MW. I could not belive how foul it tasted. Way too sweet.

Miracle Whip is on a list of foods I longed for as a kid: Wonder Bread, Yoo-Hoo, Kool-Aid. Stuff my 70s health-nut mom would never buy. She did buy Hellman's.

Not sure I ever tried MW as an adult but it had such mystique on the rare occasion I tasted some at someone else's house back then.

Dukes and only Dukes. Even as a child I hated MW.

I don't care what anyone thinks. I love Miracle Whip.

I can take or leave mayo. It is easy to leave it because it is any easy way to cut the calories out of sandwich. I will risk the calories from Miracle Whip. I like light Miracle Whip just as well.

Tuna recipe: I tablespoon of Miracle Whip per 1 can tuna. Add whatever else you want. Chopped tomatoes are good.

I can't think of a restaurant that offers Miracle Whip. Why?

@suegsf: i've never made the stuff, but you can buy it at hippie health food stores, whole foods, etc.

my favorite brand lives here: http://www.followyourheart.com/vegenaise.html
