Ice Cream Cake

OK, ice cream cake isn't one of my favorites but I am charged with having to purchase one. Since I am required to purchase & then eat some, does anyone have suggestions on where to buy an ice cream cake that goes beyond the usual mediocre suspects? Thanks.

The best non-homemade ice cream cakes I have had as an adult have been from independent bakeries, mixing high-quality ice cream with really good cake. Lots of independent ice cream shops make them too, if there is a good ice cream parlor in your area--you could pick your favorite or the birthday person's favorite place.

I liked Carvel as a kid, but have heard that they have gone way downhill (haven't had one in more than ten years). But I also know Haagen Dazs makes cakes:

I haven't had one, only seen 'em advertised, but how bad could a Haagen Dazs cake be?

Carvel omg when I was a kid I would beg for one.
It is by and large the best formula for ice cream cake.
They have them everyplace here now.

Coldstone's ice cream cakes are freakin' awesome.

Another vote for Carvel, although it's been years. I thought the one in Trenton, NJ was the only one. Just checked and it's a franchise. Wiki says the grocery story version is not the same product. I loved them as a kid - hopefully they haven't changed much.

I second Coldstone. Of course, I'm biased because the owners of the Coldstone near me will give me free cakes. But they're good and you can customize everything.

A few year's ago my friend had a coffee and chocolate flavored ice cream cake from Cold Stone and it was delicious! Of course, even if they fall under the 'mediocre' category, I'm still partial to the good old DQ ice cream cake (I love that creamy "icing" they have on it!)

If you have to buy one and not make it, I'd go with Coldstone. Their ice cream is wonderful and it would stand to reason that their cakes would follow suit.

My friend Rosie made up this recipe. I whined and cajoled until she relented and submitted the recipe to Gourmet. It's definitely a labor of love but the resulting cake is incredible.

Carvel tastes like plastic. The ice cream is tasteless and the icing is horrible. Dairy Queen is disgusting. Better to go with a local ice cream parlor's version -- if you have a Marble Slab or Cold Stone Creamery, go with those for sure.

I've heard that Carvel is good or bad depending on where you're from. I'm from the Midwest where Carvel is subpar but on the East Coast, it's supposedly quite good! Anyone care to weigh in?

Shame you are having to buy one.... what my family always did for birthdays was this:
A two-layer cake. Once cooled, scoop out the insides of the bottom layer, leaving only a cake "shell". Then spoon softened ice cream into the "shell" and place the other layer on top. This can then be frosted more or less as usual. Tasty!

bake a flourless chocolate cake. put it in the bottom of a springform pan. top with melted ice cream. freeze.

I have to agree with Keight, or buy a really decent cake at a bakery, put it in a pan and add the ice cream. My vote for decent ice cream cake is the Marble Slab Creamery. That, or some other premium ice cream shop. Good luck!

Mmmph. If Coldstone's cakes aren't a lot better than their ice cream, I'd go in another directions. I fnd it gummy-textured and not well-flavored, just a base to hold the mix-ins together. If there's someone in your area that's making ice cream, sort of like an artisan baker, see what you can do with them.

where do you live? Herrell's in Harvard Square makes the best. No cake, just ice cream with layers of cookie crunch or the chocolate bar of your choice layered in between..
