Good eats from Costco?

So I just joined Costco. The greeter asked if I'd just moved to the area, then acted as though I was some mad eccentric who'd finally decided to have the electricity connected after 8 years. OK, I've finally joined Costco. What's yummy there?

33 Comments:

They have jalapeno stuffed olives. I love'em! The baked stuff is pretty good too-- cakes, muffins, cookies. It's the only place I found that sells tri-tip in Michigan too so that is a plus. Also, the snack bar serves up some yummy snacks such as hot dogs, pizza and chicken bakes. I don't eat any of the meat stuff anymore but it's all good quality and it's very inexpensive. I believe a hotdog and pepsi is like 2.50.

Enjoy your cosco!!

Cabot cheddar--great cheese. Chicken sausages in various forms, generally non-antibiotic. In the freezer section, I've had my eye on a 3-pound bag of sockeye, indiv. wrapped in 4-oz. portions, for 8 bucks a pound (but haven't invested yet). Sam Adams Boston Lager, Becks. Kronos Pita (big package), organic free range chicken broth, and a weird spinach dip that's actually good. Poland Spring water in large quantities if you live on Long Island and don't quite trust the tap.

On your way out, stop and get one of their kielbasas and smother it with kraut, onions and pickle relish. You'll never go in the front door again...

I like the bakery stuff, cookies ,croissants, the cheese Danishes, pies, cakes.

deep breath, ok go
Butter 4 1 lb boxes for 7 bucks
eggs in bulk
sour cream a huge vat
dual packs of heavy cream
the cheesecake factory limoncello torte (not a cheesecake) buy this then make it yourself or buy it when you are in a rush
HUGE strawberries
2.99 whole pineapples
huge bag of spinach
the lemon meringue tarts OMG sooo good
the huge chocolate cake (its not bad for 15.00 it feed at least 10)
feta cheese in big block or crumbled
boneless pork ribs I buy these 3 packs at a time 2.39 a pound
rotisserie chickens now 5.99 still great everytime
greek pasta salad with rotisserie chicken (buy once then make yourself)
HUGE Pizza 8 bucks HUGE and not too shabby
mini cream puffs frozen, thaw these and dip them in ganache on the quick
10 lb bags of sugar, brown sugar, granulated and 10x
cheap spices, bottled for costco good quality its not penzeys but its good
decent tzaiki and falafel kronos pita
lately our costco has olives vendors and the olives were very good
kirkland ravioli (made by Seviroli) are pretty damn good
Every 10 days I go without fail

Is it worth it to join Costco when it's just my BF and I?

I haven't had anything bad from Costco. I used to go a lot with my mom when I lived at home.

I'm with Jerzee: The rotisserie chicken is great. And so are the Ravioli's! Mmmm

@Jerzee: Shut up! They have Cheesecake Factory Torte there?! I think I want a membership just for that reason!!

Costco lover here.........great domestic and imported cheeses.....meaty pork ribs.......reasonably priced peanut oil........save a bunch on coffee....great prices on prescriptions......got my hearing aids at a decent price with incredible follow-up service.....gasoline usually a dime or so cheaper......

ok, don't eat it but Stretch-Tite plastic wrap is a superior product. America's Test Kitchen thought so also. Install the zipper thingy on the box, makes life so much easier.
cheese, glorious cheese........Tillamook extra sharp cheddar, and there is a Cabot Habanero, very yummy HOT
Mrs. May's snack stuff, all natural nut + seed concoctions
nuts
cereals
pickles
condiments
and the non edibles; paper products, etc. are large quantities but at a much lower cost.
and agree w/ 1stmakearoux, cheaper gas makes it more worthwhile to go.

I hate to admit it but I am a costco shopper as well. Their Ribs are really good. Jarlsberg is like 6 bucks a pound, they have these sandwich wraps that are excellent if you are having last minute party. Made fresh daily.

@butrflygirly--It's only my husband and myself, and we think it's worth it. Not just for the food, but all the other stuff, like gas, hubby's contact lens stuff, booze, rx, electronics, etc.

It seems like I've always had a Costco membership. My parents had one, then bought one for me when I went away to school. Even as a single gal, it was worth the cost of membership. Now, I'm married, two dogs, no kids and we go to Costco about twice a month, more if we entertain.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil, organic
Organic LowFat Milk (1%)
Butter (unsalted, quarters)
Philadelphia Cream Cheese
Red bell peppers, $6 for 6 medium sized peppers
Bacon
Baby Spinach
Romaine hearts
English cukes
Coffee
Tea
Sugar
Brown Sugar
Honey
Chicken Thighs or Breasts, vacuumed packed two to a bag, to keep in the freezer
There's a frozen pizza with black olives, onions, and three cheeses that is so good. We keep a box in the freezer for late night munchies or whatever.
And I can't tell you how many times I've been to parties and have seen the hors d' oeuvres from the freezer section of costco--I'm not slamming them, they were tasty.
Oh! we buy these flatbread cracker type things found on the chip aisle. So tasty and goes with a bazillion toppings. Great with hummus. I think it's called Suzie's flatbreads. It's in a red/orange box, with yellow lettering. I noticed there is an organic version from another company, same price, for half as much, but there are lot more seeds and stuff on the crackers...might check it out next.
Jumbo vat of white vinegar for cleaning.
Parm Regg or Grana Padano prices are better than anywhere else.
Pacific Organic Chicken Broth, pantry item, I like to make my own chicken stock, but if I run out, I don't mind using this stuff.
Yes, those frozen cream puffs are good, esp if the center is still super cold, dipped into melted chocolate. I love adding this to a chocolate fondue bar.
Speaking of chocolate bars, the Haagen Dazs ice cream bars.
Ghiradelli brownie mix
Dried Shitake mushrooms
Sun dried tomatoes
Montreal Steak Seasoning
Whole peppercorns
Kosher salt
Canned tomatoes for the pantry

My list is getting ridiculous. I buy whatever I can from Costco. Generally, it's cheaper than anywhere else. I'm also the kind of person who loves to stock up. Nothing makes me happier than a well stocked, well organized, all lables facing out, pantry. Then there's that moment, when my husband will open the pantry doors and say, "God, there's nothing to eat."

Not to go too far off topic, but I just love the Kirkland 550 thread count sheets. Super deep pockets. Fine hand, almost silky. Will wrinkle if you don't remove promptly from the dryer, but otherwise, just lovely.

Marcona almonds!! And Maroni (?) dried apricots.

@wookie: Thanks! I used to love going there with my mom-I know, weird, but what can I say? :) I know I go to the Liquor Store that's in front. Good prices-just like BJ's.

Its my opinon that Costco has great food testers, and merchandise buyers. Everything, seems to be the best tasting and the best quality, you can find. Because of the large size packaging, it is great for a large family, small business. I am retired and I have to be careful to stay on a budget, so far I have trouble getting out the store without going over, I start with a list but there is always something new. The produce prices are really good but there again the sizes are large, so I share with my family, I hate for anything to go bad,or go to waste. Have fun,it was my favorite place to shop for 28 years.

The hot dogs from the snack bar are absolutely delicious. And cheap, of course.

Wow, what a lot of great ideas! Cheeses and nut mixes sound especially appealing. Thank you all. I'll need to go back soon!

My mom has nicknamed dad the king of costco. We have been very impressed by both the price and quality of the products kirkland produces and the name brand things. Some favorites:
Salmon- fresh and frozen bagged organic
Steaks
Frozen shrimp
Frozen white meat grilled chicken strips
Avocadoes
Kirkland soy milk
cereal
muffins, pies
kirkland storemade granola
sabra eggplant spread
Kirkland lasagna
prepared mandarin chicken salad
tequila lime marinated turkey tenderloin (great on the bbq)
Italian Sausage
Sea Scallops
Brie
Muenster
yogurt
bertoli EVOO
fresh mozzarella
kirkland cookies especially oatmeal raisin and choc chip
Take advantage of free samples and try new products

Their smoked salmon is priced very reasonably and it is quite good. Ok, so it isn't Zabar's or Russ and Daughters, but it is quality fish. A friend made gravlax with it last week and it was great. It is fine on a bagel with cream cheese and red onion.
I love Costco. I live 15 miles from one so we no longer have a membership. That particular Costco has a liquor department with some pretty good wine and champagne (Nicholas Feuillete at a good price).
Enjoy... sigh.

We don't have a membership anymore, but I LOVED the chicken bakes...though you've got to wonder about a store that's so big and easy to get lost in that they have to feed you while you're there... =)

We just had a new Costco open about 9 miles from home. The other one is 16+ miles and was a pain.

6 heads of romaine (hearts) 2.69! We are salad freaks so this is good
Nuts
Cheese - one year we got a huge Brillat Savarin (triple cream brie with a layer of truffle paste in the middle!!!) for 30 bucks!
Eggs that are incredibly fresh
Dried mixed mushrooms
Olive oil
Prime and choice beef, great pork, lamb, & chicken
Wonderful seafood - especially when they have one of their seafood events.
Heavy cream in half gallon containers!

Off the food subject - cleaning supplies, counter fold wax paper sheets (that I cannot live without), giant poofy dog beds for under 20 bucks. Oh I love Costco.

(If you have hot flashes you'll love the produce room! Brrrrrrrrrr, it's great)

Costco is great for fresh meat and seafood, plus everything everyone else has already said. They also tend to have great produce. Plus, their customer service can't be beat. My mom bought a set of cookware there and ended up leaving a pot on the stove with beans in it for far too long--needless to say the pot was ruined. She brought it in to see if she could buy an individual pot to replace it, and Costco replaced the entire set at no cost.

It's amazing, i live by myself and I buy at Costco. I am going tomorrow in fact. Everything i buy has already been said... cheeses, fresh strawberries, baby spinach, asparragus, blueberries, the best tomatoes/cherry tomatoes, olive oil, ghirardelli brownie mix, cream cheese, dried mushrooms, hummus, spinach/artichoke dip, soymilk, pomegranate juice and spices. Even cut flowers - the bouquets are gorgeous.

I also buy office supplies - like printer paper. Actually once I went to buy my OptiFree contact lens solution (2 huge bottles for the same price of one medium one in Walgreens) and I got out the door with a new laptop computer. The one I am using to write to you now...

COSTCO is the BEST!!!!

welcome to the cult! just kidding-but really we LOVE costco. not just the foodstuffs-which are awesome. they put tons of research into what they buy/grow and have fantastic buyers. costco admits that they are more geared to the "discriminating" buyer than maybe sam's club/bj's which is just about a good deal. they have premium quality stuff for phenomenal prices. We have bought furniture, tv's, appliances, clothes, my husband's glasses, pool supplies, fresh flowers, diapers..need I go on? oh, and my husband & son have been known to go there just for lunch-hot dogs and raspberry smoothies!

I love Costco. Here's one thing I didn't see mentioned yet that you guys might like to try - buy their prime rib and dry age it in your fridge. It will taste so, so good. We did this not too long ago, and cut it into steaks and just grilled them. They were very tender and flavorful, and it was pretty cheap.

Other things I like at Costco: the Ling Ling potstickers (though I will admit the Trader Joe's ones are better), the salmon with crab mix, the fresh seafood, and cheap wine.

When you go, go hungry and have lunch there. As you shop there are tons of free food samples to try.

Yay! Costco! I was afraid they'd have a bad rep here, so I'm glad other people love it as much as I do.

Costco food court =

They have pretty good quality salmon. My family and I love Stacy's Pita chips in mass quantities...and we actually like the CostCo food court! Good deals for sure! And I'm with pjracz10, I love the free samples!

Chew on That

@Chew on That; Serious Eats man!!

Just a couple words of caution: Not everything is at Costco everytime you go - so don't dawdle when you see a great pack of antibiotic free sausage or instant yeast or something! And check prices: for a short period, 25 lbs. of King Arthur flour (love it) was cheaper at the local supermarket. We joined for the flour and sugar - and good cheap cat litter!
I found a wonderful bacon, just like the high-end butcher shops - but they haven't carried it again in over two years. I tried Kirkland - but find most Kirkland products way too sweet - the yougurt is achingly sweet. Even after rinsing and drying the Kirkland bacon, the primary taste was corn syrup. And here in northeastern MA, the meat quality and prices are not so great - I really envy the places with good tri-tip!

I am a Costco addict. Some of my food favs are: Kirkland trail mix, big bag of organic carrots, AmyLu chicken/apple sausages, apple and pumpkin pies (hubby can never resist those!), organic Disney animal crackers (so addicting), Lacey's toffee cookies, huge bags of Halloween candy, Kirkland almonds, big Boca burgers, Foster Farms honey roasted turkey deli meat, Fiber One bars, juicy strawberries, cheap 3 lbs. bananas, dried mangoes, Kirkland fruit snacks, frozen chicken breasts, Dino nuggets, the random local brands like fresh artisan breads, mooncakes, Sugar Bowl Bakery, etc (I'm in SF:)....

Non-food stuffs: books, esp. cookbooks! I always find something I "need," socks, Adidas running shoes, magazines (30 % off!), vitamins, laundry detergent, Swarovski & Lladro figurines, tv's, kitchen wipes, scrapbook paper, cards, holiday decor, gas, a casket, everything....

My favorites:

Big bags of Phillipine brand dried mangoes -- the perfect health-food "candy"!!!

Their steaks are to die for. We usually buy a whole ribeye for around $100-$120 and get 12-14 huge steaks from it. Vacuum-pack them with a Foodsaver and stock your freezer! The filets are excellent as well.

That huge chocolate cake is worth the whole membership price!

Everything else listed above! Wine, beer, frozen stuff, fresh veggies (although in bulk), kids' school snacks -- the list just goes on and on.

Oh yeah -- it's the perfect place to buy Halloween candy! My husband insists on giving out full-size candy bars. Buying them at Costco is the only way we can afford to do this.

We are probably 30 miles from the Costco here. It's worth the drive! We keep hearing rumours that we're getting one built nearer, but it doesn't seem to be happening. Sigh.

The Pot Stickers in the Frozen Food section are so easy and Delicious! They make any housewarming or holiday get together really festive and smart. Not your every day finger food. Make a dipping sauce with some soy sauce, mirren, rice wine vinegar, freshly grated ginger, scallions and a little chili oil ( if you want some heat). Good, good, good!

@heidi522---a CASKET??? ~falls off chair, laughing~

Here is a blog about Costco. Maybe you can go there and get some ideas:
www.addictedtocostco.com

Here's my list:
72oz of chocolate chips (I like to bake)
eggs 18 for $1.25
I've heard milk is cheaper there
spinach cheese ravioli from the frozen section is good
Kirkland rice snacks
Stacy's pita chips goes great with Sabra hummus
