Food curiosity
What food are you most curious about, but for various reasons are yet to try? Mine would be exotic Asian fruits (manosteen, jackfruit, etc). The main reason I haven't tried them is that I'm yet to find fresh ones. I don't want my first experience with fruits that millions of people enjoy daily to be spoiled by an inferior canned version.

Actually, the canned versions of those fruits are not always inferior, just different. I like the canned versions of many of the "exotic" fruits (snakefruit, lychee, mangosteen, etc.) that I've eaten while traveling. You can even find dried durian chips that are pretty tasty.
I say, try it canned (or dried). Why not?
On my wish list are things that are usually far too out of bounds morally. Caviar, for example. Buddhist no-no!

There's an entire cuisine segment that I am completely unfamiliar with; much to my shame. I think I'd love to try and get much more familiar with African fare. Methinks that might also extend up into the eastern Mediteranean region as well. It seems to me that there are a lack of entry level recipes available and often it seems that ingredients are not readily at hand either. Now I have to go do some homework on this...

I am not curious of eating anything exotic but when I see a really beautiful item on a cooking show, pastries, savory, condiments ( especially hot sauces and salsas). These are foods that are not unkown in some way to me, but rather how they prepare it with their spices, rubs, recipes. I am more curious on the origins of foods, the history.

I love to eat, but enjoy traveling, exploring new places, even more. The most enjoyable new dish to me is the one eaten at the country of origin, regardless of how funky the dish may sound in print.
With that said and all the recent talk about things ppl find disagreeable to eat, I'm most curious to try, but cannot for geographical reasons, a well prepared dog, whale, and hehe possum dish.

I am also curious about trying most any kind of fruit, being a fruit lover myself but still inexperienced in the way of many exotic, harder to find varieties.
I am also eager to try more native foods in Asia, Africa, Latin America, etc. This obviously goes along with my desire to travel more.
@Cassaendra, you should take a trip down south for the possum, you can find plenty of them in my hometown, and some do partake. As for whale, I have an Italian friend that likes to tease my Japanese friend about how amoral she is for eating whale. Talking about a clashing of cultures. But she swears it is delicious!

@LaurelE--I can remember my grandma cooking possum. It's a fatty, rich meat. Since it's a scavenger, you have to cage it an feed it for about 2 weeks so it doesn't have a really strong flavor. I'm taking her word for it, not that I ever tried it. It was NOT one of my curiosities.

@czken, I share your curiosity about African food. I got lucky moving to this neighborhood in Annapolis. I've become friends with one of the mom's on my street and she's from Africa and loves to cook! So far she's made me fried plantains and bean sauce, which is blackeyed peas, garlic, tomatoes and chilies. I think that's all, I didn't watch. LUCKY ME! She has a cookbook that she produced because people always seemed interested in her recipes. It's actually a very interesting read too. She sells them for $10 if you want one, I'd be happy to get one and send it to you.

@compoundbutter (unsalted ;~), thank you for the generous offer. Unfortunately, I fear that the postage to get it to me would far exceed the purchase price. For now I'll have to surf the net and hope I find some recipes that I can use with ingredients available in my rather parochial corner of the world.

AAH... have you heard of media mail? Books, records dvd's, all mailed ultra slow snail mail quite inexpensively. My daughter and friends and I use it often.

I have had endless conversations about wanting to try Asian fruits too! I've been itching to try durian and mangosteens. I just found out my friend knows of a grocery store that carries these on a regular basis! I finally get to try them!

I would love to try real Southern BBQ. Unfortunately, I don't really know anyone in the South, and from what I gather, you really need a local to take you to the good places. :)

Meat. I enjoy the flavors and textures of meat so much. The only meat I've ever been offered I don't like is beef liver. There are so many animals I have yet to eat, though. Turtle, goose, bear, shark, and snake are just the first few that come to mind.
And I have to say that Bambi and Thumper are gifts from the food overlord.

I would like to try various types of Meats-as well as various cuts of meat (meaning try something other than a Filet). My BF has been looking at some websites and I think we will start to expand out horizons. :)
I have also heard many good things about Sweetbreads. I would like to try that.
Two months ago I tried Fois Gras and thought it was just amazing. I was in culinary heaven. :)
