Favorite Turkey Sandwich Toppings
Just curious what all the rest of you like to put in your turkey sandwiches to spice them up. My personal favorite is cranberry relish, shredded lettuce and Monterey Jack cheese. I'd love to hear some new ideas!

Are we talking the weekend after Thanksgiving?!
Turkey, cranberry sauce-yes people, from a can- dressing, mashed potatoes, a little bit of gravy, all squished together between 2 slices of bread.
Mmmmmm. How long til November?

Funny, my dad just described his favorite to me earlier today: high quality local turkey, pesto aioli, avocado, field green, red onions and brie cheese on ciabatta.....
mmmm...mmmmm...mmmmm
My favorite is definitely more basic than that, I go for the very typical California type sandwich: avocado, applewood smoked bacon and jack cheese, on a nice SF sourdough roll or a fresh croissant. Coarse brown mustard, cool crisp lettuce, sweet red onion and tomato (if it's in season, otherwise I skip it).

Durkee's sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, havarti, whole wheat bread.

Mayo, salt, pepper on rye.

It alternates between chunky homemade guacamole on a whole wheat wrap or dijon mustard, roasted red pepper, and arugula on whole wheat bread.

Oooh, the croissant thing is making my mouth water.

Oh, and carolrsf--don't feel bad about the cranberries from a can. I prefer sauce made from fresh, but since they're only available 1 month out of the year, I'm often left with no other choice. :(
buffy at 11:34PM on 09/05/08
Funny, although I like to kick up my other sandwiches, I like my turkey sandwich very plain - white bread, lettuce, salt, and mayo.
GolfGirl at 11:54PM on 09/05/08
@GolfGirl is using my secret recipe but she is omitting the freshly ground pepper. Whole leaf or shredded iceburg lettuce; that's the only variable!

On a small Kings Sweet Hawaiian roll I spread on the bottom half mayo and sprinkle dill top with an ice berg lettuce leaf, Turkey and a mixture of whole berry cranberry sauce and horseraddish.
I could eat like a dozen of these........yummy, I'm gonna go make on right now.

Oh jeez Turkey is my favorits lunch meat of all times, I will eat it any way. But everyday eating I have 2 favorites;
I. Criossant with mayo (Hellmans) both sides, raspberry jam, Turkey, havarti cheese, and iceberg lettuce.
2. Spinach or sun dried tomato wrap spread with cream cheese, then raspberry jam, add turkey havarti cheese and iceberg lettuce, wrap is and devour.
Now if it's the day after Thanksgiving, plain white bread spread w/ Hellmans, the turkey, dressing, then lots of gravey topped with cranberry jelly, served open face. Oh God 2 and a half months to go.
pjracz10 at 3:45AM on 09/06/08
Oh I forgot, what is Durkee's?
pjracz10 at 5:36AM on 09/06/08
Durkees is hot sauce. Franks is another brand - but I think the two companies got in bed in the last little while.
An aside - if you can find whole cranberries in a bag, they freeze beautifully. I always buy a few bags when they are available and pitch them in the freezer - the nice thing is that you can take out a cup or so and make up fresh sauce whenever you want!
I second the sliced dark meat turkey, mayo on one side, cranberry sauce on the other, with maybe a slice of cold stuffing on crusty white or whole grain bread. Thank goodness Canadian Thanksgiving is in just over a month!

A turkey sandwich with brie, fig jam, lettuce, red onion and a tiny bit of dijon is quite good. Also, turkey with guava paste, spicy pepper jack, lettuce and red onion is another tasty option.
Yoi. I'm wishing it was closer to Thanksgiving now.

Fresh turkey on fresh sourdough...now add some basil aioli, avocado, tomato, bacon (I prefer applewood smoked bacon), maybe some baby spinach or arugula. Slice and enjoy........

I think I just fell into a culinary coma...all this talk about turkey sandwichs...(drooling like an idiot)
Markbb at 9:53AM on 09/06/08
Pesto with some good melty cheese and pepper and toasted is pretty tasty.
mmm Bacon and fresh spinach sounds good too.
I think I need a turkey sandwich for lunch.... now.
Good thing they haven't invented sell-o-internet yet.

Interesting. Durkee's dressing was an old fave of Mr. Meatloaf, and it was definitely not a hot sauce, but more of a mustard-mayo thing, as I recall. He likes it on turkey sandwiches, but we haven't seen it in dog's years.
And how about the most important question: How insistent are you on real turkey as opposed to the extruded turkey loaf junk? About the only over-the-deli counter I find adequate is Boars Head low-sodium (and I am WAY not a low-sodium person!) turkey, which actually has some turkey flavor. Even Harry-the-cat knows it's The Real Thing.

There is the Thanksgiving sandwich (the beauty of which I was so pleased to discover 6 years ago:-)), with cranberry sauce, turkey, sweet potato mash and gravy (my OH even includes the sausage stuffing!) - I love using whole wheat bread for that and popping it into the panini maker for a couple of minutes.
Then there is a "regular" turkey sandwich, which also comes in different variations (the meat comes from the home-roasted turkey breast). In order of layers:
*ciabatta roll, avocado, turkey, freshly ground black pepper, cranberry mustard, brie.
*whole wheat bread, a thin layer of mayo, turkey, whole grain mustard, Emmentaler, greens.
Now I have a craving for a turkey sandwich, too!

I love Turkey. My absolute favorite sliced meat. I do it one of three ways (not counting post thanksgiving leftovers):
1. Turkey/sharp cheddar/lettuce on sourdough or rye
2. One petite panne rustica loaf from Trader Joes, lightly toasted and split, spread w/ boursin or alouette cheese, sliced turkey, (crispy bacon optional), roasted asparagus spears, sharp cheddar, and either raw baby spinach or arugula. Mmmmmm.......big enough for two.
3. roasted turkey slices (pepper turkey if possible), lightly spread w/ herbed cream cheese and roll up a spear or two of cooked asparagus. Not technically a sandwich, but a few of these make lunch!
StripeyChef at 1:02PM on 09/06/08
you have to include the stuffing! oooooh it is sooooo good. thank goodness thanksgiving for me is only a month a way.
lexophile at 3:03PM on 09/06/08
ok I guess I'm the weirdo, as usual, I dont care for turkey, (ducking) I usually spice up a chicken sandwich with avacado, honey mustard, maybe some wild boar bacon if I want true decadence, and some smoked cheddar.
huneybumper at 9:24AM on 09/07/08
OMG, so many yummy ideas. I have two turkeys in the freezer. I'm thinking about getting one out to thaw right now...
buffy at 5:12PM on 09/07/08
The cranberry relish sounds really good, but I agree that's more of a Thanksgiving thing.
My ideal day to day turkey sandwich includes:
turkey, wheat bread, tomato, lettuce, hot pepper/giardinera mix, black olives, Italian seasoning, a little oil and some vinegar. (And yes, it can be found at Subway).

Bacon, swiss, and avocado (I for some reason like pronouncing it "uh-VOH-cuh-Doh") or open-faced and warm with slices of cranberry sauce from a can and turkey gravy not from a can on top. Bonus points if either one includes the crispy, flavorful turkey skin.
I like homemade cranberry sauce, but only to eat by itself, not on my mashup sandwich. No berries for my turkey!
