I really enjoyed the 17 hundred 90 Inn, it's historical, with local food and a great atmosphere. The Pink House was decent, but definitely over-priced. There's two other meals I really enjoyed, but I can't remember the names of the restaurants!! One was in a big restored warehouse, and the other was a small bar/restaurant a few blocks walk from the water. I hope she has a great time, I absolutely adore Savannah!

Memorable dining in a relaxed setting: Elizabeth on 37. It is on the edge of fancy, and is $$$, but in my opinion is one of the best restaurants in the South. As a point of reference, my benchmark has always been Commander's Palace.

A tasty brewpub in a haunted building: Moon River Brewing Co.

The Crab Shack on Tybee Island gets a lot of hype, but I didn't like it. Food mediocre at best, atmosphere late '50's gone to seed. Stiff taxi fare just to get there and back.

We were at the Westin a week last May, and I don't think we had a bad meal along the historic riverfront.

The visitor's center is quite good for history (see the film) and orientation, and is the base for the open bus tour operators.

Be sure your mom knows about the city elevator between the main street level and the riverfront.

606 east cafe is no longer in downtown, but it was exceptional. also off of the downtown road there is an italian place on the right right before the road bears to the right which has excellent americanized italian food.

And if you are a foodie you can't go without mentioning Paula Deen's place, Lady and Sons, as well as her brother's place, Uncle Bubba's. Both are a can't miss in my book . . .

Try the Caraway Cafe. It's an awesome place, my friend Robyn runs it.

Definitely Check out Angel's BBQ. It's on a quiet sidestreet behind a Church. The array of hot sauces is dizzying, and the food is outstanding. You'll love it!

Also, Clary's Cafe is another Savannah mainstay that serves up wonderful biscuits and salami and eggs. A must go.

@spazgrrl - I've eaten there! Tell your friend I really enjoyed it.

definitely second on Ms. Wilkes, a lot better than lady and sons, get there early though, you have to wait in line. Also agree with non-rec of crab shack...blech.

thanks everybody, she just left and has her heart set on paula deen's! hyped up i'm sure..... i'll be in touch by phone so can give her some other options.....

all the places sound great, i may have to take a side trip one of these days....... mmmmm. :^) pooch

When is she going? I went on the Paula Deen Tour last fall when I was there and they gave me a card to use to make a "reservation" to eat at Lady & Son's - you don't have to wait in line supposedly with this card. We ended up running out of time (and loved Mrs. Wilke's by the way) but if your're interested in the card, i'll be happy to send it to you - nothing better than a happy mamma!

clary's for breakfast - great food

Hubby and I went to Lady and Sons several years ago, and it was Ok, but not great on average. There were some dishes that were great, and others that, well, dignificantly lowered the average by being just too greasy. If they're still there, the Crab Shack on Tybee Island is good.

I just had my 40th birthday there and I LOVED Clary's cafe for breakfast; so friendly and wonderfully authentic home cooking; Lady & Sons was great too, unpretentious and delicious. I'd recommend telling the host in advance that its an elderly visitor and could they please pull out some stops regards a table. I'm sure they'd oblige. They went overboard for us.

I have eaten at the Crab Shack for years and I think the food is good. Remember, if the word "shack" is in the name of a restaurant, do not expect anything fancy. You can sit on the deck outdoors, under the peach basket light fixtures and trees strung with white lights, watch the gators, look at the exotic birds, and people-watch. I highly recommend Sundae Cafe for a meat and sides lunch or a nice dinner. Fannie's on the Beach has awesome pizza and quesadillas. Doc's Bar has good sandwiches and fried shrimp. Hunter House is nice and quiet and serves yummy dinners. The best place for lots of inexpensive fried seafood is the Outback Cafe.

Sorry, y'all......All of the restaurants I mentioned in the above post are on Tybee Island.......the beach that is just east of Savannah......
