DC to Charleston, SC

Does anyone have any suggestions for food places driving from Washington DC to Charleston, SC? The drive is pretty boring down I-95, so I'd like to spice it up with some yummy food to look forward to! Thanks.

If you are going through NC and you see ANY sign for cookout PULL OVER!! and then order a cook out style burger tray with hushpuppies and cajun fries and a milkshake. You will be in heaven and I somewhere will be envious of you.

The first place that popped into my mind was Buz and Ned's bbq joint in Richmond, VA. About 2 hours south of DC. Only 3 minutes from I-95, so you can eat and hop right back on the road. Take the Boulevard exit as you approach Richmond. Just google buzandneds you'll get reviews, directions, etc. FYI parking is a little weird, but shouldn't be a problem. Indoor and outdoor seating. Uber-casual...duh, it's bbq.

If you have the time, I really like Millie's Diner. It's about 5 minutes from I-95 as it cuts through downtown Richmond, past the historic tobacco warehouses that have been converted into modern condos. The food is not typical diner fare so it will be pricier than Buz n Neds, but it will be great food served by some fun personalities. Despite the hole in the wall nature of the space, the clientele is pretty well-heeled. google them.

If you want to hit a little Vietnamese pho or bun, check out Vietnam 1 (horsepen rd & broad st) or Pho So 1 (rigby rd, right off horsepen). Not as convenient to I-95 as the other two I've mentioned, but for pho, they are worth the minor detour. Staples Mills exit.

My final suggestion, I give with some reservation. Edo's Squid. kinda hard to find, even locals miss it if they don't know it's there. BUT the food is very good. Italian Italian, not American-Italian. The squid, white beans and arugula is a must have item. If they are serving the white sardines, get it. On second thought, save Edo's for when you're visiting a local who frequents there.

Have a safe trip and let us know where you end up eating...Eat lots!

Definitely stop at the barbeque places the whole way down. Every region has something different. The SC mustard-based is my favorite. If you have a minute (and I really do mean one minute), you could stop by Pedroland (yes, this is a real place). It's this horribly tacky amusement park. Don't go for the food or the rides--go to gawk at the true awefulness. Find a Low-country Boil. It's a big pot of spicey boiled corn, potatoes, crab, shrinp, onions, and sausage.

These are really some great suggestions. Thanks so much! I hope to give a review once I get back!

aunt's sarah's pancake house in wilson, just north of richmond is an absolute must.
