I was wondering if its possible for a chef to get a writers block, only instead of with his writing its with recipe developement. I dont know if its a normal thing and im freaking out! Know what I mean???

Oooohhhhh hell yes!! I get "cook's block" all the time. It is bound to happen every now and then and I know many other chef's who get blocked as well. We try and get together about twice a year and share new recipes and ideas, what are hit or misses that really helps a lot.

FYI, I'd bet that most of us here are cooks rather than chefs.

Chef's block isn't so much about going blank as it is about never changing your menu or just doing tried and true (read: boring) classics.

Nope. My client's are very picky and would not even look at "tried and true, boring classics" let alone eat them, unfortunately for me. That is why I sometimes have a block.

Every now and then it will take all 3 of us to figure out what we want for dinner, and sometimes it just "evolves" as we get in the kitchen.

I am somewhat of a whack job though, I try to make sure that we have at least 2 or 3 totally different dinner recipes a week. Last week I think we did 4! Keeps the boredom down and the brain firing on all cylinders.

But there are still those nights when nothing creative happens.

I hate it when you are hungry but can't make up your mind on what it is you want to eat lol.

"Block" is a risk of any creative occupation. When something like that happens to me, I detach myself from the situation, take a breather and then return to it.

In the case of a professional chef, maybe serve a couple of variations on favorite established recipes. Eventually, you'll spy an ingredient and the glow of the light bulb over your head will require sunglasses.

Thanks I feel much better, and @ dbcurrie yes I know that there are minimal chefs on htis blog but I tried to put the "Cooks Block" idea into an understandable context...I myself definately isnt considered a chef.
