Anything special in Buffalo/Niagara Falls/Ontario area?
My husband and I are planning a long weekend get-away on the Canada side of Niagara Falls. We'll be flying into Buffalo, NY. One of our favorite hobbies is, of course, eating! Any ideas?

Google "Niagara on the Lake" I am from southwestern Ontario and am going to the falls/on the lake for a few days after we have our wedding this weekend. Niagara on the Lake has the best restaurants and wineries. Hands down. I've been there enough times to know! (mind you it's been 5 - 10 years since I have gone) Be careful with the niagara falls tourist area, Clifton Hill is great but if very very touristy - and I find you can't get a real nice authentic Ontario meal from there. Niagara on the Lake isn't to far - hope this helps! Actually heres a link...

One more thing - if you are up for a great wine tour, I went here, http://www.chateaudescharmes.com, and it was a very memorable experience!

It's where I live. (The US side) It's an issue to cross in and out of Canada now besides the long traffic wait at the bridges, you must have a passport or Drivers Liscence AND Birth Certificate. The Seneca Niagara Casino in downtown Niagara Falls has a top notch Steak House called the Western Door. There is also a Asian and Italian ( all fine dining) as well as some casual restaurants. If you are going to the Canadian side there is a Brazilian Restaurant near the Falls, If you have never been to one it is amazing. It's called Copacabana. Have fun be prepared for the bridge traffic!

There are ALOT of things special in the Buffalo/N Falls area. I'm from this area as well.
This is a great guide to dining in the area:
http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/restaurant.guide/
You can choose which area you'd like to dine in, and it lists reviews from various diners for each restaurant. I use it all the time.
When crossing the border, the Rainbow bridge in Niagara Falls, NY is your quickest bet....it usually has the shortest lines.
There are also fall festivals all over the place. I'd suggest picking up the Buffalo News when you get in, and checking out the Gusto - entertainment section - for a list.
The suggestions for Niagara On The Lake, Canada are spot on as well....great restaurants (my fav is Epicurean Bistro for casual...great homemade food!).
Have fun, and enjoy our great region! Please come back & let us know how your visit was. :-)

There are a million and one good restaraunts to eat at in Niagara Falls ON. If you are looking for a fantastic Italian Dining experience check out Casa Mia http://www.casamiaristorante.com/ it's one of the few places i'm comfortable suggesting to anyone who comes to Niagara. It's fine dining to be sure, but it's very good.
There is a fantastic little Vietnamese place on the corner of Drummond and Dunn st. It's Called Vivians Dining lounge. It's located in a strip mall and the decor is about as clicheed and tacky as you could hope, but the food is fantastic, and very affiordable to boot. I eat there as often as i can.
Another great place to check out in located in St.Catherines (about a 15 minute drive) on St.Paul street in teh midst of downtown. It's called the merchant Ale house. It's a microbrewery with some very respectable pub grub. It's not quite a gastro pub, but it does make some fantastic dishes and the quality is par none. They take their food as seriously as their beer. I strongly suggest their messy platter and they do a wonderful fish and chips that stands out above what most will do.
For a quick and easy lunch, i suggest the tartan bake shop on montrose rd. It's located in an industrial plaza with a metal fabrication plant. It's slightly hard to find, but it's one of the best kept littel secrets in town. This is a baker who is a master of his craft making some of the best meat pies, pasties and other traditional scottish dishes i have ever had.
Drop me a line for some more suggestions, i'll get back to you when i've a littl emore time.
