You either love it or you hate it...

Piggy-backing off the 'food you wouldn't serve company' thread, it seems like there are certain foods that divide rather than unite--i.e., for the most part (always exceptions) people have passionate feelings either for or against the taste of these foods:

Liver and other unusual cuts or types of meats (people either go to the ends of the earth for the best sweetbreads or tripe or run for the hills if it is served)

Licorice--either they throw out all of the black jelly beans or send away for the best of the best

Anchovies (especially on pizza) and sardines

Cilantro

Garlic and oninons

Pistachio ice cream (I'm thinking of brooke, here!)

My big aversion--coconut! Ick! But I see it everywhere, and I know people adore ie passionately

Cincinnati chili or chili with/without beans

Chicago deep dish pizza

Spam (those from Hawaii and those not from Hawaii)

Very sugary candies (gummi bears, Sweet Tarts, etc)

39 Comments:

papaya
raisins
mayo
figs
sardines

I agree with all of those. How 'bout:

Peeps, coffee, certain strong cheeses, whipped cream (fresh, reddi whip, and cool whip types), pudding, fennel (going along with the licorice thing) veggies like brussel sprouts, mushrooms, avocados, oatmeal raisin cookies (love the raisins or leave em.)

I'm sure there are more, but these stick out to me (and, just for the record the only thing on my list that I really hate are mushrooms :) )

those are some good ones...
I LOVE cilantro and licorice (not together)
there's also a certain amount of people that detest coffee and beer (while others drink to excess =))
Also, although not common here in the states, Marmite or Vegemite is known for being a love or hate (personally its really disgusting).

Some other controversial items:
- meat, in general ;)
- steak doneness
- sashimi/carpaccio
- mustard
- Manhattan clam chowder vs. NE clam chowder
- seafood

Hehe, the mention of marmite made me giggle a bit and choke.

@Heart - hehehe, as I was reading the words "pistachio ice cream" I exclaimed, "How can you not love it!"...and then I saw your parenthesis:-)

But yes, yours is a pretty accurate list, and I agree with everybody else's additions. My contribution:

*beets
*white pepper :-)
*some other stronger spices, such as cumin
*some strong-smelling/flavoured fruit such as papaya and durian

i'll respond to what was originally posted, i like those ideas:

Liver: love it, but the only way i've only had it in my 20 years of life is chopped w/ some hard boiled egg

Licorice: disgusting imo

Anchovies (especially on pizza) and sardines: delicious, even in caesar salad dressing

Cilantro: love love love

Garlic and onions: great combo

Pistachio ice cream (I'm thinking of brooke, here!): i'll say love it but only the really good kind...i enjoy ciao gelato's version

My big aversion--coconut!: ew, especially in macaroons

Cincinnati chili or chili with/without beans: NEVER had this...but i do like chili?

Chicago deep dish pizza: love it (Says the chicagoan)

Spam (those from Hawaii and those not from Hawaii): nope, won't do it

Very sugary candies (gummi bears, Sweet Tarts, etc): i'm a chocolate person, never liked this stuff even as a kid. i especially hate/hated sour patch kids

I haven't seen anyone address one of the biggest debates in the midwest -

Mayo vs. Miracle Whip

Wine is another I've come across...people will just say "I don't like wine"

- Asparagus
- Raw onion- I've noticed most people don't mind carmalized or cooked onions.
- Wine, believe it or not.
- Dijon mustard, "Too spicy and 'weird' tasting ..."
- Scallions.

Did you actually have a question, Heart?

Sorry, tmj529--just wondering if anyone had any additions--to my list.

And the Marmite is a great one, as is the Miracle Whip. Ditto the wine, thewrighttaste. And Cassaendra, I've been in rooms where the 'Manhattan Clam Chowder is not chowder versus the white soup disgusting' fight has nearly come to blows!

I also agree with the beets, Brooke29--and I forgot olives, especially green. I've known people who can polish off a whole jar of black or green olives, and others who react to a jar as if it were a snake or a spider.

how about stinky cheese?

Eggs
Jello
Salt
Bell peppers (any color!)
Tomatoes
Rice
Celery
Dill

tripe....and other offal.....

oops...sorry...missed that in heartofglass' original post.......

Mint
Organ meats
Cilantro
Flat Leaf Parsley
Curly Parsley
GREEN bell peppers
Gelatine-based desserts
Rice noodles

Melon of any kind. I simply cannot stand the taste or smell of watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe. Even the aroma of a Jolly Rancher Watermelon candy makes me gag. BF frequently tells the story about me making him spit one of those horrible candies outside, before I allowed him in my apartment.

oysters. sashimi. wasabi. truffle oil. eggplant. liqueurs. jalapeƱo. squid ink.

the only things i have a real aversion to in the original list are any gummy/sour candies and any fake whipped stuff. love anchovies, any stinky cheese, and anise! yum!

Meat (and even worse, offal of all kinds)

Cilantro

"fake" vegetarian meat substitutes

jello, or gelatin-based anything, for that matter

Cool Whip

White "chocolate" (don't get me started!)

Sugary, overly-sweet candies and foods

Miracle Whip

Keffir

Turkish Delight (yeech)
Green olives
Brussel sprouts

I will eat absolutely anything that anyone else is nice enough to invite me to, buy for, and prepare and I will enjoy it because I didn't have to think it up, acquire the ingredients, cook it and serve it. I like some things better than others, but a terrible meal lovingly prepared and offered is still a joy. I have trouble eating jello as I got sick on it as a child when the school cafeteria served some past its time. SInce jello isn't usually on anyone's menu for company I haven't been put in the position to decline it.

Cool, heart -- was feeling snarky at that moment. Didn't mean to be mean or hurt feelings.

I am not sure if this falls under "liver" or "offal" but how about liverwurst or braunschweiger? I love it, and I know others do.

I know a LOT of others who loathe it. It just doesn't seem like the type of food about which someone says, "Eh, I could take it or leave it." :)

Black licorice

Non-Koreans divide or unite around Kimchi. Personally, I love it with Korean barbeque and all the little side dishes.

Wow Pumpkin Bear, those are all on my favorites list! My all-time, most disgusting food product: Miracle whip, or for that matter, any mayo that is NOT Hellmann's/Best Foods. Before ordering any food off of a menu that has mayo, I ask the brand or to taste a sample. If it doesn't cut the mustard (or in this case mayo), I move on to another entree.

ok..I'm probably going to get rotten vegetables thrown at me for this one but...

I detest Fage yogurt but everyone here seems to LOOOOVE it.

I'm the only one I know who hates cheese and chocolate. My friends think I'm weird!

How about sauerkraut? I love it but know plenty of people who hate it. And here's my weird love/hate thing--chocolate, love. Peanut butter, love. Put them together, blech!!

@hammondcheese hahahahaha that's funny you mention Fage yogurt. I used to hate it, but since everyone always raves about it I thought last time I was at TJ's I would give it another shot. If you throw a ton of blueberries in it and a packet of Splenda, I promise it gets a lot better. You should try that. Also, I really really like anchovies. I would much rather eat a cesar salad loaded with the taste of anchovies. I also love Miracle Whip, and only recently started to like Mayo, but only homemade Mayo, not Kraft, etc. I also know a ton of people who dislike tomatoes, and my boyfriend HATES cilantro and eggs. Some other ideas:
- chocolate v. vanilla ice cream?
- bone marrow, foie gras?
- do you think there is a correlation between people who love beer and coffee and people who don't? A lot of people I know who don't like coffee or beer. (I love both)
- ethiopian food?

anchovies
clams
cottage cheese
black licorice - but i love Jagermeister...go figure...
egg WHITES- its a texture thing...i try to get over it but cant
and the gooey part of tomatoes...
oh and miracle whip makes me gag...

HATE: lima beans, asparagus (ruined by canned growing up), lamb (ech), black licorice, raisins, undercooked white part of eggs (absolutely has to be solid)

LOVE: anchovies, mayo, hot dogs, raw onions, sour cream, tuna fish

Love it or hate it:
-Sushi (which I actually love, and notice some people pretend to "like it" because its so hip)
-Thai food
-cilantro
-beer (i don't know anyone who just thinks its okay, they either love it or can't stand it)
-John Malkovich movies, wait that's not food...

OK AG3208....I dont like sushi so much either ....;(

Ewww... sushi. I hate anything that fishy. I tried sushi once. I litterally almost vomited! Someone mentioned pretending to like it. I couldn't even do that.
I dont like peppers of any kind or color. I wish I did. The different colors look so pretty!
I never liked peas or brussel sprouts.
I hate fresh fish but I love shell fish. Yum, shrimp, lobster, and clams! Yuck any kind of fish that doesn't come breaded in a box. Though I do like blackened swordfish. Hmm, go figure.
I like both Manhattan and New England clam chowder. But I prefer New England.
Caviar is pretty gross and way too salty.
And I despise black licorice and coconut. Coconut flavoring is okay, but actual coconut... well, I don't like the texture.
Oh and here is one I didn't see. Nuts. I only like (love) cashews and honey roasted peanuts. Again it is another texture thing for me. I dont like apple peels or cucumber peels for that reason as well. :-)

I have noticed that as I get older I do change my mind about things. I now like chopped chicken livers. And I have grown to love relish on my hot dogs.

im an absolute mustard addict...i have no less then 20 jars in my fridge! even some homemade ones (capers&anchovie whole grain!)

mayo, reminds me of snot

avacado(and anything even containing a speck of it) is like eating oily grass!

brussel sprouts, cauliflower, canned spinich....all untolerable and are banned from my home!

as far as ofal goes, i currently have a 2Kg can of Ox tongue w/jelly from Harrods in london that is awaiting a cocktail party so that i wont eat the whole damn thing!

Miracle Whip
those horrible things called "circus peanuts" (which are NOT real peanuts at all)
limburger cheese (I am sure a lot of folks agree there)
headcheese
that deli macaroni salad with the pimiento and Miracle Whip
"violet" candy squares
"Chopped Ham" lunch meat
Mortadella
Prosciutto

Mayo from a jar is basically a culinary version of Elmers Glue to me (although I tolerate it in deviled eggs and tuna salad). Real fresh mayo is a thing of beauty though.

I never met an okra that I liked - even deep fried it's hairy AND slimy - and tastes weird -what's there to like?

I tried head cheese finally cause I live in Greenpoint a very Polish nabe that thrives on all manner of pork product. I actually did enjoy it.

I tolerate and understand black licorice but only in small quantities.

I am a person that really should like blue cheese but I hate it. Can eat other stinky moldy cheeses (as long as the mold is the rind) so go figure. . .
I've been told that sea cucumber is gross by my mother who will eat ANYTHING so I stay away from that.

I think as offal goes I will stay away from mountain oysters and other - um delicacies of the loins, and sphincter (although I'm sure I've eaten them ground up in sausages - but hey - spice it right and shove it into a sheeps intestine and I'm so there).

Other than all that, I'm a fairly open minded and adventurous eater - I would even try fried grasshoppers and such.

Ooh nice topic! Here is my list of love it or hate it food items:

-scallops, octopus, mussels (and various other seafoods)
-pickles!
-brussel sprouts

We asked a sort of similar question on our blog: "What is the one food everyone seems to loves that you can't stand?"

Hillary
Chew on That

all of my friends and family except me and my dad dislike smoked salmon

Licorice - yuck!

Anchovies (especially on pizza) and sardines - again, yuck

Cilantro - in small quantities, otherwise it's awful.

Garlic and onions - love them cooked, not raw

Pistachio ice cream - Can't seem to wrap my brain around this one so I've never had it. The name throws me off.

Coconut - I like it

Cincinnati chili or chili with/without beans - never had it

Chicago deep dish pizza - looks messy

Spam - should be outlawed!!

Very sugary candies (gummi bears, Sweet Tarts, etc) - I like sweet, hate gummy. The gummy texture feels weird in my mouth.
