Where do y'all think we should eat in Cypress, Texas?
I'm heading to Cypress, Texas (outside of Houston) at the end of the week. I've checked out some of the great suggestions for Houston proper; however, I'll be spending most of my time in good ol' Cypress on this visit. Do any of you kind souls have recommendations for tasty places to eat? BBQ, Mexican/Tex-Mex, great burgers, a can't-miss donut place, even - any ideas are appreciated.

Of course, I'll recommend you make the short drive into Houston to eat. Tex-Mex: Original Ninfa's on Navigation, NOT any of the other franchises. Second is El Tiempo, part of the Ninfa's family (get the mixed grill, with tenderloin quail, shrimp, pork ribs, chicken). Third is Teala's (not to be confused with Tila's) for the best pork chops, carne asada and margaritas. Best burger (lunch only) is Lankford's, hands down. Don't talk to anyone else trying to tell you otherwise. For donuts, go to Shipley's on Ella Blvd. Been there for ages and the glazed ones literally melt in your mouth. The line from the drive-thru often backs traffic up past the intersection before it. For barbeque do Goode Company on Kirby. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and the jalapeno cheese bread is perfect with it all. For the gourmet in you, do t'afia, Monica Pope's amazing little place near downtown. Get the Tasting Menu, which features five courses paired with five Texas wines. Yes, I know, there aren't supposed to be any good wines in Texas, but Monica manages to find some that really, really shine. For pizza, you must, must MUST eat at Star Pizza on Shepherd. Homemade crust, sauce and fresh ingredients make the 45 minute wait worth every bite.
I could go on...email me through my blog if you want more info or have any questions. Enjoy your stay!

My cousin had Carl's Bar-b-q cater his wedding and it was some of the best I've had. The sides were delicious, too: they do some crazy potato dish with, I swear, every form of dairy known to man. Green beans were awesome with lots of bacon and garlic.
They are in Cypress, on Telge Rd.
My mom lives the next town/suburb over, in Spring. If you come just a little further to Hwy 249 and Louetta, try Los Cucos for some great fajitas and the most delicious green sauce. It's my favorite place to eat when I'm in town, and I think it's a lot better than Ninfa's.

although i agree with some of hungryinhouston's suggestions, i would not cross the block, let alone drive in from cypress, to eat at star pizza. i don't know why you would need to eat pizza in houston, but if you, either drive a little further up washington to candelari's, or go to dolce vita. and i respectfully disagree with his burger pick--go to the original christian's on i-10, or even the one in midtown. my number one recommendation for houston is always tony mandola's on west gray in the river oaks shopping center. order the calamari ala mama (off menu item--they will ask if you want the one with all the seafood on it, but i find the one without better) and know that you can order half portions of just about anything on the menu, unless it comes with a lobster tail, which they don't like to split.
of course, this doesn't help you with finding places in cypress, but i'm sure if you just ask around, the locals will be glad to steer you to the right places. if there is one thing texans are, it is opinionated about burgers, bbq, and tex mex!

I'm with carriebwc about Star Pizza, especially if you're coming from a high-caliber food city.
The only further suggestion I really have is to ask around (your hotel or any locals you encounter) for the best chicken fried steak in the area. It's definitely a Texas specialty, and I'm sure someone is serving up good CFS in Cypress.

There's no need to drive into Houston for great Candelari's food. There is a great location for the best pizza in Houston right in Cypress. 25680 NW Frwy right behind the On the Border restaurant at 290 and Spring Cypress. They have a killer lunch buffet and a great bar and patio for evening visits.
