Walmart steak
Setting aside for a moment the fact that Walmart is not the vendor one first thinks of when one thinks of steak, isn't it time to upate the ad? This seems a little dated:
"Summer is just around the corner..."
Then there's this:
"Genuine Steakhouse brand steaks are 100% guaranteed fresh.*
*Restrictions apply. Please see store for details."
I actually like Walmart, but not because of ads like this.

@Don Luis: Thanks for the heads up! The ad has been updated. In the future, the best way to let Serious Eats' editors know about copy errors is to email contact@seriouseats.com. Thanks!

What is up with Walmart steaks anyways? I keep hearing ads on T.V. Is there some big deal about them that I don't know about? I have been mail ordering my meats and sides from Omaha Steaks, their prices and deals are just too good to pass up, plus I am pleased with the product.

What is up with Walmart steaks anyways? .....nothing's up with them....just a PR ploy to get you to buy their steaks.....most of which are graded "select".....meaning that they are leaner than "choice"....which means tougher, drier, and less flavorful.....

Okay got it, I think I will stick to my gig then. Thanks.

I think it's a subliminal attempt to get one to associate "steak" with "Wal Mart" as opposed to the frequent association of "cheap EVERYTHING" with Wal Mart. One doesn't generally think "cheap" and "steak" go together. Like everything else at Wal Mart that seems like a good deal, there's usually a catch.

Off topic...
I don't see why steaks can't be cheap. Wal-mart prices are likely lower for items because of their purchasing power, manufacturing locations, and lower overhead.
Can you think of a grocery chain that has 3,000+ markets? Granted, grocery chains don't typically buy their meat directly from the feed yard, but through distributors so there is some discount, as opposed to a single person buying the same quantity that one would at a market.
With perishables, there shouldn't be a marked difference between where the product comes from, unless it's specialized, e.g., organic, wagyu. They all have to qualify within our government's standards, so cheap meat doesn't mean you're getting mad cow diseased meat, at least not on purpose, in the US. Size or prettiness may vary in fruits or vegetables, but meat...I don't know how it truly makes a difference. A filet is a filet, ground round has a range of %fat it needs to adhere to, and so on.
Of course, if you live in an area that processes a ton of meat like KS and TX, I'd imagine the price of meat is pretty good everywhere. I recall paying $6 at a restaurant 3-4 years ago in western KS for a thick-sliced peppered bacon wrapped filet grilled so rare that the bacon was raw in the center. It came with a salad bar and drink. That was the best damned steak ever. My husband got the bacon, minus a bite, since I don't really care for pork.
I can't speak for how Wal-mart steaks taste as I've yet to try it. I've sworn off of going to discount stores, in particular food (in the Cleveland area, Marc's and Aldi). The times I have gone, I've been disgusted with the way the food is displayed, slung in messy stacks with some items being out of date, or disgusted with some of the people I have encountered, customers and employees.
Shopping is like dining out for me; if the entire experience isn't positive, I won't return.

sorry, nothing in the meatcase appeals to me at walmart..... i don't care if they list it as prime or make it 99 cents a pound.... i just can't get
into the spirit of buying meat there.
i've noticed that their meat products are pumped up with "flavoring solution" also.
i think we need to buy our meats locally if possible.... the "feedlot" syndrome is turning the american consumer into the "feedlot" consumer.
walmart wants to be all things to all people.... sorry, i don't need
to be hooked on walmart for my food. bad energy.

The Trader Joe's phenomenon aside, I think you get what you pay for.
