Late Night Munchies?

As I sit here at my computer unable to sleep, while watching my wife's cat in the day bed having no such troubles. I was wondering what late night foods either help put people in the sleep zone, or just scratch a culinary late night itch. I think I'm leaning towards a "Fluffernutter". I'm sure the cat will be willing to help out with the milk part of that equation.....

I AM A LATE NIGHT MUCHIES POOPER BUT I will not snack at night, makes sleeping even worse. But....If I didit would have to be ice cream or cookies, whatever I have that is sweet in the house.

I have never had problems going to sleep at any time - day or night. I can even nap while standing up.

If I plan on being up playing games until 4-5 a.m., my snack of choice to relieve the late night food pang/itch (if I can step away for 15 minutes or so), would be...
- Spam sticks fried in Pietro sesame dressing and sriracha, served over rice, with Kewpie mayo on top
- ramen (Myojo Chukazanmai) with mustard cabbage, Spam, and shrimp, with menma (marinated sliced bamboo shoots) and a raw egg yolk (yeah, I throw away the white) added on top
- roast beef hash heated in a pan until browned, served over rice, with Kewpie mayo and ketchup and a raw egg yolk on top

I'm still depressed that for a city the size of metro Cleveland, I can't get Tulip luncheon meat.

Wow, Cassaendra! That list is making me hungry and it's not even late at night!

Usually I avoid eating late at night...unless I've been imbibing and I need a booze soak. For that we have stand-by items in the freezer. Frozen pizza for BF. Frozen shumai, rice and edamame for me. Instant miso soup in the pantry.

@Cass - I'm so jealous! I've had trouble falling asleep since I can remember myself, no matter how tired I am. At some point (depending on how late/early it is), my stomach may become quite achy and simply demand that I eat something creamy and/or carb-y to soothe it. In which case I may have one of the following:

*a bowl of ice cream
*a spoonful or two of sour cream
*half an avocado with salt
*a slice of rye bread with butter and sea salt

If I'm at home already, it's usually Bowl Noodle Hot. Gotta love the instant ramen.

Thankfully for the drunk stumble home, Seattle is full of late night grab n go eats - delicious tacos, falafel, fish n chips, pizza by the slice, hot dogs - man, how am I not 300 lbs??

I microwave apple juice (or cider when I can get it) with a cinnamon stick until it's warm - very comforting.
And, you can always add a swig of rum if you're really desperate.
Something about the apple and cinnamon.

triscuts, ritz crackers or oreos

sleeping is rarely a problem for me unless there's been too much imbibing prior to sleeping (alcohol is supposed to make you pass out, but now it just gives me the spins...and i drink so much less now than i used to!) but when late night snack cravings hit it usually needs to be something hot and cheesy and full of carbs - ie, pizza, nachos, or cheese fries (the latter one constituting a major portion of my college diet). though sometimes i have to change it up - last night, for example, it was a twix that got me to bed.

Yeah if I eat at night metabolism kicks in I be full of energy. Weird, one would think that it would be the opposite, I would get tired. But that is why I do not eat lunch at work (I drink smoothies ect) I want to nap if I eat. I will eat after work up till midnight that is my cut off time. Been doing this for 20 years now. But yeah unarta in my teens and college days we used to go to Dick's Drive In, The Dog House, and Beth's Cafe after a night out out. God the crap I ate then, surprised I wasn't the size of a small building.

Grilled Cheese

or

The Luther Burger

Bacon Cheeseburger with Krispie Kream Donuts for the bun.

@bentslightly Oh man you need to start a blog of its own on this one, very good subject. I will keep a look out for it. lol

a bowl of cherrios

Animal crackers dipped in peanut butter, a spoonful or two of ice cream, or handfuls of dry cereal usually do the trick.

Oooh depending on my level of snacherdness or if I'm up late doing work/studying my cravings vary:

-Wonder bread with fresh mozzarella and basil butter under the broiler
-Ritz crackers with melted Jarlsberg and portobello mushrooms
-Vanilla Bean ice cream with warm tortilla chips or popcorn

If you're having trouble sleeping, I've heard it's best to try something with a lot of carbs (which digest quickly and apparently make you feel more lethargic) as opposed to something with a lot of protein which might sit heavily in your stomach for hours. (i.e. from experience, handfuls and handfuls of trail mix right before bed do not help me sleep any better.)

Mostly I tend to gravitate towards warm liquids and sweet things, like warm milk/water and a cookie or two ;)
