I'll Eat It, But I'm Not a Huge Fan of _________

We've talked about what foods we refuse to eat, but what about those things that don't make you gag, but that you wouldn't go out of your way to eat? Maybe it's something that everyone loves, but that you just don't get that excited about?

For me, it's avocado, and lobster. If it's being served, I'll eat it, but I really don't get the big idea, the flavors just don't really appeal to me.

26 Comments:

Regular yogurt (not Fage, which I adore... the regular kind)

Brussels sprouts.... come to think of it, all sprouts.

Yellow Summer Squash -- I prefer, by far, zucchini.

Wasabi

Sushi

Milk Chocolate -- dark is so much better!

Tofu

Mesclun Mix

Brie cheese

I'm that way about squash and eggplant. I know there are wildly different ways of preparing each, with different results, but overall they just have that "blah" factor for me. I'll eat them, but I don't cook them.

@embolini9 - pass your avocado and lobster this way! Mmmm...reminds me of a delicious lobster medallion and avocado salad I had once.

Zucchini
Yellow squash
lima beans
Egg yolks

@embolini9 ~ Whatever hungry doesn't want, I will gladly take! ;-)

Applesauce. It tastes fine but makes me feel like I'm eating baby food. I prefer to eat whole raw apples or cooked apples in pies and cobblers.

Milk. I don't like to drink a glass of milk, but like dairy products in general. No, love dairy products period.

Broccoli. It's hard (for me) to find a good piece to shove down my gullet. I'm picky about the B-word.

Some sausages. They just suck here. I don't even get it. They sell andouille, but it tastes nothing like what the locals called "Louisana sausage" when I was a kid in the 1960s.

Whole wheat. I know, I know. But I don't care. I like my bread like my rice: white. I do like rye and "farmer's bread" from Germany etc. I think I have some kind of allergic reaction to granola-culture, which I don't think is as healthy as it is marketed, since the people advocating it look pale and sickly, sometimes.

Beer. I used to drink it a lot overseas, but have lost the taste. Every now and then, I'll drink one. Or half of one before the stomach says, "enough."

Frozen. I appreciate frozen vegetables during winter months, but anything else coming out of the freezer, I can't stand. But yes, mom, I did freeze some of last year's basil crop.

Factory ice cream. I'll eat it. Anytime. But it pales in comparison to home-made. When I was a kid, we had a manual ice-cream maker. Everyone took turns turning that handle. It was heavenly. These days, Cuisinart handles it quite nicely.

Imported cheese. This is a difficult one since I recently learned that imported cheese needs to be pasteurized (even minimally). I wondered why the cheese didn't taste as good as in Europe, even when it carried the same brand name. Now I know not to pay all that money for it; I've started researching how to make it at home.

Wine. I'll drink it with any tomato-based dish, but I really can't stand it and don't like it and drink it only to be sociable at dinner parties. I'm the ultimate wine snob: I critique it all!

Lomi lomi and poke: Some of it is just crap. Vendors: stop being so freaking creative with it! You don't need a buttermilk-apple-mayo-tarragon-cantaloupe sauce to mix in it.

Rocket: Ugh. It tastes like dandelions sprayed with DDT.

Jicama: I still don't get it, either with lemon juice or chile powder.

Flour tortillas: An American and northern Mexico thing. No thanks.

Chain restaurant food: Just kidding, moderators!!! :D

Steaks (beef). Now, I enjoy a good Brazilian steakhouse (although they have an incredible variety there and you can always decline whatever you don't feel like having, so it's certainly not "all beef steaks"). Moreover, I've been grilling more steaks than ever lately due to popular demand (my Other Half and friends), and have been enjoying them myself (only medium rare for me, please). But I will never order a steak or Beef Whatever (unless "whatever" is carpaccio) at a restaurant, and I probably wouldn't cook them for myself if I were single (in fact, I didn't when I was single:-)).

@Brownie--definitely agree about the milk chocolate. Give me real real dark chocolate any day. You get the flavor without a sweetness overload!

Honestly, I can't think of anything else. I think it's because I'm fairly picky to begin with, especially about eating healthy (yeah, despite the dark chocolate...). If I don't feel good about eating it, I won't-- even just to "tolerate" it.

Olives, dates, foods with figs in them (I'm still not sure if I actually like figs or not; the first one I had tasted like mushy sweetened grass, but I seem to be okay with Fig Newtons), avocado, melon (seeing it dominate fruit salads upsets me, though), most processed foods (although I hate how salty they are, and I know they're terrible for me), marinara...
I'm sure there are others that I can't recall at the moment.

Red meat. I could do without it for the rest of my life and be fine.

Swordfish. I can't figure out what bothers me about it as I'm a huge fish lover and especially love the meaty, steaky textures.

diet coke. My husband loves the stuff, and I really don't like it at all, but if he's got a cup and I'm thirsty, I'll steal a sip.

Ground beef (or other ground meats). It's a texture thing.

I agree 100% with the milk chocolate--when given a choice it's dark all the way!

Also (I'm taking this thread to mean 'food that other people have a bizarre love affair with that you''ll eat if given no other choice')

White bread
Pasta, especially cream sauces and ziti
Italian food in general
Subs
Mexican food (as rendered in the U.S.--ie tacos, burritos, enchiladas, refried beans)
Fruit-flavored ice cream
Gummi candy
alcohol in general
mashed potatoes

When I ate meat, long ago, I never 'got' sausage, steak, or ham on any level. And roast turkey at Thanksgiving--the fondness and obsession for that food has perplexed me since toddlerhood.

@Heart - same here regarding white bread and subs, thanks for reminding me! If not for my Other Half, I probably wouldn't ever buy either of them (come to think of it, I never do, my OH does:-)), but it's not something I categorically refuse to eat either.

Due to having parents who could't cook to save their lives: broccoli, califlower, asparagus, too many vegetables to name.
Also any tomato-based sauce, except on pizza.
And olives. Ok in or on something but i've never understood eating them straight up. I know, what's my problem?

Winter squashes (butternut, acorn, etc.).
Raw cruciferous veggies (actually, once you cook red cabbage it goes on my "I won't eat it at all" list)

There's probably more, but that's what comes to mind at the moment.

I asked my husband this question, since I couldn't wrap my head around what I actually tolerate. He said, "You're pretty stubborn, so I can't think of anything. You either eat it because you love it, or don't eat it at all." I responded, "True."

Reading the responses sort of lit the way to my middle ground on what I tolerate:
- wheat, rye, pumpernickel, etc. bread -- I only enjoy sour dough and Italian bread, and it has to be baked same-day
- bread crusts
- peas
- frozen and canned carrots
- all chocolates with cocoa
- various cheeses. I will not eat stinky cheeses like blue cheese, parmesan, romano, etc.
- battered and deep fried seafood -- what a waste of perfectly good seafood...unless it wasn't from the start!
- medium rare steaks, but that's about as cooked as I'll go with my steaks; otherwise, it gets sent back
- a few preparations of duck and chicken, but not all. I won't eat turkey.
- bacon
- yogurt
- milk to drink
- egg whites (I LOVE yolks, usually throw away the whites)
- garlic and onions, only if it's been cooked thoroughly and pretty much pulverized, otherwise NO
- dried parsley is tolerable, fresh isn't
- tripe

chinese food.

the american kind that is, i'd really like to try some authentic stuff but have not had the chance yet

Lamb, duck and lobster...I have no fondness for any of them, but if it is what the host is serving, so be it.

Fungus...seriously - once in a blue moon I will buy some white buttons, trying again to understand the adoration some seem to have for these things. I'll slice them into a salad, and it's "OK". I'm not as fanatical as I once was - not ordering any dish that contained mushrooms. But, if the pieces are too large and rubbery, off to the side they go. I kind of like the flavor - I have had some great cream of mushroom soups that were pureed to the point of no chunks. I just really hate the texture. Or rather - I've probably been exposed to too many nasty, rubbery versions that I can't get past those memories.

Huh...
I guess, not being all that picky to begin with, and being *fairly* open to new foods, this for me is a non-issue.

There are plenty of things I choose not to buy/cook/prepare, for health, moral, green or other reasons, but when handed those foods elsewhere, without the ability to pick and choose (buffet style etc.) I will eat most anything but those I have moral issues with. They may not be great, but they are edible.

Like if my in-laws hand me an overdone burger with american cheese on wonder bread and an iceberg salad I will eat it. I won't like it much, but it is not so repugnant I can't eat it. I would rather have juices left in my meat, dark greens, grains and a tastier cheese, but it is not the end of the world by any means.

I have just a small handful of foods I won't eat at all, so I get off easy on this one, thank goodness.

Definitely Tex Mex. I grew up on Mexican food, so all of my friends want to take me to "Mexican" restaurants and I have learned to just think of enchiladas with cheddar cheese as part of another cuisine.

Raw carrots -- love 'em cooked, can't stand 'em raw
Most melons -- cantalope, water, honeydew
Beets
Lima beans
Orange Juice (unless it is freshly squeezed)

Raw tomatoes; I'd rather they be cooked but I won't go picking them out of salads

Candy that's not chocolate (although if it's licorice I will definitely avoid it)

Sour cream and onion chips

Beer

Pesto

Street meat, aka sausage on a bun

Pineapple

hot dogs. if i am hungry enough and it is the only option, ill eat them. but other than that i tend to stay away from them.

milk. i eat in in cereal and i love most dairy products, but drinking milk disgusts me.

Steak ( but I love burgers. Weird...)
Yellow squash
Cake. Any cake. Yuck.
Wonder Bread
Raw tomatoes
Any sushi with softshell crab or octupus
Whiskey or bourbon

Hmmm...I'm like that with:

zucchini
cantaloupe and honeydew
skirt steak
onions (although that's more in the hate category)
green pepper
