How do you eat your sweet corn?

I've always ate it horizontaly in rows and so did every one I thought. The first time my girlfriend saw me eat it that way she told me I was doing it wrong. Your supposed to eat it going around the ear. Obviously it taste the same no matter how you eat it. What do you think?

I learned to eat corn from the cartoons, you eat it in rows and work your way around, at the end of each row a typrwriter bell sounds and you hit the carriage return and continue. ;-)

like huneybumper said, without the typewriter sounds ;)

if you eat it around the ear, when you put it down into the corndish (or whatever you use to hold your corn), any butter drippings latch onto the gnawed up part, which is wasteful!!

I just kind of bite randomly wherever my mouth feels like biting. It usually works out pretty well.

Chew on That

I definitely go around the ear in segments. I start at each end, and finish with the juciest parts in the middle!

I cut it off the cob.

I'm a horizontal eater, and have never seen or heard of people eating it vertically. Weird, you learn something new everyday I guess.

chew chew chew down the rows, never stopping for air until you get all the way to the end...butter dripping off your chin...bits of corn stuck in your teeth and on the corners of your mouth...twist the cob a rotation, begin again....chew chew chew down the row.

hint: boil your sweet corn with a dash of sugar in the water. yum.

Another yummy variation on grilled corn: Grill in husk, then instead of butter, spread a little mayo, sprinkle with Anchote chili powder, some grated parm cheese, and a squirt of lime. Sounds crazy, but it's delicious!!!

I am really weird when snacking on corn: I like to twist the kernels off one by one. I don't know where I picked up this habit, no one I know does this.

If I'm eating corn on the cob with a meal, I will go around the cob.

horizontal rows with typewriter noises in my head (ha ha), but also (and mostly) I cut it off the cob and use it in other things. Mostly the "other things" include "eating the entire pile before it gets to the fridge" because I love corn.

Eat your corn before you eat anything else, eat a horizontal row, then start just above or below where you stopped - takes too much time to go back to the end where you started. This is NOT a typewriter people! R_L_R_L until every kernel is gone and you've sucked all the buttery juices. Take occasional breaks to roll it around in any melted butter remaining on your serving dish (I have corn dishes) if you need air and more buttery goodness. If you ever get your fill, then move on to other dishes, but eating only corn is perfectly acceptable. After all, you can get most of the other stuff anytime!

I'm a vertical girl for the most part, only horizontal on occasion. And I wouldn't dream of putting anything on a perfect cob of sweet corn. If it needs butter or salt its not worth eating! :D

I can't believe this post. It seems kind of inane. I mean, it's corn! It's delicious! You eat it. There are rules for this??? That's news to me.

That being said, Penzey's 4/S is very good on corn, but this is not relevant to the question of the method of eating corn; it's just a nice alternative to regular table salt.

@PAwriter ~ Not Rules. Just Style. ;-)

I like it to cool just a little so the butter clings better. Then a little salt and freshly ground black pepper. Eat left to right, rotate up, left to right. Repeat. Typewriter noises optional. When the corn is pretty much gone, roll the cob in the butter, salt and pepper that dripped off and suck the cob.

A little sugar in the cooking water is a great tip. It keeps the corn crisp.

Anyway, I eat my corn with reckless abandon!

Ok, if we're talking style, then, my husband (and his uncle and his dad) all eat it in the most ridiculously haphazard fashion possible. I think it's genetic, along with their tendency toward serial sneezing.....

Always horizontally, from left to right...to me, the vertical way seems messier and less efficient:-)

Not to sound like an idiot, but how does one actually eat COTC vertically?

The cob itself isn't vertical, that would pretty funny to see actually. I eat it up and down around the cob and then move on instead of going across the cob.

Typewriter style, like in cartoons!

FYI: The average ear of corn has 800 kernels, always arranged in 16 rows. There is one piece of silk for each kernel.

I made the typewriter noise while eating corn with my 4 year old niece. Just to show you how much times have changed...she has no idea what a typewriter is. When I tried to explain it to her she said, "Oh! like my computer! Can it do noggin.com?" Anywho, she still thought the "ding!" was a hoot.

I've had corn just like the above mentioned. It looked crazy when the Mexican vendor was making it up on a stick, however my father said he'd had it before and it was great. He was right, it was absolutely fabulous!

RE: wookie: "....she has no idea what a typewriter is."

You would have to have a very wide mouth, or the corn very short ears, to remove the kernals like a laser printer!

I prefer mines cut off the cob.
