Back when I watched FN, Bobby did a chicken and waffles Throwdown with Melba in Harlem. I believe her place is called Melba's.

Wow - I think Sylvia's is just a tourist joint for those who don't know anything about soul food!!! Food - not that great & the service is lousey. There used to be a place called Emily's that was pretty good - not sure if it is still open or not. So why do you think there is a change? What changes are happening in Harlem??

Assuming it's still open, the Spoonbread Cafe at 547 Lenox Ave is pretty good.

If you are willing to travel to Brooklyn then check out Ruthie's. Two locations: one on 560 Myrtle near Pratt Institute and one that was on Dekalb near Brooklyn Academy of Music but may have moved (Google says its still there but I thought it moved to Fulton Ave). Awesome and authentic soul food that is well worth the drive or subway ride. Small locations so not much seating. To reinforce the comment above... going to Sylvia's for soul food is like going to Times Square to experience NYC culture.

the ruthie's on dekalb is across from fort greene park and the hospital, just past ashland place. however it was closed this past sunday, I really hope it is still open. their sides are amazing (greens, black-eyed peas, mashed and macncheez) as well as some very nice mains. get there!

Ruthie's sounds like a place worth checking out. Back up in Harlem, Amy Ruth's might be your best all-around option, provided you avoid the after-church Sunday lines; Miss Mamie's Spoonbread (close kin to Miss Maude's, on Lenox) has great fried chicken but very leisurely service. I need to pay another call on the casual Margie's Red Rose Diner, but I haven't felt the pressing need to visit Sylvia's for many years.

Amy Ruth's at 113 W 116 St. I had some chunky grits and a silky egg white omelet.

There's this great place on 125th called Mobay.....went there last Sunday, great food, live music and wonderful drinks!! The service was great too!! Another is Manna's.....they're all over the place and while I haven't been there, I've heard great things. For a "Harlem Experience" Slyvia's could work....but it is a bit of a touristy spot!!
Happy eating!!!
