Grocery bagging
Ok, so I started this thread about a month ago regarding my woes with grocery baggers. Finally, today, at the new Mexican supermarket (and it is a really super one) my groceries got bagged properly by a lovely woman named Guadalupe. She put all the cold stuff together, all the veggies together (didn't have anything easily squashed) all the canned stuff together, the cleaners together, and double-bagged the 10-lb bag of sugar. And she was fast. And what's more, the store had enough checkers so there was no line at the registers. I am so happy. When was the last time you got service like this?

The Market Basket chain in Massachusetts and New Hampshire has baggers to beat all baggers. Actually, all of their staff are wonderful - friendly cashiers that make eye contact, shelf-stockers who are happy to look in the back and see if they're truly out of dill, managers who know what's in the aisles and offer to order something customers can't find. I'm told they're still using a management structure from the 1960s, and by gum it works.

Well, minus the fast part, I get that service most of the time at my local Meijer. The Meijer chain employs folks with physical and mental challenges, and I have never had ONE problem with my bagging from one of these kind folks, and I usually get nice conversation along with well-bagged groceries.
Now if the bratty 16 year old high school student happens to be at the checkout, I tend to grab and bag myself or use the self-checkout as I get REALLY tired of raw meat with toilet cleaner, smashed bread and broken eggs, not to mention her (or his) constant whining about when break time or quitting time is, or how crappy the job is...complete with about 2 dozen eye rolls.

Self-checkout. I am getting so good at it, I have re-affirmed my desire to be the Olympic bagger of the century when I take up my position at retirement. I will win the gold!

I'm lucky to have a great local grocer that costs more than most but knows how to bag'em!

The only time I don't bag my own groceries is when I'm pregnant - and that ship sailed about 20 years ago. I know where things go in my house and it's easier for me to un-bag at home if I do the bagging at the supermarket. I also don't think it's efficient use of time for me to stand around doing nothing while there are items to be bagged.

self checkout - ditto. the girl/moron at New Frontiers (the local answer to whole foods around here) put EVERYTHING I bought into one reusable bag. It was so heavy I couldn't lift it off the counter, and I'm pretty strong for a girl. I had to stop right outside the door and rebag it into two bags so I could carry it to the car. at least she put the heavy things at the bottom so nothing got squashed.

Was this a Northgate Supermarket? We have those here in Southern California and my groceries always get bagged amazingly when I go there.

My experience actually occurred at a Vallarta supermarket (I live in the San Diego area). The entire shopping experience is great. You can get ice cream (Dreyer's) or an agua fresca to enjoy while you shop. The meat is cut in house, the seafood selection is varied and fresh, the produce is reasonably priced and in excellent condition, the taqueria and bakery are nice, and the store is spotless. I generally do use the self-check-out at other stores, but this one is a great exception.

It's been a while. I usually group like-items on the conveyer belt and 9 times out of 10, when I get home, I still have to sift through bags of canned goods with frozen items!!! It drives me crazy!!!!!!!

@beth1 - Where is this Vallarta supermarket you are speaking of? I live in La Mesa, so I'm curious if it is accessible to me, I'm always looking for a better supermarket with GOOD produce! Thanks.
